Re: Power-off stupidity remains in Gnome 3

Hey,
I've said it once and will probably say it again...
>> yum install gnome-shell-extension-alternative-status-menu
> Just curious, before I try this...
Don't try this! :D There's no need to yum install anything. All you need
is http://extensions.gnome.org - it does it all for you. And for the
record, it only changes the "suspend" into "Suspend, Hibernate, Power Off"
individual options.

kernel-3.3.8-1.fc16.i686n fails to mount root by it's uuid
by JD
After yum update, kernel-3.3.8-1.fc16.i686 was brought in.
When I rebooted this morning into the new kernel, kernel
panic'ed because it was unable to mount root by it's uuid.
I had opened a bug at bugzilla.redhat.com against
kernel-3.3.5-2.fc16.i686, which panic'ed in the same way,
but that bug has been deleted (or so it seems, because searching
for it yields no hits. I had also filed the bug
with bugzilla.kernel.org (big mistake!!!) and it also has
been deleted. That bug id was 822792.
Before these bugs were deleted, there were replies that
problem was in dracut.
But no solution was provided.

Video Resolution problems in F17
by Mickey
F17-KDE , Fresh Install
Using Nvidia card with Nouveau driver.
The highest resolution I can get is 1024x768 that doesn't help for full
Horzontal deflection on my Monitor.
I need at least a 1280x768.
I had this problem in F15 also, except for one kernal I had installed, I
could get the 1280x768 using KRandRTray for settings

Re: Power-off stupidity remains in Gnome 3 (Was: Power-off stupidity remains in Fedora 17)
by Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan
Again, this being the Fedora userlist, it isn't the place to agitate
to get Gnome fixed. The relevant choice for Fedora as such,
concerning the user shell, is amongst these:
* to keep Gnome shell as the default user shell;
* to keep Gnome shell as an option but no longer make it the default;
* to cease to provide Gnome shell with the distribution.
If there is no effective place for users to try to get Gnome shell
fixed, that may say something about which choice should be made for
Fedora. But people who have already settled on the first of these
options, yet are dissatisfied with that shell, shouldn't be using this
list to try to get that shell modified.

Degraded Network Performance Under Fedora 17
by Dave Cross
I have a Dell XPS laptop which worked fine under Fedora 16. I recently
upgraded to Fedora 17 and the wireless network performance has
degraded significantly. It seems to work well when first started up,
but once I've transferred a reasonable amount of data, the throughput
drops to a trickle until it finally dies out completely. I can usually
start another good patch by turning the wireless off and on again.
I know little about networking drivers under Linux so I'm not sure
what information will be helpful to track down the issue. But I'm
happy to run whatever commands you think will be useful and report the
results.
As a start, here's my Smolt profile.

nouveau driver not working for ancient Dell D800
by Ranbir
Hi Everyone,
I have an ancient D800 with a mobililty geared Geforce 4 video card.
The laptop is mostly useless, but since it's still working and browsing
the net on it is OK, I wanted to install F17 on it.
In went F17, out went the video. :( The nouveau driver gave me a screen
full of artifacts and a block for a cursor. Large sections of the
screen were unreadable.
I tried to use the proprietary legacy drivers from Nvidia, but the
installer bombs out. It used to work on F15 until a kernel update broke
it. Something changed and that change made it all the way to F17's
kernels.
Does anyone know why the nouveau driver isn't working for me? Are there
any workarounds?
I'd also appreciate hearing about any workaround's for the proprietary
installer error, if any.
Regards,
Ranbir

safe graphics mode installation help
by Dokuro
ok, here's my crazy story, I had some graphic issues with my TV and my
Fedora 17 box that had the alpha and was up to date, so I decided to
re-install, however my daughter was playing with another of my
wireless keyboards and on the boot screen she made the menu into safe
graphics mode. I saw that the live fedora was looking normal so I
installed it from there, but the screen does not fill the TV, just a
1024 resolution, and for some reason my /mnt/drive, that I use as a
personal folder seems to make nautilus kinda slow.
Does anybody knows if the safe graphics mode install might have
something to do with this...?
thank you, and keep up the great work, and Gnome 3 :)
