nouveau driver not working for ancient Dell D800
by Ranbir
Hi Everyone,
I have an ancient D800 with a mobililty geared Geforce 4 video card.
The laptop is mostly useless, but since it's still working and browsing
the net on it is OK, I wanted to install F17 on it.
In went F17, out went the video. :( The nouveau driver gave me a screen
full of artifacts and a block for a cursor. Large sections of the
screen were unreadable.
I tried to use the proprietary legacy drivers from Nvidia, but the
installer bombs out. It used to work on F15 until a kernel update broke
it. Something changed and that change made it all the way to F17's
kernels.
Does anyone know why the nouveau driver isn't working for me? Are there
any workarounds?
I'd also appreciate hearing about any workaround's for the proprietary
installer error, if any.
Regards,
Ranbir

safe graphics mode installation help
by Dokuro
ok, here's my crazy story, I had some graphic issues with my TV and my
Fedora 17 box that had the alpha and was up to date, so I decided to
re-install, however my daughter was playing with another of my
wireless keyboards and on the boot screen she made the menu into safe
graphics mode. I saw that the live fedora was looking normal so I
installed it from there, but the screen does not fill the TV, just a
1024 resolution, and for some reason my /mnt/drive, that I use as a
personal folder seems to make nautilus kinda slow.
Does anybody knows if the safe graphics mode install might have
something to do with this...?
thank you, and keep up the great work, and Gnome 3 :)

DNS resolver configuration
by Mateusz Marzantowicz
I have noticed a strange (for me) behavior of dns resolver in Fedora 17.
If the domain name being resolved simply doesn't exists I'm provided
with my IP address instead of an error. It behaves like when the search
option is present in /etc/resolv.conf but it isn't. I suspect that it
was added by some other script but I can't find where and how to disable
it. I suspected my dns forwarder for a while but on Debian box in the
same network everything works as expected - I get an error when domain
name does not exist.
I have Network Manager disabled and have static IP configuration done by
network service. Is there any way to change this dns resolution settings?

Power-off stupidity remains in Fedora 17
by Aaron Konstam
I know that complaining with each successive version of Fedora gets
annoying. But would someone tell me why the developers insist on retains
the stupidity of having to hold down the alt key to get to the power off
option.
It is certainly a stupid feature and it continues on with its stupidity.
Ok, now I can relax until the same feature appears in F18.

cpu scaling
by Matej Kosik
Hello,
On Fedora 16, CPU scaling works fine for me.
On Debian, I was able to determine minimal/maximal frequencies of CPU-s
by looking to files like this:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_{min,max}_freq
Is there a way how can I do the same on Fedora?
Is there a way how can I determine that CPU scaling is turned on,
on a given machine?

Authorization failed: Failed to obtain authentication
by Rich Emberson
About a week ago I updated my version of fedora16 on both my
laptop and server. After that update, every 5 minutes I would
get a Notification popup stating:
Authorization failed
with reason:
Failed to obtain authentication
At the time I did not do anything figuring that it might be
some bug in fedora16 and since I was about to upgrade to
fedora17 I'd wait till I did that.
Well, over the weekend I upgraded to fedora17 and I still
get the same notification popups. They are correlated with
the /var/log/messages file recording:
Jun 5 15:43:56 olympia dbus-daemon[730]: dbus[730]: [system] Activating
service name='org.freedesktop.PackageKit' (using servicehelper)
Jun 5 15:43:56 olympia dbus[730]: [system] Activating service
name='org.freedesktop.PackageKit' (using servicehelper)
Jun 5 15:43:56 olympia dbus-daemon[730]: dbus[730]: [system] Successfully
activated service 'org.freedesktop.PackageKit'
Jun 5 15:43:56 olympia dbus[730]: [system] Successfully activated service
'org.freedesktop.PackageKit'
So, how can I get rid of whatever is causing the popup?
Thanks
Richard
