Hp P1005
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
I am trying to install a new HP LaserJet P1005 on my FC7 machine,
but it just do not work and I am lost !!!
It looks like that I need hplip.
So originally, I hade the version for fc7 (1.7.4a-6).
Then I installed the 2.8.7 version from the tar file.
I was able to do hp-toolbox, hp-setup, etc... but it always fails in
detectting properly the printer even it is was here more or less.
So I though that it may be a conflict between the 1.7.4 version and the
new 2.8.7 (which is coming with the new distribution).
So I deinstalled the 1.7.4, expecting that I would have the same
functionalities from the 2.8.7. So I even reinstall the 2.8.7 after all.
But I list all the fonctionnality, like the hp-toolbox, etc....
I looks like that 2.8.7 and 1.7.4 do not install the same think at all !!!
There is not much documentation about this.
Anyway, if some botdy has some experience with a printer HP P1005 and
FC7, maybe he could tell me.
Regards

Slightly [OT] Network Monitoring/Alerting tools
by Mark Haney
I know this has been bandied about by every n00b about once every couple
of months, but hear me out.
I'm no n00b and I'm in the awkward position to try to find a potential
replacement for our Proprietary monitoring solution (SMARTS if anyone is
familiar with it.) We run SMARTS along with Nagios and several home
grown scripts, but my boss has this itch to find something that might
potentially replace SMARTS, but give him a nice GUI to work with.
I've used Nagios and I like it. Also BB4. But what else is out there
that is new or relatively new, that does network monitoring and alerting?
We need something like Nagios, SNMP, port monitoring, interface
monitoring on our core routers, etc. WE also need something really
granular for alerting via text or email so we don't get deluged with
messages at night for things that aren't critical.
Has anyone used (or is using) something not that many not be well known
but works well that they can recommend for me to take a look at?
I've googled until I'm sick of it, and nothing I've picked out really
strikes me as adequate for our needs. So now I'm turning to the Fedora
community for ideas.

Fedora 9 install method, when Graphics Card / LCD not detected
by Jay Mistry
Is there a method to install FC 9 when the Graphics Card (nVidia 8400 GS)
&/or LCD Monitor (17" LG 177WSB, with native res of 1440 X 900) is not
supported?
After installing from the i386 DVD, I get a blank screen & don't know how to
proceed (am *new to Linux & FC9*).
Mainboard is the Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 (with nVidia 610i chipset), if this
helps.
Thanks,

Yahoo! VMware Server Finally Installed!
by Gene Poole
All,
I finally got my VMware Server 1.0.6 installed on Fedora 8!
Here's what I did:
I followed the instructions I found on
http://fedorasolved.org/server-solutions/vmserver-install - exactly
including the one-liner for Fedora 9. I rebooted the machine and then
removed the kernel-devel that didn't match the uname -r listed in step 8.
When it failed at step 32 (as it had in the past), I then performed the
process listed in 'Doing the work' steps 1 and 1 (not a mistake, there is
no step 2) and applied the patch for the vmnet-only.
I then executed the vmware-config.pl found in /usr/bin
All seems to be working except in KDE3, the VMware Server Console wasn't
added to the menus
Thanks for everyone's help!

sed script problem
by Guillaume
hi,
I hope that someone could answer my question :D
I experience a problem with sed. If i run this sed in 'interactive'
command line with this command line :
sed -i -e '/%B5content%5D/d' file.tx
Note that I use special char in the deleted part I search for.
if I run the same in a script, the command does not delete any
correspondant existing string.
do you know why ?
Thanks,
