Java applets not starting F-9 , firefox-3
by Per Anton Rønning
I think I have tried everything to fire up some browser applets in some
web-pages that I am visting frequently.
Everything was OK under FC 5 - Firefox -2, but now it just does not start.
I expect a login screen as the first response to starting up, but it
does never appear.
- I have installed the libjavaplugin_oji.so softlink in /home/<my
user>/.mozilla/plugins
- I have tried both jre 6 and jre 5 (i have installed the .bin self
extracting file according to some advide I found)
- I have Gooogled extensively to get hints, some were fond, but they did
not work.
- I have checked /usr/java/jre1.5.0_16/bin/ControPanel, as well as the
/usr/java/ jre1.6.0_07/-ditto- and I cannot find anything wrong.
- Right now the ..-oji.so points to jre1.5....
- Perhaps Firefox-9 searces in some other location to find this link? I
have found no hint about that. In FC 5 this works like a charm.
- One text I found hinted that this area is full of potential trouble,
and one issue is which version of C has been used to compile both Java
and Firefox.
Does anyone have some experience in this area?
Best Regards

NetworkManager/WPA-problems (?)
by Lars E. Pettersson
My log is filling up with:
Aug 23 12:20:36 localhost NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 6 -> 7
Aug 23 12:20:38 localhost NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 7 -> 6
Aug 23 12:20:38 localhost NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 6 -> 7
Aug 23 12:20:40 localhost NetworkManager: <info> (wlan0): supplicant
connection state change: 7 -> 6
...and on it goes...
I.e. each second second the connection (WPA) goes from state 7 to 6 and
then back again. I have used Google etc. to find out what is going on
but have not found any usable information.
Is there anyone out there that might be able to shed some light on this
issue? I.e. what is going on, and how I can fix it?
Regards,
Lars

Intel Wireless 3945ABG Problem with Kernel 2.6.25.14-69.fc8
by das
Hello Friends
After updating the kernel last night my Network controller: Intel
Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02) has
ceased working. I can send this mail with a reboot by
2.6.25.11-60.fc8, after a whole frustrating day. Though all this time
'iwconfig' or 'iwlist scan' are giving expected results all through.
But, finally, 'ifup wlan0' or 'service network restart' are not
working, the output being something like this after a very long time:
<<
[root@dia ~]# service network restart
Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up interface wlan0: Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
Determining IP information for wlan0...PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1)

(My wireless device is wlan0, and it is connected to a Siemens SL2_141
router with dhcp.)
Any help or information from anyone?

Re: FC9 NetworkManager & WPA
by Leon Vergottini
Hi
Picture this scenario: You plug in your new wireless router, it has no
security settings. You configure it using the HTTP webserver, and your
passwords (any you set into it) are part of the HTML source code,
viewable by anyone else at the same time. Your browser may display them
as ***** in the webform, but it's only the browser display that's
obscuring them.
I feel your pain there. That is the only thing that I do not like about
the router. I have over come this problem by adding MAC address
filtering under Advanced Tab.
With it on you cannot access the router at all unless your PC/laptop's
MAC address appears in the 'allow list.' Since I have enabled that no
one has hacked into the router.
Then also, I usually do the configuration via cable and not wireless.
It is much more secure that way - but you knew it already. I do not
even do it for sake of convenience.
I will walk to the router, plug in the cable and do the necessary configs.
If you are still having issues, then maybe you should try a firmware
update on the router, I haven't done it myself so I cannot say anything
about it.
A TIP. Please do not buy a D-Link ADSL router and try to get it talking
with the wireless router. It is an absolute nightmare. It took me a
whole day to get it going properly.
The shocking thing is that according to the manual it is not possible.

In addition to Russell's suggestion of using Ctrl-C to stop the
operation, you may want to consider using the -i and -v options with mv
(and cp and rm) so that you can see exactly which paths the commands are
operating on and so that you will be prompted for confirmation before
any destructive operations are performed.
If you want to consistently use those options but not type them every
time, you can add them to an alias:
alias mv="mv -iv"
This will take effect for the duration of the current shell. To make the
alias persistent, place the line above in ~/.bashrc

A solution - Huawei E220 USB Modem
by Leon Vergottini
Hi
Thanks for all the help. Both my problems have been solved
1. Getting Yum through a proxy server
2. Codecs - thanks Tim for that detailed reply
Today I would like to provide a solution to a problem. See it is easy
to ask questions and tap information. Hopefully I can make someone's
day for a change.
I have been struggling to get my USB E220 modem going for a while now -
3 Months to be exact. Last night I stumbled upon a solution. Quick
background
I am running Fedora Core 9 with KDE 4.0 with kernel 2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686.
This should fix the issue of the modem continuously restarting.
You will have to edit this file
"/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-broken-usb-sticks.fdi" and
add to it the following:
<match key="@storage.originating_device:usb.vendor_id" int="0x12d1">
<match key="@storage.originating_device:usb.product_id" int="0x1003">
<merge key="info.ignore" type="bool">true</merge>
</match>
</match>
Then I used the Network Manager applet to to configure the APN settings
under the Mobile Broadband tab.
I know about the Betavine project and those guys do and excellent job.
I just do not use the beta software because the last time I did it I had
more problems than solutions. I do check
there website twice a week to see if the final release of version 2 of
the software is not yet released. Maybe not the best way, but at least
and alternative. This should also work for Gnome but I cannot guarantee it.
I do know that I get HSDPA speed although KDE only shows it as a GPRS or
GSM connection.

Codecs
by Leon Vergottini
Hi
The other day I had a problem getting yum through a proxy - that one I
have solved and thanks for the help that I have received from you guys -
I was pointed in the right direction. I am looking for codecs so that I
can play my AVI, and other audio formats. I have followed the steps
listed at
http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-fedora9-gnome-p5, however
without any success. When I try to play avi files, it still points me
to a site where I can purchase the codecs. In Ubuntu, which I used
before moving to Fedora, I only needed to download the Ubuntu-restricted
package and it worked. I have searched on Google, but also with no luck
unless I have searched in a stupid way.
Please, just point me again in the right direction, like a website - I
like playing around and figure the things out myself.

OK! So, I can upgrade my BIOS in DOS emulation?
