Anaconda (or libata?) device detection order
by Christopher Mocock
Hi,
I've been creating a custom spin with revisor and it's going very well,
except for one fairly major problem...
It seems that when booting an installed system, /dev/sda corresponds to
a PATA device, but during installation (via anaconda), /dev/sda
corresponds to a SATA device.
To clarify... when anaconda runs I would like it to install to the
primary master PATA drive if present. Strangely (or strange to me
anyway), it seems that SATA devices get detected first. I thought that
PATA devices would be detected first, so that in my kickstart file I
could specify my desired partitioning to be on disk /dev/sda.
When there are only PATA devices installed this works fine, it goes on
the primary master. However if SATA devices are present as well as PATA,
it installs to the first SATA device.
If I set grub.conf of the installed system to boot from /dev/sda, it
tries to boot from the PATA disk rather than the SATA disk to which it
installed. I can get around this by pointing grub.conf to the UUID of
the disk to which it installed. However, I'm surprised that /dev/sda
seems to be a SATA disk during installation, and a PATA disk during boot.
Any thoughts as to why this might be? What decides the device detection
order? Is it libata or something else?
Thanks,

OT question about Macbook (OS X) file systems
by Dean S. Messing
I just purchaced a Macbook for my daughter as she's off to college
(required by the dept. she's in). I'm wondering if OS X understands
the ext3 filesysystem. In particular, will it properly handle
symlinks generated under linux? I wd. like to give her a USB disk containing
an ext3 filesystem (that has lots of symlinks) with her 25 Gig organised classical
music library on it (done on an F8 system).
Thanks for your help.

xmodmap map key to right mouse click.
by korgull
hi,
I'm trying to get a key mapped as right mouse button. I'm using a macbook
which obviously lacks this button. I'd like to use the right apple key as
right mouse button and I've read dozens of pages stating that I can use
xmodmap in a way like this :
xmodmap -e "keycode 116 = Pointer_Button3"
After using xev, this key shows "Pointer_Button3" but it doesn't trigger a
right mouse button event.
Anyone having an idea how to make it work ?
Regards,
Marcel

F9 thermal issue
by fnol
Hi!
I installed F9 on a Acer Aspire 5720 and the PC goes hot after approx. 30min and turns of without any warnings or log items.
The issue is that the fan never starts.
This was working fine with F8.
Any ideas how to configure F9?

Turns out another part of the UPS' LED output is an estimation of how long
it can support the current system at current load. For my system this time
varies from 60 to 70 minutues.

initial ramdisk with NFS support
by Luca
Hi all,
I'm using Fedora 8 x86_64.
I'm trying to build an initial ramdisk which is capable of mounting a
directory through NFS. I was able to do that with the 32 bit version. In
that case my initial ramdisk had portmap (and the needed library). After
starting portmap I was able to mount a directory from a NFS server. Now if I
try to use rpcbind I get a lot of errors like
rpcbind: Cannot get local address fro udp: servname not supported for
ai_socktype
rpcbind: Cannot get local address fro tcp: servname not supported for
ai_socktype
rpcbind: cannot get uid of 'rp': No such file or directory
Is it possible with fedora 8 (the 64 bits version) to have an initial
ramdisk which mounts a directory through NFS?
Thanks!

sudo GUI frontend
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
Can anyone please point me to a good sudo GUI front-end? (Password
dialog box).
While I'm using KDE 4.1, I don't mind using a gtk box.
I tried using kdesu with or w/o the kdesurc - but it doesn't seem to
work.

Yes... but it should say 2.6.25.nnnn
You are using a non-stabile kernel.

Kernel Version
by Robert C Smith
I have been using Windows for over 15 years but I'm new to Linux. I
recently installed Fedora 9 from a Live CD and allowed it to update
itself over the net. I am trying to find out my kernel version. On the
GNOME desktop from the top menu bar I select System --> About This
Computer. That window has a line that says "Kernel Linux
2.6.27-0.244.rc2.git1.fc10.i686". Is this the kernel version?
