ssh and port 22 problem, cont.
by Gerhard Magnus
Greetings!
I've made some progress on troubleshooting this "ssh & port 22 problem".
Here was my original post:
When I try to connect from a remote machine to my one at home
using ssh I get the error message "ssh: connect to host 64.146.133.1 port
22: Connection refused" -- but using ssh in the outgoing direction (i.e.
from home to the remote location) works fine.
Here's what's happened since:
I have two machines (PuteA and PuteB) sharing an ActionTec DSL modem. The IP
I was using was that of my "Gateway" ISP (64.146.133.1) -- an error. But
when I used the correct, static IP address of the ActionTec
(64.146.133.52) I got this message:
ssh: connect to host 64.146.133.52 port22: Connection refused
I thought I had port forwarding (for port 22) set correctly on the modem. For
troubleshooting, my ISP advised me to run "tcpdump -n host 192.168.0.2" on
PuteA, where 192.168.0.2 is the "internal" IP of PuteA. Then I logged on
to the remote location from PuteB and tried to ssh from there to PuteA
using the static IP address. The ssh from the remote location timed out
with the same "port 22: connection refused" message. The tcpdump on Pute
A gave this message:
> tcpdump: listening on eth0
> 17:27:33.662753 arp who-has 192.168.0.2 tell 192.168.0.1
where 182.168.0.1 is the "internal" IP of the modem. (Sorry if I have
this terminology wrong.)
My ISP says the problem is the firewall on PuteA and that he doesn't do linux
firewalls.
Here are my replies to the people who responded to my first post:
(1) "Do you have the firewall configured to deny incoming packets to port
22?"
How do I check this?
(2) "You need to check that sshd is running on your system."
Yes. I comes up with each boot. Also "service sshd status" gives
"sshd (pid 787) is running".
(3) "sshd uses /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny. Check that they are
configured to allow your remote machine in."
Both files have only commented lines.
(4) "Also, if your /etc/ssh/sshd_config file has VerifyReverseMapping
turned on, you will get kicked out if your remote address does not work
with a reverse dns lookup."
There's a "VerifyReverseMapping no" line in the file but it's been commented
out.
(5) "Just to be sure: when you are at home machine, try 'ssh localhost'.
If this works, you probably need to check your firewall."
It seems to work -- I ssh to the machine itself.
(6) "This is common on every system I have ever loaded with FC2. Your
iptables are blocking the connection. You can do one of the following:
iptables -A INPUT -m tcp -p tcp --dport 22 - j ACCEPT"
I tried this. The ssh to PuteA from the remote location still times out.
(7) "Oh yes I also took out the REDHAT firewall entrie as I dont have a
clue as to how to work with it."
I've fiddled endlessly with this "system tool" at each of the three levels
of security as well as using the "customize" option to set eth0 as a
trusted device and to allow incoming ssh. It doesn't show the settings
that actually exist.
(8) "If your fedora box is connected directly to a DSL modem, you should
be able to find your IP address by running ifconfig from the command
line and looking for 'inet addr:' (probably under 'eth0')."
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:05:81:60:8E
inet addr:192.168.0.4 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2184 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:2005 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:1122075 (1.0 Mb) TX bytes:190214 (185.7 Kb)
Interrupt:5 Base address:0x3000
Could this be the problem -- the "inet addr" of 192.168.0.4? As far as I
can tell, the modem is 192.168.0.1, PuteA is 192.168.0.2, and PuteB is
192.168.0.3. I haven't set anything as 192.168.0.4.
(9) "nmap 64.146.133.52"
(The 1598 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
Port State Service
23/tcp open telnet
53/tcp open domain
80/tcp open http
Shouldn't ssh be here? And what's telnet doing open? The books have me
scared to death of this... hackers, crackers, script kiddies, etc.
Thanks for the help!

/etc/resolv.conf changes
by vincenzo romero
Hello all,
I'm getting frustrated attempting to understand; I googled and asked
folks and am unable to get a straight answer.
1. How is the /etc/resolv.conf file maintained ? I do not seem to
get a consistent result when I save resolv.conf configuration from GUI
or by hand using vim /etc/resolv.conf.
a. Sometimes I the entries toggles between the two entries:
# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!
; Use a local caching nameserver controlled by NetworkManager
nameserver 127.0.0.1
b. then when I restart the network services some the /etc/resolv.conf
file appears like this:
# generated by NetworkManager, do not edit!
; Use a local caching nameserver controlled by NetworkManager
search lab.mycompany.com
nameserver 192.168.17.2
This host is:
- a DNS server that is authoritative for its domain within the
192.168.16/20 network
- I believe that even as DNS server, this host should have its
resolv.conf file configured to define itself as a DNS server, right?
I apologize for the naive questions, but I am a newbie and am unable
to gather a straightforward answer.
thanks in advance.

moving from Verizon DSL to Verizon FIOS
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Have a box running FC2 which I use as a home server. I setup using an FAQ
found on the tldp.org, using two NICs hooked to a Verizon-provided DSL
modem.
Verizon is wiring the neighborhood and premises (building complex in NYC)
for FIOS with a vengeance. As yet, no TV service is offered, though there
are parts of NJ and Long Island which have this service already.
Once TV service is available (and competitive with cable) I'd like to flip
from copper to fiberoptic and keeping a Fedora box to the duty of a
router.
Any suggestions, links in this regard?
Thanks.

EDAC error
by Brent Snow, Mr.
Hi All,
I am having a problem with a new Dell PowerEdge 1900 Server
running Fedora 8.
The System setup is as follows:
2 - Xeon E5310 (Quad-Core 1.6 GHz) processors
16 GB of RAM, I SATA 80 GB HDD.
------------------------------------------------------
The Error is as follows: EDAC i5000 MC0: nonfatal errors
found 0=800.
The system runs very very slow (I have a p3 that is faster
then this system is).
I have installed Windows 2003 Server X_64 and it runs very
very quick.
There are no errors under Windows, and there are no errors
reported by Dell's diagnostic tools.
I have run Memtest86+ (for 96 hours) and there are no errors
detected there as well.
As soon as I install Fedora 8, the errors show back up and
the system just bogs down.
I have tried aliasing the EDAC files thinking that this may
be the problem, but all that did was stop the log messages.
I have noticed that it seems that each of the processors
peaks at 100% for 30 seconds or so and then it will move to another CPU,
for 30 seconds, etc.
I am at a loss on this one, and Google has not been able to
provide any answers, so I was hoping that someone else has experienced
this.
Thanks Brent

RE: What's all the hype over Ubuntu?
by Michael.Coll-Barth@VerizonWireless.com
________________________________
From: Arch Willingham
With that said, I have never seen any other version of Linux
running except Fedora. What's all the hype around Ubuntu? I realize I
could download an install a copy but I never really saw any reason to
since FCx seems to work great.
________________________________
Arch,
For me, it was a simple matter of it looking cleaner and being real easy
to install. I use Linux at home and have 5 machines with Ubuntu and one
with multiple OSes. The family is all on Ubuntu, migrated from Windows.
I started with FC5 or 6, but found that Ubuntu 6.4, was a little
slicker, all the way around. Even FC7 was not quite there. Don't get
me wrong, FC7 works fine and it is on the multi-boot. I will be
upgrading to FC8 and Ubuntu 8.4 shortly and will migrate one or the
other out to the other machines. I plan to give a CD to each person and
let them have at it.

Installing Fedora 8 on Intel Core Duo
by Giulio Troccoli
I have just bought a new PC which I am going to use as a server. I have
been using Fedora Core 5 on the old one for about 5 years and I was very
happy with it. I am also using Fedora 8 on my laptop and I'm very happy
with it.
The installation goes very well, I've got all the screens and I choose
what to install and what not. Mind you, at this point the server is NOT
yet connected to the router (if that makes a different). After the
installation has finished it ask to reboot, to which of course I say
yes. But the boot hangs, or so it seems.
I've got the text output up to the point when it says "Starting udev".
with one error maybe. The message "dmi_save_oem_string_devices: out of
memory" appears. Then the screen goes black (and actually the monitor's
light goes yellow, like there wasn't any signal). Nothing seems to bring
it back to live.
I've read that maybe I should use Fedora 7 instead of 8. As I said I
have been using Fedora 8 on my laptop for some time with no trouble at
all. But then again, it's a Pentium Centrino not a Dual Core.
Any help?

compiz-fusion and fedora - take 2 :)
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
first to say that I'm aware of current Fedora and compiz situation [1].
I'm not here to repeat discussion about compiz on by default but to
start a discussion first with users and then include developers on how
to make fedora and compiz-fusion work better.
I find compiz package and not also compiz-fusion package installed a
much needed correction by default and that is why I posted this RFE [2]
Are there any of you who have some better idea how can we make fedora
and compiz-fusion work better for users? I find that installing
compiz-fusion is non-intuitive. Why? Because you need to install it with
this command:
yum install compiz-fusion compiz-fusion-extras compiz-fusion-gnome
compiz-fusion-extras-gnome libcompizconfig ccsm compiz-manager
fusion-icon-gtk
how can this made easier?
What do you think should compiz only be installed by default or should
it compiz-fusion and other packages be installed - yum says all needed
packages for compiz-fusion are 1.7M big.
Cheers,
Valent.

Accessing USB Programmer With avrdude
by Robert L Cochran
I'm having trouble trying to access a USB device under Fedora 7. I think
udev might be my problem.
When I try using avrdude with this line:
[rlc@bobcp4 atmega644]$ avrdude -c usbtiny -p m644 -P usb -U
flash:w:blink_pb3.hex
I get this error message:
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
This is what lsusb says:
[root@bobcp4 ~]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 006: ID 0e6a:6001 Megawin Technology Co., Ltd
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 0424:2228 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 0424:2602 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0424:2502 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1781:0c9f
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
And the device is described here:
http://ladyada.net/make/usbtinyisp/
(I bought the kit and built it.)
I added a rule named '98-usbtiny-rules' to /etc/udev/rules.d which
contains this line
*SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="1781", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0c9f",
GROUP="users", MODE="0660"
But avrdude still can't seem to find the programmer. Am I right in
believing that I need a udev rule, and if so, does the above rule look
correct for what I want to do? Or am I missing another issue?
Thanks

Boot issue after changing m/b
by Chu Jeang Tan
After upgrading to a new CPU/mb, I've transferred my two harddrives
over, attached to IDE 1 master and slave (in the same order).
Booting into FC8 shows the following error
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
I've tried editing grub parameters by providing root=/dev/sda2
(also tried hda2 and other combos) and getting the same error.
I'm using FC8's kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24.3-34.fc8 , there should
not be an issue with lack of drivers?
Any tips and directions towards solving this?
The new mother board has 1 EIDE and 4 SATA, of which only the EIDE is
loaded with the two harddisks.
I'm waiting to install a SATA dvd drive before I can boot in the rescue disk.
