yum stopped working (fc4 & fc5)
by Mika Penttilä
Hi!
I found yum stopped working after recently doing a biggish fc4 upgrade,
for instance glibc got updated (no repositories found ; Cannot find a
valid baseurl). I upgraded then to fc5, with same results for yum. I
suspect it might be nameresolver/glibc related issue...Any ideas?

SELinux blocking Gizmo on FC5
by Michael Wiktowy
Hello,
I have submitted the details of my problem to bugzilla at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=187629
as instructed to do in the execmod section of the SELinux FAQ for FC5:
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc5/
The workaround listed there (setting a context of testrel_shlib_t) didn't
work.
I was wondering if any SELinux gurus on the list had some quick workarounds
that didn't enable switching SELinux off or putting it in to audit-only mode
using the enforcing=0 boot parameter? I can run Gizmo sucessfully by doing
so but I was looking for a better way that kept SELinux doing its thing.
Thanks,
/Mike

Resolving problems with wget and yum

Hi
This behaviour is very strange, I wonder if anyone has a clue as to what
is going on. System is FC4 running 2.6.16-1.2069_FC4. HEAD and GET from
perl-LWP work as expected, but wget and yum do not.

Fedora 4 to fedora 5 upgrade; Planetccrma installed; Upgrade Problem?
by Mirco Scara
Hello there.
I would like to upgrade my system from fedora 4 to fedora 5 using the
standard installation dvd.
On my fedora 4 machine I am using the planetccrma repo for my Music
production and I am afraid that an upgrade would break most of the music
packages provided by planetccrma.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
Any suggestion?
Thanks

K3B suddenly can't burn DVD anymore
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
My K3B suddenly can't burn DVD anymore. Whenever I tried to burn DVD, it
complained that it couldn't find media in /dev/hdc (although the DVD+R is
there) and asked me to insert an "empty of appendable Double layer DVD+-R".
Why does it do that ? and why it asked me for a double layer media ? my data
is < 4GB. When this happens, I suddenly get this in my /var/log/message:
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51
{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x40

Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: ATAPI device hdc:
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: Error: Hardware error -- (Sense key=0x04)
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: Tracking servo failure -- (asc=0x09,
ascq=0x01)
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet
command was:
Mar 20 08:18:36 defiant kernel: "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 "
I am not so sure if this is a device failure. Two days ago I could burn DVD
just fine. Just now, I tried to burn CD with the same device and it worked
fine.
Any help ?
Thank you in advance.

Yum doesn't appear to update packages anymore
by Jacques B.
Over the past several days it seems like yum is not doing any updates.
I see postings on the list of updates, and my PC at the office seems
to be grabbing the later versions, but not at home. For example
mlocate-0.14-0.fc5.1 is out. My installed version is
mlocate-0.12-1.2. But when I do a yum update, it says no updates
(same applies to the recent kernel release, it's not picking that up).
I even went so far as to do a yum remove of mlocate and then a yum
install of it and sure enough it still grabbed the -0.12-1.2 version
rather than the latest one. I have not been messing with the .repos
so I can't understand why it has stopped updating. Any suggestions?

FC5 audio device permission problems
by Anand Buddhdev
Hi people,
I upgraded my FC4 system to FC5 last night, using yum. I use KDE. Now I'm having
all sorts of problems with permissions for devices in /dev. I noticed
immediately that I could not play any sounds. It turns out that /dev/dsp was
owned by root, with mode 0600. I did "chown <myusername> /dev/dsp" and I could
play sounds. I had to do the same with /dev/mixer.
This morning, I discovered I could not play CDs because /dev/hdc is owned by
root.disk, with permissions 0660. Now, I can add myself to the "disk" group, but
again, it's a hack. Under FC4, everything worked fine.
I've looked through the release notes, and I can't find anything to say that
there has been a major change with default device permissions. Do I need to make
any change to my system to get all this to work without problems? Or is this a
bug that I should go file?
