A few suggestions for the Istallation Guide -- made by the truly dumb
by Bill Case
Hi;
I am not ordinarily truly dumb; I have installed FC3 and FC4 several
times previously. But when I installed FC5 about a week ago I wasted
about 4 hours because my brain refused to work, I had forgotten some
basics, and frustration took over. Now I've been thinking that if I
could get my self into so much trouble what could happen with someone
truly new to Fedora.
* After down loading very slowly using BitTorrent (my cable
company chokes BitTorrent downloads to about 33 KB/s), I went
directly to Documentation ==> Installation Guide. Suggestion:
As one of the first Items in the Table of Contents of the
Installation Guide replicate the Table of Contents (with links)
from the Download ==> Download and Installation Instructions.
* I had forgotten how to use SHA1SUM. 'man' that night seemed
particularly obtuse. There is a good example in the Download
and Installation Guide but it took me an hour or so before I
found it. Suggestion: Installation Guide should have a clear
link to the Download and Installation Guide or just copy the
relevant paragraph with perhaps a more detailed explanation for
how to use SHA1SUM with FC5 downloads. In both, the use of
SHA1SUM should be a separate ToC item.
* I only burn .iso images to CD once every 6 to 8 months (for each
new Fedora release). I tried using the method shown in 4.1
Preparing CD or DVD media, from the Installation Guide. I tried
every logical combination of the example used and I couldn't get
it to work. Probably some examples would have helped. Is
--device= /dev/hdc or CD-R/W or what? Is image-file.iso generic
or is it FC5-i386-disc1.iso or what? In any case, I couldn't
make it work. So I decided to try X-CD-Roast.
* It took about another hour to find 4.3.2.3 Writing ISOs with
X-CD-Roast from the Red Hat Linux Getting Started Guide --
linked through the Download and Installation Instructions. This
ISO burning Howto is excellent.
As a separate suggestion, I have used DiskDruid to set up custom
partitions in the past, however, this time I wanted to do things
slightly different. A fuller, more detailed Help button as opposed to
Release Notes during the DiskDruid part of the installation would have
been very useful.
In summary, all the info was there, it was just hard to find for a
newbie or someone suffering from a particularly bad brain cramp.

Fedora 5 installation experience
by RLLOYDNAVE123@wmconnect.com
I purchased a 5 disk X86 install disk set and installed Fedora 5 as a update
to
Fedora 4. The install ran to completion , but the screen menus were cut off
at the top and bottom of the screen. As a result I decided to try a clean
install
of Fedora 5.
So far my experiences with Fedora 5 have been less favorable than with Fedora
4.
I have encountered the following problems:
If I select additional packages and run a custom installation
the install process aborts after reporting missing or corrupted files
( Valgrind-calgrind and pam-devel ?) on disks three and four. This error
occurs even though
the initial disk validity check reports that all disks are good.
If I select the default installation the installer only uses the first 2
disks and the
install runs to completion.
After installing with the default configuration ( office productivity tools
only)
I attempted to add additional applications using the Add/remove software
tool found on the screen menu. This application reported that it could not
find
the software and aborted the process.
The only way I have found to install additional applications is by manually
running the rpm program and trying to guess which packages are needed.
There is also a problem with the NVIDIA 3-D graphics driver. It was necessary
to upgrade the linux kernel to a newer version in order to get the video to
work properly.
I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or if there is a problem with
Fedora 5.
My computer seems to be mostly working now. However, it does not seem to
be noticeably improved over the previous Fedora 4 release.
It would be nice if the installer could skip over bad packages and continue
trying to finish rather than rebooting causing me to waste about 3 hours of my
time.

Web interface to available yum packages
by Federico
Does anyone knows if there is a web script (php/perl/python) that shows me in a
nice formatted way the available packages to install (with the description,
dependencies, etc...)?.
I was trying to develop a really simple one using using php and reading the yum
cache files:
/var/cache/yum/core/primary.xml.gz
/var/cache/yum/core/primary.xml.gz.sqlite
I thought that using the sqlite one could give better performances but i ran
into this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=187681
(Basically the php sqlite module can't open the databases created by the last
version of sqlite).
Before staring to write a more complicated php scrpit to parse the XML file...
does anyone know if there is already a similar project going on?
Thanks in advance.

Citrix ICA Client vs. SELinux
by Eric Brunson
With the latest upgrade of the kernel (2.6.16-1.2080_FC5) my Citrix
client stopped working. Booting into the previous kernel
(2.6.15-1.2054_FC5) will allow me to run it, but in the current kernel
on two machines it segfaults, on the machine I'm on now it gives this error:
clotho(~)$ /usr/lib/ICAClient/wfica -icaroot /usr/lib/ICAClient -nosplash -desc hemo1
Error: 75 (E_DYNLOAD_FAILED)
Please refer to the documentation.
Error loading dynamic module:
"/usr/lib/ICAClient/CHARICONV.DLL"
/usr/lib/ICAClient/CHARICONV.DLL: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied
The "Permission denied" led me to try disabling selinux enforcement,
which allowed it to run again. Is there enough information in the
message above for someone to speculate on a policy change that will
allow that dll to load?
Thanks,
e.

[OT] Sendmail's vacation
by Ashley M. Kirchner
I'm trying to figure out how to properly set up sendmail's vacation
program based on the way things are configured on our network.
There are three machines in this game: a master MX that accept
inbound e-mail for our domains. That MX will then push the messages
through to a spool server which then stores it. The server containing
user accounts exports user data through NIS+ to the spool server, and
also NFS mounts /var/mail/ from the spool server.
The problem now is that when a user sets up a vacation message, it
never works because mail doesn't ever actually get delivered to that
machine...only to the spool server. But, the users don't have access to
the spool server, nor does it actually hold any physical folder
information for each user, so I wouldn't know how or where to set their
vacation to begin with. Oh, and the same applies for anything else
related to it, like .forward for example. Because mail doesn't
physically get delivered to the server containing the user's physical
account, anything they do won't work.
Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this issue, without having
to reconfigure or redo the whole setup? This is a live, very active,
setup, and I can't afford down time.
Thanks.

question on networks
by Bob Schmidt
Hi All,
I'm new to Fedora, and Gnome. I get this error message when trying to
connect to another computer on my home network:
The filename "CLINE" indicates that this file is of type "desktop
configuration file". The contents of the file indicate that the file is
of type "x-directory/smb-share". If you open this file, the file might
present a security risk to your system.
Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received
the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the
correct extension for "x-directory/smb-share", then open the file
normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific
application for the file.
I am running fedora core 5, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

[SELinux] play real media files with no video
by Leo
Hi there,
I have googled and can't find a solution. Most of the install notes
out there don't mention this problem, so it might be specific to my
machine though I doubt it.
After reading threads of SELinux in this group, I feel like enabling
SELinux. The safety of my data is far more important. However, when
setting SELinux to enforcing, realplay plays rm media files with no
pictures.
Attached is the full audit log. Thank you in advance.
