/var Filesystem Space
by Gene Poole
I've got /var on a separate filesystem. Since I've upgraded to FC6, I've
discovered that the space is not adequate to support the FC6 updates. Two
questions:
1. Can someone give me a estimate on how large this filesystem should
be?
2. How can I add space to a standard ext3 filesystem?
I realize that the initial update will require the most space, so a
temporary increase would be the best.
Thanks,

need help tuning ethernet and disk I/O, dropped packets during disk writes
by Wade Hampton
G'day,
I need help optimizing a server so it can maximize incoming network traffic
(UDP) and
write the data to disks over a 100T network connection. My system works
well with
no dropped packets until I turn on disk writes to the SATA disks. I have
tried tuning
the network parameters but with marginal success.
Motherboard/CPU: Supermicro with dual 1000T interfaces, TG3
driver, 3.2GP4 (HT enabled)
Disks: dual 80G SATA disks
Network: TG3 driver
O/S: Fedora Core 4, 2.6.17-1.2142
Tuning options used:
via kernel: /proc/sys/net/core/rmem_max 2500000
/proc/sys/net/core/wmem_max 2500000
/proc/sys/net/core/netdev_max_backlog 20000
via ethtool, interrupt coalesce itmes:
rx-usec 100
rx-frames 20
via ethtool, RX ring size to max allowd by driver:
rx 511
Disk:
originally SW RAID, experienced lots of errors when write was enabled
changed to single partition, formatted with mke2fs -m 0 -b 4096, far
fewer write errors
I am still getting groups of dropped packets when cron.daily or weekly runs
and at random times.
The errors seem to be groups of missed packets and rarely a single packet.
I did find a similar
problem that someone else reported and am wondering if this could be the
same problem
(both are using Supermicro motherboards and the on-board TG3 driver):
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-ide&m=115689223417994&w=2
Any ideas? Can I lower the priority of writes to disk? Are there serial
options I can use? Are
there updates to the tg3 driver I could try (for example really large rx
buffers beyond 511)?
Cheers,

rh-errata
by Aaron Konstam
Someone suggested the use of rh-errata. As far as I can see it does not
work on fedora in that no version number related to fedora can be used.
Can some one explain its use if I am wrong?

fglrx drivers unusable since FC6
by DJ Delorie
I've got a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an ATI Mobility X1300 display.
With FC5, the fglrx drivers from livna worked fine. With FC6, I've
not yet been able to get any version working.
Older versions, like 8.25, won't build at all. 8.29 builds, but
doesn't work (the now famous "PreInitDAL failed" message). 8.30 or
newer segfault on startup (after the PreInitDAL message), either
livna's or one built from ATI's download.
Does anyone have fglrx drivers working with an X1300 at 1680x1050
resolution? If so, what version, and could you mail me a copy of your
xorg.conf? I'm hoping that it's something missing there that's
breaking things.

FC6 Dlink DBT-120 V4
by Charles Fuller
All,
I have been looking around for information on how to get my Dlink
DBT-120 ver 4 Bluetooth usb adapter to work with FC6. I have seen one
posting that says it works. Despite the one reference I am having
problems with the device being seen on my laptop.
Prior to using FC6 it worked fine in FC5 and I was able to do DUN with
my Treo 650. The device still shows the power and link likes but as far
as I can tell no joy.
The first place I looked prior to dealing with the Bluetooth issue was
if I could see the USB device. I do not see the device when I use
'lsusb'. Below is the output from .config parsed for both USB settings
and then for the Bluetooth, output from "lspci -v". One last thing the
usb subsystem is able to mount and read/write to usb thumb drives, usb
hard drives and external usb DVD drive with no problem.

Nvidia dual head under FC6
by Steve Underwood
Hi,
I have been happily using the Nvidia driver with a dual head setup on an
AMD X2 box running FC5 for x86_64. I just upgraded to FC6. Now I can
only get a single head setup to work. Has anything changed in how you
configure dual head setups? What I get in Xorg.0.log is the following:

Yep. ext2ifs seems to work fine for me as well, and in the other direction ntfs-3g
seems to work well (and finally lets me peek inside things like the system
restore directories XP won't let me look at :-).

Why use sed? How about:
cat file | head --lines=-3 | awk '{if (/-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----/)
exit; print $0;}'
The head --lines=-3 prints the file after skipping the first three
lines. The little awk program prints everything until it gets to the
PGP signature line.

Dave
