yum localupdate weirdness on x86_64
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
Warning: long.
Summary:
(1) yum isn't doing what I want with respect to updating packages that
come in i386 and x86_64 architectures.
(2) one example looks like a bug
Background:
I'm trying to install FC6 for x86_64 on my notebook (this is not going
smoothly, but that is a topic for another time).
I have an NFS server with a copy of all the updated RPMs.
I'm trying to apply these updates.
In the past, I've applied updates from the NFS server by doing:
yum localupdate *.rpm
(In the more distant past, I used
rpm -Fv *.rpm
but that didn't work well when updated packages had new dependencies.)
Right now, this yum command is failing to do what I want. I think
that this is a bug but it may be a feature.
For example, I have kdegraphics for x86_66 installed:
# rpm -qa --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}\n' | grep kdegraphics
kdegraphics-devel-3.5.4-1.fc6.x86_64
kdegraphics-devel-3.5.4-1.fc6.i386
kdegraphics-3.5.4-1.fc6.x86_64
I don't know why I had kdegraphics-devel for i386 installed. I've
now removed it.
The updates repository for x86_64 has two versions of kdegraphics:
kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.i386.rpm
kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.x86_64.rpm
I don't know why, but it ought to be harmless. It isn't.
To me, harmless would mean that this command would do nothing, but
that isn't the case:
yum localupdate kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.i386.rpm
Instead, here's what it proposes to do:
=============================================================================
Package Arch Version Repository Size

Transaction Summary
=============================================================================
Install 5 Package(s)
Update 5 Package(s)
Remove 0 Package(s)
Why would it replace an x86_64 package with an i386 package?
Given that it is doing so, why does it care at all about x86_64 libraries (like kdelibs and qt)?
Curiouser and curiouser: these two commands act differently:
yum localupdate kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.i386.rpm kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.x86_64.rpm
yum localupdate kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.x86_64.rpm kdegraphics-3.5.5-0.1.fc6.i386.rpm
I would have expected yum to ignore order (and pick the newest best match).
The first proposes to do this, a natural extension of above. This is
a natural extension of what the previous just-i386 command proposed to
do. I would rather that it realized that the x86_64 version trumped
the i386 version (ie. closer to being an update).

The second balks with this error message:

What the heck? It is unfortunate that this dependency does not
mention %{ARCH}. Even so, it makes no sense since both archs'
packages will be present
This looks like a bug to me. Is there a reasonable explanation?

TeXmacs on fedora Core 6 ?
by Jan Brosius
Hi,
Can someone build the rpm package of TeXmacs for fedora Core 6 x86-64?
One can find TeXmacs at http://www.texmacs.org/ . There exists an rpm
package of TeXmacs for Fedora Core 5 (both 386 and 86_64).
Is someone working on it?
Thanks

Actually I can't seem to start any services from an ssh session. They
start fine from the server.
run_init command didn't work.
Any suggestions?

libcgicc equiv in FC6?
by Phil Meyer
I have a developer who wants to download and use the old gnu libgcicc
libraries.
A search turned up no rpms for this library.
Is this library obsolete? Replaced by something newer/better?
Any clues are welcome.

Dual Head with FC6 on Intel GMA 950
by Guido Leisker
Dear all.
I am trying to get my Intel GMA 950 - which is in a Thinkpad T60 - running under
Fedora Core 6.
The Thinkpad-Display worked out of the box. Even the Desktop Effects are running
well. But now I have wobbling windows and a Cube of workspaces, but dual head is
still not running.
Trying to tell Fedora to start with both screens (the TFT of the Thinkpad and a
extern Benq FP 767 plugged to the Docking) by using system-config-display does
not help. FC starts, like I didn't do anything, with only the LCD of the
notebook.
So I tried a mix of my humble xorg-conf-skills and some xorg-confs I found in
the net. (Thinkwiki, ...)
The result is, that FC starts fine at the first time, but I am not able to log
out and in again or restart X by typing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE. X won't start a sec
time. Here are some Errors of Xorg.0.log:
> I810(0): V_BIOS address 0x7d8e0 out of range
> I810(0): VBE initialization failed.
> [..]
> Backtrace: [...]
> Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting
:q
There are some warnings in the logfile from the first start too:
> (WW) I810(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
> (WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found
> (WW) I810(0): Unable to estimate virtual size

reports (12288 kB)

Unfortunately I do not know what a V-Bios is, or what it does mean to Enabling
LVDS directly. Pipe B..
Has anyone any idea? May be some hints, a link to a good wiki, some working
xorg.confs?
Here is my xorg.conf:

thanking for any help

Proposed changes for fedora
by Antonio Olivares
Dear all,
When visiting Distrowatch.com, I found the following
information about Fedora
http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20061127
Far-reaching changes affecting the Fedora distribution
are looming on the horizon. Discussed by the project's
core developers during the recently concluded Fedora
Summit, a number of new ideas are currently being
submitted for approval by Red Hat. If they are
accepted, the "Core" and "Extras" parts of Fedora will
merge into what is tentatively called Fedora
"Complete", with two separate products, named "Fedora
Desktop" and "Fedora Server", emerging from the huge
software list. Extending the current support period of
about 9 months to around 13 months is another
important proposal that will please many Fedora users.
Those who enjoy remastering the distribution for their
own purposes will be excited to learn about "pungi"
and "pilgrim", two tools that will allow building
custom distributions and live CDs/DVDs. Pilgrim is
also expected to help with delivering an official
Fedora live CD/DVD. There is a lot more - please visit
the Proposed Changes to the Release Process and Live
CD Roadmap pages on FedoraProject.org for more details
about these and other changes affecting the popular
distribution.
Is there any way for the community to have some input
on these issues?
Is there also another way to find out that these
changes are being proposed? Many community members
are uninformed and object to some changes when they
are made, but since they had no voice they could not
do anything about it.
Some of these changes like "Fedora Total" seem very
logical. We'll still have to wait and see what
happens.
Regards,
Antonio

usb neworking problem
by Chris Howard
Fedora Core 5, newly installed on a Dell D620 laptop.
I'm having problems with a usb network device Linksys USB200M.
Google searches seem to indicate there was some kind of
hardware change in midstream with this device and newer ones
were causing problems. But I haven't seen any resolution
to the issue yet.
Network configuration tools can be made to recognize the device
and load the asix device driver. But it refuses to actually work.
Any ideas?
