Any hardware RAM disk that can use ECC RAM?
by Vijay Gill
Hi,
I have a few gigabytes of RAM (Crucial make - ECC registered) lying
around (recovered from my retired PCs) and I was thinking if I could
use some sort of RAM disk (hardware based like a PCI card etc).
I cannot use it in my current motherboards because they require
unbuffered non-ECC RAM.
It may be just a stupid idea but I would like to experiment with
having swap file on such RAM disk (and if there is a battery backup,
even the OS can live there).
I saw one such product from Gigabyte (iRAM) but it does not support
ECC RAM. Tried googling, most of the results were about people
complaining about iRAM not supporting ECC RAM :)
Does anybody know of such a product?
Thanks
Vijay

LCD Monitor intermittant "Out of Range"
by Michael Satterwhite
I have a 19" LCD monitor (Starlogic) running at 1024x768 75 Hz.
*SOMETIMES* it refuses to allow a boot, coming up with an "Out of Range"
error. Last night, after running all day, I logged out and left the
machine up (to run backups, etc). When I logged out, I properly got the
login screen. At some point overnight, the "Out of Range" error occurred
. I have no idea what time - or what would have caused it to switch from
a proper login screen to no longer putting out a good video signal.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Strange Ethernet Problem on FC5 x86 (port changes randomly once rebooted!)
by Jake Angulo
Guys,
This problem is blowing me away, i really wonder if somebody else has
experienced this. No errors at all!
But what is strange is the behavior of my ethernet ports.
OS: FC5 i386 kernel-smp-2.6.18-1.2200.fc5.i686.rpm
Machine: Dell Poweredge w/ 2 broadcom gb ethernet, and 2 intel 10/100
ethernet.
So basically, i have: eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3
What happens is that for every random "n" times i reboot my machine, my
network interface assignments (eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3) seem to be be
randomly interchanged!
ie: eth0 before reboot, becomes eth3 or eth1 after reboot, and so on!
At first i thought one port was defective, but then i realized what was
happening when i tried to physically move the UTP cable from one port to
another, and miraculously i can now ping what used to be my logical port,
magically transferred to another physical port!
I can't backout and reinstall another version now, I have already fully
configured the machine, with all webhosting apps that we're running, and all
necessary bloody configs done.
I have tried to manually change the IPs/interfaces, by editing the
appropriate /etc files (i definitely know which files), i also tried through
"setup" on the prompt, system-config-networking, and even via XWindows
network admin tool. I even tried disabling all the rest of the eth, leaving
only one. I think i tried all humanely possible things.
Note, that this machine is a proven machine (stable under RH9, until i
reinstalled OS to FC5). I have other machines that are stable under FC4,
running on prod environment w/ an ave of 150 hosted domains in each. I just
rebooted remotely a while ago, and now i cant enter my machine because i
already know whats happening. Of course it booted up --- the only thing to
do to access it is to unplug the UTP cable, and plug it to wherever port is
now active. Isnt this crazy?!
Pls help! Any suggestions, or thoughts, or links to solutions would be very
highly appreciated.
Thanks!

Yum Update not working
by maillist@sios.ca
I had to reinstall Core 6. Everything has gone well until I tried to
up date
At the command line if I try yum update I get the following error
ftp://ftp.safe.ca/pub/clement-2.1/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4]
IOError: [Errno ftp error] 550 Failed to change directory.
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: clement
From the gui if I use the "software updater" I receive this error in an
"unable to retrieve information box "Cannot open/read repomd.xml file
for repository: clement"
I have yum updater enabled but it does not return any indication of
updates after I reboot the system.
When I go to the ftp site I notice that there seems to be a missing
subdirectory in the address between clement-2.1 and repodata. the ftp
site indicates there should be a "fc6" subdirectory. The bottom is
there must be another way to do updates, what is it?

USB joysticks
by Sam Varshavchik
What's the situation with USB joystick support in FC? Poking into kernel
modules I see a couple of modules for specific USB joystick brands, but
nothing that looks like a generic USB joystick driver.
My laptop has no traditional joystick port, only USB ports. Anyone here
picked up any run-of-the-mill USB joystick device recently, and gotten it to
work?

chkconfig yum on function?
by Barry Yu
In FC5, I used chkconfig yum on, and verified with Administration->Server Settings->Services that yum service is on, I rebooted system and after 1/2 hour, used yum check-update, displayed a long list of items need to be updated - Seems yum auto update is not functioning at all. Next day I yum check-update again but still a long list of items to be updated.
How do I know yum auto update is working? In addition to chkconfig yum on, do I have to do anything else to make it work?

Setting up a Printer....
by Ted Gervais
ON a new FC6 installation I am trying to get my printer going. It is a
Deskjet 895Cxi. And the default installation shows no signs of working.
I am trying to use 'system-config-printer' to get things going and am
wondering if that is the only tool available or is there something else.
So far I have no luck in getting the printer to come to life..

Basically, I have a hardwired crossover link between the two machines to
be able to move files back and forth quickly without having to use
wireless. I have the firewall turned off on both windows and linux. Both
machines can see the internet and can ping each other over the wireless
(192) network. The windows machine can ping the linux machine but the
linux machine can't see the windows machine. I want to use samba to be
able transfer files but have to use putty for secure scp since linux
can't see the windows machine.
