vmstat - iostat - nfsstat
by Tom Brown
Hi
I urgently need to gather iostat, vmstat and nfsstat data on about 20
boxes and log the results running over about a 24hr period. A shared
filesystem is available to them all to record the data -
Does anyone know how i can do that as using things like vmstat and
iostat etc i am struggling to script the output into a file.
Any ideas?

PDF Viewers
by Michael Satterwhite
Although I use kde, I prefer gpdf to kpdf as a pdf viewer. Not sure why,
but I do. I was surprised to note that Fedora doesn't automatically
install gpdf. I tried to do a "yum search gpdf" and "yum whatprovides
gpdf" with gnome (I have both gnome and kde installed) and couldn't find
the package in the system.
Is gpdf really not available on Fedora. I can find the source and
compile it, but I feel I must be missing something.
Thanks in advance

yum gdm install fails after FC5 upgrade
by Jim Duda
I recently upgraded from FC4 to FC5. I'm struggling to get gdm up and running again. When I attempt to install gdm, I
get these error messages from yum.
I/O error : Attempt to load network entity http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.1.2/docbookx.dtd
/usr/share/gnome/help/gdm/zh_CN/legal.xml:9: parser error : Entity 'ldquo' not defined
As such, gdm doesn't install properly. I don't get the necessary /etc/X11/gdm directory installed.
I've tried to reinstall xml and docbook, but I still get these errors.
Something got hosed during the upgrade, but I don't know what to look for.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this?
Thanks,
Jim

Copy EVERYTHING
by Hadders
Hi all,
I've been busy lately asking about RAID configs and the like and
thanks to everyone who has provided feedback, it's been very helpful
So to recap. I'll be using two SATA disks with the Intel RAID
"hardware" set to RAID 0 so I can dual boot the system with XP.
I'll be reinstalling XP from scratch, as it's about time (some weird
Windows behavior going on).
However, I plan on booting up with a Fedora Core disk 1, using "linux
rescue" and working from there.
I assume that I will be able to see the SATA RAID container presented by
the Intel chipset at this more basic level?
Assuming I can, I'll create the new partitions I want in the container
and format them.
Then I'll mount the old partitions and run the following command I which
got from an earlier email
http://pj.freefaculty.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view.pl/Linuxtips/CopyEntireFiles...
> cd /oldpart; find . -xdev | cpio -padm /newpart
Is it really as easy as that to copy everything?
Thanks for any tips people can offer.

Warning: Inrecognized URI ???
by Erik P. Olsen
I've found the following two messages in /var/log/messages:
Dec 5 00:52:34 epohost python: hpssd[2872]: warning: Inrecognized URI:
socket://192.168.1.101:9100
Dec 5 00:52:34 epohost python: hpssd[2872]: warning: Inrecognized URI:
socket://192.168.1.111:9100
I suppose "Inrecognized" is a typo for Unrecognized. But what does it really
mean? The two devices are my lan attached printers and they perform flawlesly
inspite of this warning which btw can be found numerous times in the message log.

LaTeX
by roland
Hello everybody,
If have a FED3 installation and probably an outdated LaTeX.
Especially the LaTeX Tools Bundle fails sometimes to do what it should do.
How can I update this.
I tried yum update latex tetex
But this is not enough.
Thanks

Python 2.5 and SQlite 3
by Arthur Pemberton
When is Fedora going up to the more current versions of Python 2.5 and
Sqlite? I asked because I spent several hours today reading online
documentation on the two suites at python.org. I then spent a hour
trying to figure out why my code was failing.
Turned out that the version of the python wrapper for sqlite is older
that the currently maintained branch, and is also a poorly documented
version. I eventually found out that the module I was reading up on in
Python (sqlite3) was only in 2.5.
However, and luckily, the more updated version of the wrapper was in
the yum repos. However it was named python-sqlite2 while there was
also a package called sqlite2 which seems to be an older version of
sqlite.
So to summarize:
sqlite is sqlite3
sqlite2 seems to be the predecessor of sqlite3
python-sqlite is an older sparsely documented version of the wrapper
python-sqlite2 is the updated version of the wrapper
and the sqlite3 python module does not appear to exist in any repo.
I eventually solved the problem with some help over at #fedora,
#python and google.com
It would be nice if the RPM package descriptions at least explained
some of this. I did do several yum info queries in an attempt to find
out what I needed, but the descriptions are all quite generic.
Thank you.

Units??
by Anne Wilson
According to yum:
units.i386 1.85-1.2.2 installed
Matched from:
A utility for converting amounts from one unit to another.
I couldn't find it on the menu, so I tried :
/usr/bin/units
2438 units, 71 prefixes, 32 nonlinear units
You have:
Clearly this is not what I intended :-)
Question 1 - what units is this talking about?
Question 2 - does anyone know how I can access the 'units' converter?
