LogWatch reports errors while running ModProbe on install on sound_slot_1
by Jon Ingason
I have Dell OptiPlex GX110, PIII 800, running FC 2. I have been running
this system since November 2004. I have succeeded to the play music with
MPlayer. I have however noticed that LogWatch report regular folowing error:
--------------------- ModProbe Begin ------------------------
Errors running install command:
sound_slot_1 : 9 Time(s)
---------------------- ModProbe End -------------------------
I am just curious what is causing this message. I am using the sound
from the mothercard.

There are other open source solutions which can be used:
AMANDA (www.amanda.org)
Mondo (http://www.mondorescue.org/)

If you just want to make ISO's I would recommend using Mondo. You can make an
image and restore to CD's and there's also a rescue disk for restoring, etc

Re: firestarter and dhcp - SOLVED
by Mark Bidewell
Sorry to bombard the list with this problem. The dhclient-exit-hooks
addition is controled by the firestarter
Preferences->Firewall->Start/restart Firewall on DHCP lease renewal
option. Disabiling that box removes firestarter from dhclient-exit-hooks.

Did a little more reseach on the dhclient-exit-hooks (see man
dhclient-scripts for more info on its purpose). I tracked down the
adding of the line to the firestarter source code. Apparently, this is
the author's way of automatically starting the service independent of
any distro specific startup system. The RPM removes the line, but is
not responsible for its creation. I think the line will reappear any
time the firewall configuration is changed. Now to cobble a patch
together to make that optional...

Users acces to mounted NTFS
by Mohamed Ameur
Hi all,
I mounted my NTFS to /media/winxp directory, but when I logged in as a
normal user, didn't have permission to access.
Please can anyone explain to me how to make it accessible for users, and
please what's the best command to mount ntfs.
Mohamed Ameur.

How to install festival Spanish support?
by Mariano Draghi
How can I install "festival" Spanish support in FC4?
It seems that the default RPM comes only with English. I couldn't find
any additional festival RPMs either in core or in extras (other than the
devel RPM, which I pressume won't install any additional language...)
If I do
$ festival --language spanish
I get a
SIOD ERROR: unbound variable : voice_el_diphone
festival: fatal error exiting.
After Googlin' a while, it turns out that the error menans the specified
language's files aren't installed.
The output of
$ rpm -ql festival
reveals that there's no '/usr/share/festival/voices/spanish' files.
Is there a package with the other languages? ("yum list festival*" says
there isn't)

Batch creation of PDF files
by John Summerfield
I have a little perl that goes to a website (specifically
www.realestate.com.au) and does a search.
It analyzes the response and creates a web page of my own design,
complete with the thumbnail images.
My page has all the useful info I require, but without the ads. Also, I
can automatically drop those properties "under offer" or "under
contract." I'm not interested in those unless they come back on the market.
Extending it to follow selected links and create a series of "brochures"
for each property is a matter of a little more similar code: not a
difficult proposition.
What I'd like to be able to do is create PDF documents rather than HTML
- HTML is fine for viewing onscreen, but pretty poor for printing, and
when I go on inspections I like to have bits of paper.
What I don't know is what are suitable tools for the task. I suspect it
will involve one of more of XML, tex and latex.
I've Googled and found some aging documents that might help (but I don't
know how long it will take to learn enough XML etc), nor whether the art
has moved on significantly.
I do not want to do the PDF creation manually, and this rules out OOo
and similar.
I would like to be able to control image size (as in HTML) so all
documents look similar, images don't split over pages and so on.
What I'd like is any hints, tutorials, samples and, of course, guidance
on where to look for more information.

Cheers
