FC4 -- icmp open socket error
by Tony Crouch
Hi All,
I recently did a clean install of FC4 on my computer and everything has
been working fine until about an hour ago.
I restarted my computer and it failed to connect to our network DHCP
server, displaying the error, "icmp open socket: permission denied"
during the boot stage. I don't understand why this has suddenly started
occurring. It has been connecting fine all week.
I rebooted into Windows XPoo to ensure that our DHCP hadn't died. XPoo
finds and connects to the DHCP server no problem at all.
If you guys would like I can post my iptables file, if you think it will
help provide some answers.
I have, for the time being, statically set my network details in order
to still gain network access.
Thanks for your assistance.
Cheers,
Tony Crouch

Ndis Wrapper Installation
by ridan abid
Hey,
Currently I am using FC2, and Im trying to set up a
wireless card by NetGear. The Model Number is MA401. I
have the generic drivers for XP. And its been a while
since i used Ndis. The NdisWrapper version that Im
currently using is 1.2, i believe the latest. Keeping
in mind that I am a beginner, can some one take me
through all the steps that a ten year old could
possibly understand. Im over exaggerating a bit, still.

no voice with xine
by Globe Trotter
Hi,
Over the past two weeks, ever since xine got upgraded, I have had a strange
issue with xine. There is no sound anymore. Moreover, when I quit, this is what
I get:
$ xine -f mov.mpg
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.3.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
mkdir(/local) failed: Permission denied
Any suggestions? My home directory is in /usr/local rather than /home, but none
of this has ever been an issue.
Moreover there is no issue with mplayer in terms of sound et al. Running FC4
and the latest 2.6.12 kernel, but the previous 2.6.11 of before yesterday had
the same issue.
Many thanks and best wishes!

Another WiFi question...
by radioact1ve
Hey everyone!
Hows it going? Well like others, I have a wifi laptop and I put FC4.
Want to move about the place with it, I installed ndiswrapper (from
source) and drivers. It's all installed, sees my card (a built in
broadcom (4306 I think)) When I reboot, dmesg sees the module and its
loaded fine. I set the mode, key and channel. But for some reason it
just won't work.
It has to be a setting mistake on my part. From here I don't know
where to go b/c I don't get any errors. I don't know where to look for
them. Any clues? Thanks!
Just in case, It's a presario r3000 laptop (AMD64 but running x86 FC4)
and like I said its a built in broadcom chip.

I've been using AMANDA (www.amanda.org) which has worked well for me.

yum - lack of features
by Dan Track
Hi
Can anyone tell me why yum lacks the following ( or maybe it me):
1) Can't force a reinstall of package
2) Can't force a package to install if there are some minor dependencies
3) Can't fetch a package
number 1 and 3 are my most important issues.
Anyone got any ideas why that is?
Thanks

FC4 US 104-keyboard right "windows" key problem
by Wolfgang S. Rupprecht
I see a problem with the right-handed "windows" key sending a button-4
(!!!) event. Both emacs and xev claimed it was sending a mouse
button-4 event. I do have a scroll-wheel 5-button mouse on the
machine and the right windows key does do the same scroll-up action as
the mouse does. Weird.
This is under the default installation on an amd64 FC4 system w. a
standard 104 key US keyboard and selecting US as the language. Are
others seeing the same thing or is something screwed up on my system?
