Java Debugger for FC1
by Michael Sullivan
Can anyone recommend a good free Java debugger for Fedora Core 1? I was
using the BlueJ IDE to debug my programs, but it freaks out when it
encounters a thread other than the main thread. Can anyone help me?

Re: fedora-list Digest, Vol 6, Issue 348
by Pietro R.A. Binetti
Firstly I apologize for the wrong indication: I am stuck on 640x480
resolution (not 800x600) and I want to have 800x600 (not 1024x768).
However
the problem doesn't change so much: I am still stuck.
Some of you suggested me to look at the video memory in my BIOS
settings.
Now there are 2 problems:
1. accessing my BIOS settings at the startup I can't see anywhere issues
relating on video memory
2. I checked my system hardware and I discovered that my video card
shares
the memory with the RAM: it takes 8MB of 128MB. It does mean something,
doesn't it?
I also checked on the Acer webpage: there are no updates available for
my
BIOS.
Regards,
Pietro

Thanks for responding.
I did check that and it is fine.
hosts: files dns
Also KDE is very slooooooow to start up without network.
But once I plug in network cable as KDE starts up it springs back to
life.

resolv.conf slows down X
by Rokicki, Andrew
I am running FC2 KDE desktop
If I am on a network my X works just fine and is very responsive.
When I unplug PC from the network and reboot X is very slow to respond.
Once an application starts it behaves normally. It just takes forever to
load.
I noticed that if I remove resolv.conf file it works fine when it off the
network.
content of resolv.conf
search mydomain.com
nameserver ip_of_nameserver1
nameserver ip_of_nameserver2
Could somebody explain to me how to fix it and what is going on.
Thanks

Lynx
by Adam Boettiger
Apologies for the basic question, but...
I'm reading this book about FC 2 and it says that Lynx is
supposed to be included and can be launched from the command line
simply by typing lynx. Was this a misprint in the book or was
Lynx no longer included in FC?

'Operation not permitted' on firewire/NTFS external HD
by CB
I have an external firewire drive with an NTFS partition mounted thus:
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/ext1 type ntfs (rw)
When I try and create/delete any files or directories under /mnt/ext1, I
get 'Operation not permitted' (all files & dirs currently there were
placed under windows xp). I can do these operations fine on a vfat
partition on the same drive.
Any ideas?

Re: fedora-list Digest, Vol 6, Issue 362
by Rik Blacketer
Hi
Its a Sony VAIO PCG FR102. The soundcard detected is: VIA Technologies,
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller. Module: snd-via82xx
I get sound, but it sounds like it plays a clip, and it freezes and
repeats forever, so im guessing the driver is nearly there but not quite
right.
I run the GNOME soundcard detection facility, which yes i do believe
runs system-config-soundcard.
I made a note of everything about the soundcard from windows, but i
didnt want to put it all in last message as i dont want to insult, not
sure what info i need! Your welcome to it if you think it might help.

[FC2] OT - Desert Combat F-16 bug
by Shockwave
I have been operating a game server for the better part of a year that
runs a very popular mod of BattleField 1942 called Desert Combat. From
the start, I have been using Fedora Core 1 on a hyper-threaded P4 2.8GHz
system using the SMP kernel and have enjoyed fantastic stability and
performance. Just yesterday I upgraded the system to Fedora Core 2 and
have noticed something strange. All of a sudden, every F-16 fighter
that spawns on any map has its right rear wheel sunk into the ground.
The game files are the same exact ones from the system when it was
running FC1 so that can't be the cause.
The game itself has two versions of the executable. One is statically
linked and one is dynamically linked. I have tried both and the problem
still occurs. This seems to indicate to me that the problem lies with
operating system files that both versions require. I did a little
research and ran "ldd" against both the static and dynamic versions of
the executable. Here are the results:
Static build
======================
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00c7e000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x00c59000)
libncurses.so.5 => /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x03798000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x00d71000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x00b3c000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00b1f000)
Dynamic build
======================
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00c7e000)
libncurses.so.5 => /usr/lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x03798000)
libstdc++.so.5 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 (0x0023a000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x00c59000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00191000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x00d71000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x00b3c000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00b1f000)
The only lines that differ between the two are these:
libstdc++.so.5 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5 (0x0023a000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x00191000)
While it is possible that only the lines in common are to blame, it is
also logical to assume that it may be related to an interface between
them and other system components. Not having a tremendous amount of
experience with C under Linux, I'm not quite sure where to go next but I
am certainly willing to roll up my sleeves and dive in head first.
If determining the specific cause of this problem by someone who isn't a
developer of the game itself is not feasible, then my question is this:
Is it possible to isolate the pieces specific to FC1 and use them in
some sort of artificial environment on FC2? If that is possible,
perhaps the game server could be tricked into believing that the system
was actually FC1. That assumes, of course, that this isn't some kernel
related issue which certainly cannot be circumvented.
The gaming community tends to be fairly picky about this sort of thing
and might not feel comfortable playing on our server for matches if this
bug persists. That would mean I would need to go back to FC1 and lose
the benefits of the advances in FC2. That's something I would obviously
like to avoid. I and others have posted about this problem for some
time now and the developers of the mod probably won't respond because
they have moved on to bigger and better things. If anyone could point me
in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

X support missing
by pinaki@ics.uci.edu
Hi,
I am using FC2 and trying to build Kaffe. It gives me the error "missing X
support" while I run 'configure' before 'make'. Can somebody tell me how
to install this component. Does this mean that I am missing only the
source files for X? Because I can open X applications like Xterm. I looked
for the directory X11 in /usr/includes, but it's not there. Also I
couldn't find the file libXt.* in /usr/lib.
Can somebody please help soon.
Many thanks.
