How to disable ipchains for sshd
by John Aldrich
It appears that the default firewall rules in FC3 /deny/ ssh access to the
system. How do I go about writing rules to permit ssh access? I have maybe 3
or four IP addresses that need to be able to log into my linux box, other
than that, no one else needs to be able to access it.
Thanks...

OO in FC2
by Jonathan Allen
All,
One of my users just told me about a change to OO that crept in during
the update process in FC2. In OO on the CDs, in the File-Open selector,
you could right-click on a file and rename or delete a file from the
'current' directory. In the updated version, right-click only offers
to "Show Hidden Files".
Can someone please tell me where has the delete or rename file facility gone ?

HELP SSHD crashes on startup
by John Aldrich
Fresh install of Fedora Core 3 and SSH crashes on startup with the
following error (snipped from /var/log/secure):
Dec 1 05:47:53 slave1 sshd[2390]: Server listening on :: port 22.
Dec 1 05:47:53 slave1 sshd[2390]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0
failed: Address already in use.
What the heck is going on here and how do I fix it? I use my linux box
through an SSH-tunneled VNC session from work for the most part because my
wife is jealous of my computer. ;-)
Seriously, I need to be able to ssh into my box and work... any ideas?
Thanks.

[BlueZ] identifying the installed subsystem
by soraberri
BlueZ stack for bluetooth is composed of two main parts: the kernel modules
and the user libs and tools.
Both, the kernel and the libs&tools are continously upgrading through
kernel patches or newer versions respectively.
Now, BlueZ stack is included in the Fedora Core3 distribution (kernel is
2.6.9...) and my question is, how can I know which exact version or upgrades
does fedora include?, and also, how to indentify all those files in the
system that conform the whole blueZ subsystem?

Can timidity replace /dev/sequencer for all MIDI playback?
by Timothy Ha
I have installed timidity++ from Freshrpms.net for Fedora Core 3. It
works very well, playing my MIDIs to the AC97-type soundcard.
Since my soundcard doesn't have MIDI support by default, I would like to
know how to make timidity play all MIDIs. Perhaprs, musical software
like Rosegarden or NoteEdit can play MIDIs through timidity.
But what about Wine? It seems to play MIDIs through /dev/sequencer or
something like that? Can I route all MIDI usage from Wine and things
like that through timidity?
Thanks,
Timothy.

Fedora Core 3 can't detect a DVD.
by Erik P. Olsen
I can see from the archive that FC3 has severe problems with DVDs. I
have, however, not seen any message desribing my problem with DVDs.
Whenever I insert a DVD FC3 mounts it as a CD-ROM and consequently it is
displayed as empty. The DVD in question is the downloaded FC3
installation DVD. And it is correctly burnt because I have installed FC3
from it. I discovered the problem with I wanted to update my FC3 system
with an additional function and after it requested the DVD (actually CD
no. 2) it wasn't able to read the DVD. Later I just inserted the DVD to
see how it would be mounted and that's where I saw it mounted as a CD-
ROM.
I don't think I missed anything in the installation of FC3 I just wonder
if there is anything I can do to make my FC3 system detect the DVD when
one is inserted. Perhaps I should report it to Bugzilla?

Flash card detected, but system hang up when try to open it
by Xia Bin
Hi
I really like the automount function. It works smoothly with my
cdrecorder. But I have no luck with my flash card.
I'm using GNOME as my desktop, my flash card can be detected--which
means an icon will appera on my desktop titled like "131M Removable
Media". But when I click it (or type "ll /media/usbdisk) the system will
hangs up.
Here is a snapshot of my /etc/fstab file when the flash card is pluged in:
/dev/sda1 /media/usbdisk vfat
pamconsole,noatime,sync,fscontext=system_u:object_r:removable_t,exec,noauto,managed
0 0
I have disabled a system serivces called "amd", could that be the reason?
Thanks

gnome pilot and a handspring visor?
by Terry R. Grier
Hello all.
I am trying to get gnome pilot to sync with my visor deluxe. (I know it
is old unit but it has been very reliable)
I cannot get past the setup screen when gnome pilot is trying its first
sync with it. the visor responds that it timed out.
Does it work with visors? or just palms? ... or is my palm os too old?
Thank you.

FC3: failed to create gpg key
by Xia Bin
Hi all,
It seems that I have some problems in sending this post to the
gnupg-users mailing list, so I post a copy here.
The "gpg --gen-key" command failed on my machine,
Here is the error message:
----------------------------------------------
gpg: no writable public keyring found: eof
Key generation failed: eof
gpg: can't create `/home/xia/.gnupg/random_seed': No such file or directory
----------------------------------------------
Is there anything I missed?
Thanks

Xsane and hpoj not working together? [FC3]
by G.Wolfe Woodbury
Does anyone use xsane and an HPOJ scanner to read photos under FC3?
Under FC1 my scanner operated fine, but the upgrade to FC3 seems to have
knocked out the scanning functions.
I've checked the sane-project and xsane websites and they seem to
indicate that just installing hpoj and configuring the OJ700 should make
xsane see the scanner. However, sane/xsane just report no device
available for scanning to me as both a normal user and as root. SELinux
is in permissive mode so it doesn't seem to be a permissions problem.
Any hints appreciated!
