Cron output on gnome
by Rodolfo Alcazar Portillo
Hi all. Im trying to popup a daily message from cron. My newbie personal
crontab has just this:
28 15 * * * /usr/bin/zenity --info --text "Prepare results report"
Ok, but this can't find my display, so it just will send me a error
mail. How can I raise a window with zenity from cron?
TIA, best regards.

FC2 -> FC3 issue with Partition table entries not in disk order
by Michael Mansour
Hi,
I have two pretty much identical servers, each with a
Linux software RAID 1 mirror comprised of 2x 9Gb
disks.
On of them I installed a fresh FC3 copy (call it
server1), with the following disk layouts:
# fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 9056 MB, 9056904704 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1101 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id
System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 14 407 3164805 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda3 408 774 2947927+ fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda4 775 1101 2626627+ 5
Extended
/dev/sda5 775 905 1052226 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda6 906 1036 1052226 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda7 1037 1101 522081 82
Linux swap
on other one (call it server2) I did the same thing in
terms of disks, but as it was already an FC2 server, I
went through the upgrade process using the FC3 CD's to
upgrade the OS.
The following is the disk layout of server2:
# fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 9056 MB, 9056904704 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1101 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id
System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 1037 1101 522112+ 82
Linux swap
/dev/sda3 14 407 3164805 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda4 408 1036 5052442+ 5
Extended
/dev/sda5 408 774 2947896 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda6 775 905 1052226 fd
Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda7 906 1036 1052226 fd
Linux raid autodetect
Partition table entries are not in disk order
server2 seems to be working fine, but this is a weird
issue since I built the filesystems originally like
server1 under FC2, and the upgrade process has seemed
to make modifications which are undesirable. Notice
the warning at the bottom of the fdisk output?
How can I fix this?
Thanks.
Michael.

ppp connection to Tungsten E fails
by Anca Tibor- Attila
Hi list,
I used my Palm Tungsten E under SuSE 9.1 prof. quite easy, without
problems. I set up the ppp connection according to a script in the net:
# PalmPPP - By Patrick Khoo - March 6, 2000
# See how we were started
case "$1" in
start)
# Start PPP Link to Palm
echo -n "Starting PalmPPP: "
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyUSB1 115200 192.168.0.2:192.168.0.5 \
passive local crtscts noauth nodeflate proxyarp \
-detach ms-dns 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 \
asyncmap 0
echo "Done."
echo " "
;;
stop)
# Stop PPP Link to Palm
echo -n "Stopping PalmPPP: "
killall pppd
echo "Done."
echo ""
;;
*)
echo "Usage: palmppp {start|stop}"
echo " "
exit 1
esac
exit 0
Thi I needed for my AvantGo and VersaMail settings. The thing functioned
without problems; I could fetch my mails, send them, synchronize with
AvantGo. Since I am under Fedora Core 3 the Palm device allways tells
me, it is not able to resolve (e.g. pop.gmx.net); it asks, if I could
provide the numeric IP of the server. I did it, but it did not help.
The device knows a primary DNS (that is my router, I am hanging on); I
did not change anything on the script above, I just burned it and
copied onto the new system.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks in advance,

yum & cyrus update on fc2
by Aleksandar Milivojevic
I had a strange problem with yum and latest cyrus updated for Fedora Core 2.
Basically, whey I ran "yum upgrade", yum downloaded headers for new
cyrus packages, and than concluded there's nothing to update. Not
surprising, since it downloaded headers that said
cyrus-*-0-2.2.10-1.fc2. I've noticed that bunch (but not all) of other
files in headers directory have "0" prepended to version. The version
number of actaull RPMs were correct (cyrus-*-2.2.10-1.fc2) So yum
probably decided that "0-2.2.10-1.fc2" is older than "2.2.x-xx"
installed on the system (don't remember what was previous version).
There are several more recent updates suffering from this.
I solved the problem by downloading packages by hand and doing rpm -Fhv
cyrus* perl-Cyrus*.
Is the Fedora Core 2 repository broken?

Problems with SSL accessw through a web browser
by akonstam@trinity.edu
I am getting a little frustrated by the following. I am trying to
access imaps service through a web browser. I have constructed a
imap.pem certificate file which works well when I do accesses to the
server from mutt.
However, when I try access to imaps through a web server using a
https:// web address the results are baffling.
First the certificate the web browser returns from the server is not
the imap certificate. That is not that surprising. The certificate
returned is generic without any of the usual field filled with
meaningful content. The statement is given that this certificate
(represented by a file I cannot find) belongs to
localhost@localdomain rather than out server (which is true).
Then I get the strange error statement that:
new.host.name cannot be found.
At this point we can go no further.
Can someone hint how one creates this needed certificate and where the
file resides and under what name. I saw there was a Makefile that is
supposed to do this but all I managed to do using that Makefile is
secure the httpd server so that it could not be restarted without
entering a passphrase.
Anyone have information on this they are willing to share?

FC3: how many CDs are necessary?
by Jon Haugsand
Running originally FC1, upgraded not completely successfully through
apt-get to FC2, I am ready for the FC3. I prefer to use the net as
much as possible, but think the installer is best for the initial
upgrade. Am I right here?
Anyway, do I need all the five CDs for my upgrade?

Debmirror for Fedora
by Ben Smith
Hi all,
Two questions:
1) Is there an RPM of Debmirror that works on Fedora?
2) Is anybody interested in one?
That is, to enable one to host a (partial) Debian mirror on Fedora.

Is Fedora Core slower than RH 9 ?
by R. S. Patil
Dear Friends,
I have Both RH 9 and Fedora 3 with me.
I tried First RH 9 on a PII M/C with 128 MB RAM.
I Ran Test application using FB 1.5 and D5 Client Appplication
The longest Procedure in that application was test Case
It took 15 Min on RH 9.
On same M/C I installed FC3 and same application setup was done.
same Test procedure was run on new config,
It took 55/60 Mins.
I am surprised since My expectation was it should take either less or
similar time.
Can some body tell me what might have gone wrong ?
Are there any config issues with FC3 ?
Thanks
