mairix + Fedora = mmap errors
by Andre Costa
Hi,
anyone tried using mairix [http://www.rc0.org.uk/mairix] with Fedora?
Here I get tons of mmap() errors:
~ mairix -p
[...]
mmap: Illegal seek
Skipping...
mmap: Illegal seek
Skipping...
mmap: Illegal seek
Skipping...
[...]
At the end, a database is created, but it doesn't seem to contain
anything useful:
ls -l mairix_database
-rw------- 1 costa users 195142 Dec 1 22:29 mairix_database
~ mairix acosta
mmap: Success
I compiled mairix directly from the 0.11 tarball with rpmbuild -ta.
TIA
Andre

Help with reporting broken install
by John Wendel
I've installed Fedora on 3 boxes; 2 "everything" installs that worked
perfectly and 1"custom" install that is broken.
Problems on the "broken" box:
[1] The redhat admin tools don't run.
The programs are there, but they don't start. When run from the GUI
(both gnome and kde), nothing shows up. When run from the command
line, I get some text complaining about "xcdroast".
I'm not sure what other programs might not work. All the stuff I
normally use seems to work fine, but I don't have a
warm-fuzzy-feeling about the system.
[2] The RPM db is hosed.
In an attempt to fix the admin tools, I tried to reinstall them. First
I did "rpm -e <tool-name>", which told me that <tool-name> was not
installed. So I mounted the CD, and did "rpm -i <tool-name>", which
told me that <tool-name> was already installed.
"rpm --rebuilddb" didn't fix the problem.
[3] Yum installs don't work.
I assume that this is caused by the broken RPM db. I tried "yum
install k3b", which resulted in trying to download hundreds of files
to satisfy the dependencies. I'm sure that these files were already
installed. I built k3b from the tarball and it works fine.
I assume the next thing to do is to reinstall Fedora. But before I do,
is these any information that I could collect and file with a
Bugzilla report? I'm not sure what would be useful to someone looking
at this problem.
Regards,
John

I found drivers at lexmark.com for the Z35.

I have the same printer but that driver will not work. Every time that I
try to print to using, as per Lexmarks instructions to print a text
file:
lpr -Plexmarkz35 Readme.txt
I get this message back and does not print:

gnome-theme-manager fails
by Jonathan Ryshpan
Gnome-theme-manager fails, producing the error message:
No themes could be found on your system. This probably
means that your "Theme Preferences" dialog was improperly
installed, or you haven't installed the "gnome-themes"
package.
Gnome-themes is installed on my system.
When invoked from a gnome terminal, there are no screen messages. When
invoked from a KDE terminal, this message appears on the invoking
terminal:
Window manager warning: Failed to read theme from file
/usr/share/themes/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml:
Failed to open file
'/usr/share/themes/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml':
No such file or directory.
The system is an upgrade to Fedora of a very much upgraded system,
used mostly under KDE. In a similar system with a fresh installation,
gnome-theme-manager works fine.
Any ideas about what's happening or how to fix it?
NB: I must say that the error message is rather mysterious. I am a very
experienced computer experience (about 40 years), though not with gnome.
It's not at all clear what the "Theme Preferences" dialog is -- is it a
program, a package, a file, a directory, or whatever?
The message might hint how the installation is improper. Is something
missing or is something wrongly configured. If wrongly configured, how?
What could be done to fix the problem?
Many Thanks:

Hi,
I installed Fedora Core 1 and am having a problem with my display. It
appears clear, but when I move my mouse over different objects, they
become garbled. I have a Matrox Productiva G100. Here's my X config

Thanks....Paul

Hi all,
Is there any location on WWW where from I can download additional
software for Core 1 without installation of apt or something similar ?
Just click and download. Since I am on slow dial-up this would be very

What's included in Fedora?
by John Lagrue
Guys
Before I go ahead and upgrade from RH9 to Fedora, can anyone tell me if
Fedora includes these two invaluable tools.
Shorewall? And if not, will Shorewall run on it without too many
hassles?
Webmin? And if not will it too run?
Cheers

Fw: Using ATA Raid HPT370A controller.
by Dmitri Gofmekler
Hi!
I have a small trouble using Adaptec 1200A controller.
I have successful installation with RedHat 7.3 and same card, now tried this
(compiled driver, modules.conf, recreate initrd, rewrite grub.conf) with
Fedora and the system hangs during startup. Is there any binary drivers or
success stories about hpt37x2 driver? Or maybe Fedora can be installed using
ataraid / hptraid modules?
And maybe someone knows how to make Fedora driver disk for controller?
Dmitri.

Re: Problem with CUPS
by Hesty P
You get that error if you aren't using cups -- in
which case there
isn't a lot of point running the cups init script.
What does '/usr/sbin/alternatives --display print' say
as the very
first two lines of the output?
Tim.
Thanks, I've found out that those are the binaries
installed by Samsung's setup script. Once I remove all
those and use stock gdi driver, my new laser printer
works like a charm, albeit with minimal features
provided by the gdi driver.

SiS video Card roblem with FC1
by Martin Marques
I'm having a really hard time with various Linuxs (RedHat from 5.2 up to 9,
and now FC1) and a SiS 530 Video Card (same problem with a 630).
The problem is that on the X I get a screen with interferences (something like
vertical snowy lines).
I tried changing lots of settings in the XF86Config file (SWCursor, NOAccel,
different refresh rates for the monitor) with no luck at all.
What can I do to have a decent GUI?
