Does anyone know how to set up Thunderbird so a browser opens when you
click on a link or is this just a bug?

ldap+samba+autofs
by Jesse Keating
So, I'm trying to set up a system here at work that uses LDAP for
central user auth, for both posix (nss_ldap) users, and for samba
users. For even more fun, I plan on automounting the user's home dirs
(and possibly other shares). These automounts will be based on the
login name and the password supplied at login time. I've found a tool
named pam_mount, that is supposed to take the password given at login
time and re-apply it later for mounting volumes. The problem is that
the documentation is extremely sparse, and I've no clue whether or not
it works with nss_ldap.
Do any of you fine folks know of a way that I can have a user's home dir
mounted at login time, based upon their login name and the password
they provided at login time? I'm trying to get around the insecurities
of NFS and host-based spoofs, by requiring that extra login before you
get the file system. Please don't suggest NIS(+) or NFS, unless you
have a way of securing NFS so that it requires a password as well as a
correct host, but can be done at login time, using LDAP user/pass.
TIA!

How to change language
by Henrik Magnusson
Hi!
I've upgraded from RH9 (a working installation) to FC1 (a non working installation). All my troubles seem to end up with that FC1 assumes UTF-8. Since the support for swedish characters seem to be rather bad, and the following applications have had serious issues with this.
Samba
Pine
Vi
the list could go on. Now I would like to know what files I should change to make it possible for the applications to allow the swedish characters ISO-8859-1, but still present all errormessages in english.

Lexmark Z35 Driver
by David LeSage
Hello,
Does anyone know what has happened to the drivers for the Lexmark Z35
printer? I recently bought one specifically because Lexmark appeared to
support Linux, proclaiming on the box that it was supported by Red Hat 7.1
onwards and Mandrake 8.0. Unfortunately,, whilst the Lexmark Z31 and Z32
have drivers available in Red Hat 8.0, 9.0 and Fedora Core 1, there is no
support for the Z35 and I cannot find a driver on the 'Net. Can anyone
assist?

smaller system
by Vano Beridze
Hello
I have one question
Why Fedora installer with everything turned off installs the following
package:
reiserfs-utils
or
hesiod
or
....
When I turn off everything I need a system that is minimal (knows how to
boot and find devices)
This is the freedom of Gentoo.
I would be very happy to apply this word to Fedora in this situation.
Of course I can remove all the unnecessary packages but why should I
bother myself
finding those packages?
I would be glad to hear your comments about that.
Maybe in Fedora Core 2
we will have the ability to install truely minimal system.
Thank you

NFS performance..
by WipeOut
Hi,
I am looking at setting up a NAS trype server to provide a shared
storage facility to my other servers..
So to connect from the Servers to the NAS box I will be using either NFS
or Samba and seeing that it will be a linux only environment I figured
NFS would probably be the way to go..
but..
From the tests I have done this morning it would seem that Samba is far
faster (3x) than NFS in terms of write speed and about the same in terms
of read speed.. I know that Samba probably comes fairly well optimised
out of the box but I think NFS could probably do with some tuning..
I have tried mounting with rsize=8192,wsize=8192 but this didn't make
any difference..
Anyone got any ideas or links to good NFS tuning sites.. (the how-to on
nfs.sourceforge.net didn't help me much)

by Hank Maxwell

or nautilus instead of 1 process of each appearing several more like 3-4
of each would appear and some apps would not shutdown either (yahoo
messenger), i can't think of any tweak in the kernel that would cause
these problems maybe someone else can??

Fedora, Kernel Version
by TongKe Xue
Hello,
I'm thinking of trying out Fedora 1, but my I've only been able to
get my current AGP card to be recognized on 2.6.0-test9 (haven't
tried the later versions yet). I ran into trouble trying to get
2.6.0-testX on RedHat 9 ... does anyone know if Fedora has the
support for the 2.6.0-testX kernel series?
Thanks,

atheros madwifi
by Shashi Bhusan Patra
Hi guys,
I had my wireless pcmcia card (atheros chipset) working fine with the
madwifi driver from sourceforge on RH7.3 (2.4.22 vanilla kernel)
I switched to FC1, the driver compiled ok, but *make install* failed with :
*/sbin/depmod -ae
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.22/net/ath_pci.o
depmod: ath_hal_mhz2ieee
depmod: ath_hal_init_channels
depmod: _ath_hal_attach
depmod: ath_hal_probe
depmod: ath_hal_detach
depmod: ath_hal_computetxtime
*I tried this both on the stock FC1 kernel, and on the vanilla 2.4.22
kernel from kernel.org. and got the same results.
Thanks in advance,
SBP.
