Doesn't seem to work here. I uncomment that line, plug in the scanner
and open a terminal. As root I type 'sane-find-scanner' and this is the
result:
-----
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different,
make sure that you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI
adapter.
# No USB scanners found. If you expected something different,
make sure that you have loaded a driver for your USB host
controller and have installed a kernel scanner module.
# Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary
ports can't be detected by this program.
-----
Is the FB320P a parallel port scanner? If so, how do you get sane to
find it?

installing packages omitted from initial install
by Don
I installed FC1 as a text install, via ftp. I thought I selected
"install everything", but now I go to install a program and it says no
compiler is available etc.
I can ssh to the machine and use the cli (root as required), but I don't
know what commands to use to get it to install more things.
I know the ftp site (it's one of my servers) so that's not a problem...
but what I'd really like is if I can just install everything that's
missing....
Any suggestions for how to do that via cli?
Thanks,
Don

Mplayer plugin for Mozilla
by Antonio Montagnani
It seems that the only plugin working with latest Mplayer from freshrpms
is the one that you may downoad at
http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/ i.e:
mplayerplug-in 1.0pre2-1.9
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you install from another repository (for example from
http://dag.wieers.com/packages/mozilla-mplayer/ it doesn't work
mozilla-mplayer-0.95-1.rhfc1.test.i386.rpm is the file in such a repository.

Hope that can help to save some time in setting a box replacing windows media players.

CUPS won't start
by Jacob Shreffler
When I attempt to print with lpr I get the following error:
$lpr file
lpr: error - scheduler not responding!
I cannot print a test page from redhat-config-printer, I receive this
error from it:
lpr: unable to print file: server-error-service-unavailable
I look for a CUPS process:
$ps ax | grep cup
2408 ? S 0:00 eggcups --sm-config-prefix /eggcups-s2No7w/
--sm-client-id 117f000001000105035881100000046260004 --screen 0
3762 pts/0 S 0:00 grep cup
It appears that I don't have cupsd running, so I try to start the CUPS
service:
# /etc/init.d/cups start
cupsd: Child exited with status 99!
cups: started scheduler. [ OK ]
cupsd is still not a process! An error like this repeatedly appears in
/var/log/cups/error_log:
E [01/Dec/2003:17:50:36 -0500] StartListening: Unable to bind socket -
Cannot assign requested address.
'nmap localhost' does not show port 631 (ipp) to be open.
What have I overlooked? Do I need port 631 open to print? Do I need
cupsd? Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance,
jshreffl

/usr/bin/redhat-control-network doesn work for regular users
by Haroldo Dijigov
Hi,
I have a problem in my fedora 1.0 instalation. After installed it I created
my dsl connection to my provider and work fine for root. But After created a
regular user and as root click on "Allow all users to enable and disable
this device" I should be able to have control over this device as regular
user. But the fact is that when I start /usr/bin/redhat-control-network it
didn show anything. To connect to internet I need to open a terminal and
call for /usr/bin/redhat-control-network as root. It appears that
/usr/bin/redhat-control-network isin't working properly for regular users.
In RH9 it worked fine.
My network card is a RTL 8139 model.
I also downloaded all updates and nothing changes.
Does anybody see that before ?
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Haroldo.
