Flash plugin delays page load
by Bart Szyszka
Hi,
I have Fedora Core 1 and installed the RPM for the Flash plugin that's
available at:
http://macromedia.rediris.es/site_ri.html
My problem is that whenever I try to open a site that has a Flash
animation, before the browser (Epiphany and Mozilla) loads the page,
there's a few seconds' delay. Sometimes it's 3 seconds, sometimes it's
over 10, which is making it really difficult to browse websites
considering the number of them that now use Flash-based ads.
Just to make it clear, if I have a page already loaded in the browser
(one with or without Flash) and I type say salon.com , the browser will
still display that existing page during the entire delay until it
switches over. And during the delay, the scrollbars won't work, the
throbber doesn't spin, the toolbar buttons don't popup on rollover, and
basically the program is totally frozen during that time period.
Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem? I'm on a laptop
with an nVidia GeForce2Go graphics card, using the latest driver for it,
but I wouldn't think that'd be the problem? I've used previous versions
of Red Hat and this is the first time I've experienced something like
this, though normally I've used the plugin directly from a tar.gz from
Macromedia.com instead of needing to install it with an RPM so I don't
know.

bind update and kernel update?
by fedora
last week there was a BIND vulnerability fix. I figured the fixes for RH
should at least have been released already but they are not. Nor have I
found mention in Fedoras lists. For now Ive compiled from sources until
fixed rpms are available.
Earlier today debian released updated kernel fixes that fix a user-space
vulnerability in the kernel. Whats wierd is this was already noted and
fixed in the 2.4.23 kernel (found in september). The current kernel does
not appear to have this patch that addresses the do_brk() function in
mmpap.c (although theres arguments on some lists as to whether the
2.4.18-mmap-sem-debug.patch addressed this in the past).
Ive already unsubscribed from the RH lists and moved to this one but I
know some RH people help out alot here.
Is there any information on when these patches will be coming out?
Also, since the kernel security issue was fixed in the 2.4.23 kernel in
september was there a reason for it not being already backported already?
Thanks,
Greg

less and LESSCHARSET=latin1 and scandinavian chars are &
by Jani Ollikainen
Hi,
Ok, what have you done this time with charsets..
man less:
-Kcharset
Causes less to use this charset instead of a charset defined in
the JLESSCHARSET or LESSCHARSET environment variable.
($:~) echo "åöä hi mom" >moreisless
($:~) less moreisless
&&& hi mom
($:~) more moreisless
åöä hi mom
So how to fix this?

Hmm... is the fix done on the 2.4.23 kernel already..

funny powersave kind of thing with Fedora
by Scott Garrison
I'm running FC 1 on an old IBM Aptiva (AMD K6). Runs great, including
VNC now, etc.
I must've done something to cause the following problem, but can't seem
to resolve it myself (have turned off apmd, doesn't fix it):
After 30 minutes of inactivity, my system goes into some kind of
powersave mode. The monitor goes into standby, and the CPU does a
funny 'half shutdown' where the powerlight blinks on and off, the fans
are still running, but the system is unresponsive at the console or
remotely (e.g. via ssh).
When I press the power switch, it comes back to life--monitor comes
back on, etc.. I'm taking this system to be hosted at Ohio State this
weekend, so naturally, I need it not to go into this weird mode on me
every 30 minutes (me sitting at my VNC and ssh client in Michigan).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

Boot configuration
by Matthew Saltzman
I have a Dell Latitude C640 laptop that I want to install Fedora on. The
disk contains a partition with diagnostics, and I have (for the moment)
included a suspend-to-disk (S2D) partion for APM suspends. I also want to
leave a partition for Win2k (still necessary to have it in order to get
support from Dell). That takes up three of the four primary partitions.
The last is my extended partition. So I have some special requirements
for GRUB.
Is it possible to bave the /boot partition be a logical partition?
In order for S2D to work, GRUB cannot be in the MBR. Can GRUB be
installed in the boot record for the extended partition or in the boot
record for a logical partition?
TIA.

Since Alan Cox is busy with some _other_ stuffs, and the last -ac series was
the 2.4.22-ac4, and I wanted the New "Laptop_mode" I did some hacking of my
own.
So.. Here's the patch for cpufreq (taken from a site in
http://ftp.linuk.org.uk) against the vanilla 2.4.23 kernel (taken from
http://kernel.org) (why is it called vanilla.. why can't it be
rum-&-raisin?? yumm)
I've tested it on my Laptop and CPUFreq compiled in without any problems and
I'm using it. (NO extensive testing. I just made the patch like yesterday
_night_. It was a long night...)
So.. I guess now, I have the best of both...CPUfreq and Laptop_mode
support.. Yeh!!!
(I'm Very proud of myself my very 1st patch and my very 1st contribution to
the Linux community.. So.. let me boast it out a bit okay???)
if anyone wants this as an attachment.. Drop me a email

Hi all
I'm trying to burn cds on my HP 9100 CD-RW (IDE), but I don't know why it
doesn't work, in my lilo.conf i have: append="hdd=ide-scsi" (the hdd is the
CD-RW), when I run cdrecord -scanbus, I get:
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a19 (i686-redhat-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003 Jörg
Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI
driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are
root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
I have the /dev/pg*
Is missing something?
thanks in advance
David
