How to force removal of protected package?
by Jeffrey Walton
Hi Everyone,
I had a dnf-system-upgrade go sideways. It was due, in part, due to a
Python3 install in /usr/local. The other part had to do with the
machine going to sleep while I was ssh'd into the machine. I now want
to get rid of GNOME and use the machine from the command line.

$ sudo dnf remove gnome*
Error:
Problem: The operation would result in removing the following protected package

I've read the dnf(8) man page, but I don't see how to remove a
protected package.
How do I force the removal of a protected package?
Thanks in advance.

redhat-lsb-submod-security ???
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I am in the process of purging all the fc38 packages
from my fc39 install.
What is "redhat-lsb-submod-security"?
And do I need it on fc39? No other package is
dependent on it.
Many thanks,

thunderbird forgets location in a folder
by fedora@eyal.emu.id.au
fc38
tb 115.4.1
I sort my mail into many folders, using message filters.
When I select a folder, the list of messages is focused somewhere in the past, nowhere near the last item I opened (normally the latest).
I have to scroll down to bring the message into view, and it is usually highlighted (so TB knows but hides it).
I want the last message to be selected (shown in the right message body pane) when I open a folder.

clock applet not showing weather
by Tim
Lately, across several different Linux installs the MATE's clock applet
that shows the time and date on the title bar has been unable to show
the local weather.
Looking in the journal I see lots of this, which I presume is related:
clock-applet[9632]: Failed to get METAR data: 308 Permanent Redirect.
It still does that even if I switch off the options to show temperature
and weather. Something I consider quite odd.
Does anybody else see the same thing?
Not knowing the URL that the thing uses, I can't manually have a look
at it to see what's happening.

Since I run kde, the display manager is actually sddm, and systemctl
gives very interesting info. Some research shows that a package is
missing, namely plasma-workspace-x11. Installing it cures things. The
problem actually arose in Fedora 38 (I have no idea how.); I upgraded to
Fedora 39 to see if this would cure the problem, but since plasma-
workspace-x11 was missing from 38, it stayed missing in 39.

Can't log in to graphical workstation
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I am not able to log in as a graphical user on one of my workstations.
The login screen works normally, except that:
* The "Session" box is empty
* The "Layout" box reads "??zz" (?? is blue)
When I type my password and hit return, nothing happens.
I can run a terminal session (CTRL+ALT F2) OK, but $startx fails.
This started to happen on Fedora 38. I (foolishly) upgraded to Fedora
39, which only made things worse: I can no longer log in to the machine
remotely via ssh. Currently running Fedora 39 with all upgrades
installed.
Any ideas on what's going on or how to investigate?
