boot menu not displayed
by Amadeus WM
In Fedora 33 I noticed the boot menu is not being displayed anymore, so
obviously I have no way of selecting which kernel / os to boot.
On the machine where this is happening F33 is the only OS I have, no dual
boot, nothing, so it hasn't been a big issue so far, but I'd like to have
this feature.
I don't know if this has been like that since I installed F33, or it
happened some time later (when I installed the nvidia drivers maybe?).
For what it's worth, I'm not running gdm, I boot directly to level 3
(multiuser).
Do I need to enable the boot menu somehow, and how?
Thanks!

Lutris Currently Uninstallable
by Christopher Ross
For days I have been getting the error "nothing provides
python3.8dist(python-magic)" when attempting a DNF update, and from
googling it seems I'm not alone in that. I have now uninstalled lutris
(the culprit) so that the update can proceed. Where should I look for
news on when this might be fixed?
root@snoopy 10:30:04 ~ # dnf install lutris
Last metadata expiration check: 3:53:50 ago on Thu 03 Dec 2020 06:37:59 GMT.
Error:
Problem: cannot install the best candidate for the job
- nothing provides python3.8dist(python-magic) needed by
lutris-0.5.8-1.fc32.x86_64
(try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest'
to use not only best candidate packages)
Many thanks,

Printing hell...
by Richard Shaw
I've had my HP ENVY Photo 7800 series printer working fine for some time
and then I got stupid.
While looking for a BIOS update for my HP ENVY laptop I noticed there was a
new firmware for my printer and went ahead and installed it. Since then
I've been completely unable to print but I'm not sure 100% of it is the
printer's fault.
When I try to add the printer in gnome settings after removing everything I
get very weird behavior.
First is say "Unable to add printer" or something to that effect, once I
click through that it says it needs additional drivers.
When I click Ok it takes me to hplip in Gnome Software which is ALREADY
INSTALLED.
And then gnome-controler-center partially crashes and has to be closed but
not forced to quit.
I've since moved on to trying to add the printer directly through the CUPS
web interface. It discoveres the printer via both ipps and dnsnd. Sometimes
it autodetects the printer type and other times I have to manually select
it.
I've tried both driverless, hpcups, and hpijs without success, however, I
think that's because the driver is not the problem.
The message I always get when trying to print anything, regardless of
connection method, is:
First:
"Processing page 1..."
And then:
"Unable to locate printer "HP9C7BEF8B3751.local"."
Well it could certainly locate it to install the printer but somehow it
can't find it afterwards?!?
journalctl -u cups has been utterly useless.
Avahi seems to be working as avahi-browse shows a bajillion entries for the
printer.
Ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

Eliminating i686
by Beartooth
I ran into a lot of trouble with one of my system upgrades from
F32 to F33, mainly iiuc due to the presence of a superfluous i686 among
all my .x86_64s. Just now while doing an ordinary F33 upgrade, I noticed
pcre2-10.36-1.fc33.i686. I tried dnf remove, and it proposed to remove
nearly ninety other items. I noticed that all of them also ended
in .i686; so I told it to go ahead.
Was this a real dumb-cluck trick, or should I do the like on my
other machines?

I wonder if the "update" installed a new duplicate conf file, which is
not referenced *while printing*, but is referenced through cups when you
add the printer.
A global search from various places (/usr, /etc/, /opt, /home/$user,
/root) for key word segments in a file name might disclose the duplicates:
find -H -L . -type f -iname "*search-term*"
( the *xxx* catches substring matches in a filename).

For those occasions, I highly recommend a cheap Chromebook.
It has saved my *** numerous times.
If you live near a FedEx Office Store, I highly recommend their service
called "print and go."
I have been using Linux for three years and I still struggle with printing.

Search engines -
by Bob Goodwin
I think that Google has become nearly useless. If my search term
includes a word that triggers their advertising I am overwhelmed with
responses that have little relationship to my query, it amounts to being
overwhelmed with commercials.
I understand that they are trying to accumulate viewings for their
advertisers but it has become a waste of my time. Can anyone suggest an
alternative?

Hello,
I received this request:
If you might be able to grab a screenshot of both the developer console and the network tab from your Linux machine
Do you understand the request?
I can take screenshots, but of what?
Thanks
