off-topic SMTP headers query
by Tim
Hi,
Just wondering if anybody can answer a question about email headers
from SMTP servers:
In a recent scam/spam, this is the first header line above the message
content (i.e. it *should* be the first system the mail went through in
the chain, in the normal way SMTP always worked).
Received: from [144.217.20.147] (ip147.ip-144-217-20.net [144.217.20.147])
by vEdge-AC1.cox.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C3705179FEE;

As far as I know, that IP can't be faked (it exists, the host names and
IP resolve in both directions, and it's a fair bet that the message did
go through it). Whois queries say it belongs to OVH Hosting, who are
prolific supporters of spamming.
But is that cox.com domain name something that's user-configurable text
that the spammer could fill in, or is that filled in by software out of
spammer's control?
As a FQDN it doesn't resolve (for me), and the TLD cox.com resolves to
completely different IPs.

FYI: Helper tool "lockdev-redirect" for redirecting /var/lock access
by Manuel Reimer
Hello,
I thought maybe some people here may be interested in a tool that I
primarily developed for my studies where I have to use MATLAB and
Simulink to program an Arduino board. Trying to access the Arduino
serial port caused me trouble because of missing write access to /var/lock.
Of course it would have been easier to screw up my system security by
blindly allowing access to a directory where my distributor decided that
users should not write to. Instead of doing this, I decided to take this
opportunity to learn something about LD_PRELOAD to redirect /var/lock
access to a (newly created) directory below $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR and
fine-tuned until MATLAB was happy and finally connected to my Arduino
without actual write access to /var/lock.
What it does is overriding glibc functions that are commonly used for
device locking mechanisms. If the accessed path is in a list of known
lock file paths, then the path is rewritten to point to a directory
below $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR before forwarding the call to the actual glibc
function and the return value back to the caller.
For development, I used "rxtx" (Java library) and "liblockdev" (Debian
device locking library) first. They are also included in my repo for
testing after build. The MATLAB part (that I actually wanted to solve)
was way more difficult as I don't know how device locking is implemented
there. I hoped that making open source libraries work, first, may cover
everything MATLAB uses, but it didn't. This required many hours of trial
and error with adding random additional glibc function overrides until I
finally catched the right ones and then removing unneeded overrides
again as I didn't want to mess with unnecessarily many glibc functions.
This also means that I probably didn't catch them all and there may
still be issues there.
If you are interested in trying out my tool, you can find it here:

Create Fedora Live Image with all your custom settings
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
I use live environments for taking and restoring my root snapshots.
But everytime, I boot into a live environment I have to turn off the
bluetooth, set tap to click for my touchpad and adjust the terminal
fonts, etc.
It is way too repetitive, and I want to know if there is any way I can
turn an installation into a live image that I can boot from.
For example, I open a VM and make all my changes, and then use that as
my live image.
I have gone through the tutorials for creating live images, but they
all create the image from pre-defined kickstart files without any
changes to it.
Any way I can turn my installation into a live image ?

Fedora & VMware on a mac - using the cisco vpn connection of the
host, is it possible?
by S Bob
Hi;
I have a contract with a client and they have sent me a mac (ugh).
<rant>
I thought it would be ok since I mostly spend my time at the command
line but the mac OS is driving me crazy. I hate this thing more with
every passing day, it's like using a preschool toy to do real work. The
mac interface is the worst pain I've had to endure in a long time.
Literally the only good thing I can say about it is that it's not
windows. Even simple tasks like getting it to use a second monitor with
the laptop lid closed take way more time than it should and usually end
in frustration and a t least one reboot.
</rant>
So... they will let me run VMware and I have installed Fedora 30 in a
VM. However much of the content I need to access such as mail, internal
company web pages, etc are all accessed via a cisco VPN and a usb key I
use to log in. Is there any way for me to fire up my Fedora VM and have
all of it's access just 'pass through' to the host, including using the
cisco vpn?
Thanks in advance

livecd-creator is not able to find Kickstart which actually exists
by Sreyan Chakravarty
Hi,
I am playing around with creating my own live image, and I have come
across a rather annoying problem in the livecd-creator script.
When I do:
livecd-creator --verbose --config=/home/sreyan/kde-flattened.ks
--fslabel=Fedora Custom --cache=/home/sreyan/cache/live/
It errors out with :
Kickstart file must be provided
This makes no sense, since the Kickstart file is where is it is supposed to be:
[root@localhost sreyan]# ll
total 56
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 12303 Dec 22 01:49 kde-flattened.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 1382 Dec 22 01:49 fedora-kde-common.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 82 Dec 22 01:42 fedora-kde-minimization.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 10118 Dec 22 01:47 fedora-live-base.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 2375 Dec 22 01:40 fedora-live-kde-base.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 425 Dec 22 01:39 fedora-live-kde.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 235 Dec 22 01:41 fedora-live-minimization.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 291 Dec 22 01:48 fedora-repo.ks
-rw-rw-r--. 1 sreyan sreyan 196 Dec 22 01:48 fedora-repo-rawhide.ks
Running as root makes no difference, also I have SELinux disabled for
the time being so I am sure it's not a security issue.
Am I doing anything wrong ?
I cannot make sense of what's happening.

by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
What is the library that contains the call for the time / date?
And what is the call's name?
