radiotray and gstreamer plugins
by Jon LaBadie
The current thread on "listening to online broadcasts"
stimulated me to ask about problems with the one I
like, "radiotray".
A number of stations I try to listen to, including some
preconfigured ones, fail with a list of procedures from
gstreamer that suggest a plugin is missing. But it
does not say which. As far as I can tell I have just
about every gstreamer plugin installed and see no way
to determine what may be missing.
Scouring the net comes up with lots of reports of
similar error listings, but no "solution" has worked
in my environment.
Here is a sample listing:
gstdecodebin2.c (3576)
gst_decode_bin_expose():
GstPlayBin2:player
GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin9
GstDecodeBin2:decodebin29:
I have the same problem on Fedora 22 and 24.

Setting my account up for auto login
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I'm trying to use KDE System-Settings->Account-Details->User-Manager, which
seems to provide the function that I need; but it doesn't seem to work; it
appears to allow creating accounts, but nothing happens, and doesn't seem to
allow editing accounts at all. If it has to be run as root, how can I start a
GUI session as root?
What am I missing?
Thanks - jon

ssh again..
by bruce
Hey... (again)
Still trying to get my mind around how to solve this. Someone mentioned ssh
forwarding, but I've not gotten it to work.
Say I have 5 boxes on my network,
box1
box2
box3
box4
box5
Each box has a generic user - user1, with limited perms/access
On my local box, i create a pub/private ssh key. I copy the pub key to each
box..
From my local box, I can then ssh -using the priv/pub key into box1.
From box1, can I then hop/ssh over to box2, using the pub key for the user1
that I created/installed?
I'm trying to figure out how I can hop between boxes as needed without
having to have lots of pub/private keys ...
What do I need to add to the local box, or to box1 / box2 to permit me to
hop from box1 to box2 without having to add a key from/between box1 and
box2?
if ssh forwarding is the soln, what has to be added to which files, on
which boxes?
Thoughts/comments..
Thanks

F21: Thunderbird insists on calling Fedora list messages junk!
by William Mattison
Good afternoon,
Most messages received from this fedora list are labelled junk by
Thunderbird. This is even though I whitelisted "From" =
"users-request(a)lists.fedoraproject.org". Actually, I have this problem
both in my Fedora-21 and my windows-7 systems. Any ideas? Surely
messages from this list are not junk!
thanks,
Bill.

parallel of grub2-mkconfig in older fedora release which has grub and
not grub2
by Kevin Wilson
Hello,
On a machine with Fedora 23 grub2, I use "grub2-mkconfig -o
/boot/grub2/grub.cfg" in order to update
/boot/grub2/grub.cfg if there are changes in /etc/default/grub.
Running this command also
sees to it that if there are other installations of Linux on the
machine, and if the respective partitions are mounted,
then if there are no entries in the /boot/grub2/grub.cfg, then entries
for these other installations of Linux are added.
I have a machine which have Fedora 22 and windows. I installed
CentOs 6.8 on this machine. After installation, I do not see the F22
in the /boot/grub/grub.conf.
I do see the windows installation in /boot/grub/grub.conf.
On Cetnos 6.8, "grub" is the bootloader, not "grub2":
rpm -qa | grep grub
grub
grubby
What should I rub to add the Fedora 22 entries to /boot/grub/grub.conf?

Kevin

basic sudo/sodoers question
by bruce
Hi.
I have two (2) users cat - dog
user cat has access to all files in /cat, and the ability to run the apps
(*.php)
i want to allow user dog to be able to run as user cat, and therefore run
the *.php in /cat
As far as I can tell, this is a sudo/sudoers issue, where I should be able
to set up a user/group to run the apps with no passwd...
so... I jumped into visudo, made the change to the sudo/sudoer file (not
sure what the file is actually called!).
the change I made
cat ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /cat/*.*
I then did a #su dog
whoami -- dog
and as user dog...
sudo -u cat /cat/aa.php
and got a passwd prompt for dog....
so what did I miss/screw up....
Thanks...

going to be looking for advice on getting fedora 24 running on ASUS
G752VL-DH71
by Robert P. J. Day
a while back, i asked about some issues getting a fully functioning
fedora 23 running on my ASUS G752VL-DH71 gaming laptop (i don't
actually do any gaming, i just wanted the horsepower for a build
machine):
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.o...
i'm about to do a fresh install of fedora 24 on the same machine, and
i still have some outstanding issues that are probably solvable on the
current f23 that, if i can fix now, the same solution will almost
certainly still hold for f24.
so here are some questions if anyone has off-the-cuff solutions:
1) how do i get the backlit keyboard to, you know, backlight? i
normally plug in a USB keyboard and, using "xset led", i can get
*that* keyboard backlight on. but i have no idea how to get the
laptop's own keyboard backlit.
2) this laptop has a displayport connector -- is that port fully
supported in fedora 24?
3) this thing also has a USB-C thunderbolt port, of which i know
nothing; what sort of support can i expect for that? (not even sure
what i would use it for yet.)
4) just got a deal on a samsung v-nand 950 pro SSD:
http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/950pro...
haven't had time to plug it in yet, can anyone confirm that that is
supported? i was *assured* by the dude at frys electronics that it
would work.
5) oh, and i was about to complain that the cooling fans on this thing
are always on full blast even when i'm not doing anything but,
suddenly, they're quiet. i'm kind of shocked, did proper thermal
support suddenly come with the latest "dnf update" kernel? i'm
deliriously happy about that, i just wasn't expecting it.
oh, i'm reading the online manual here:
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/1076799/Asus-G752v.html
so if anyone else is running f24 on one of the asus gaming laptops and
wants to swap config/setup stories, i'm all ears.

Request for help! Adding application reviews in GNOME Software for a
better F25
by Richard Hughes
First, apologies if this email is slightly off topic, I figured you
all would be the best people to ask for help.
GNOME Software in F24 allows people to write an end-user review of
specific apps so other users can better choose the correct application
to install. So far we've had loads of great reviews from hundreds of
people, but the majority are just in English, en_GB, en_US and en_IN
etc. A lot of users in other locales are writing reviews in English
too.
For F25 we're planning to show the "star rating" of each application
more prominently in the search results, and this requires good high
quality data from end users like yourselves. This star rating is made
up from end-users reviews, and although we've got over 400 reviews
already since the release of F24 a lot of these are for popular
applications like the GIMP and a huge number of applications are
missing ratings data. This is going to make the UI in F25 look
non-awesome, so I'm asking for your help.
If you've got a spare minute or two, I'd really appreciate it if you
could write as many reviews as you can in your native language for
apps you either love or hate, perhaps concentrating first on the
applications we install by default, or the applications we've chosen
to be "featured" in the various categories. Even having a couple of
reviews in each language for just the core apps would be awesome and
would look great in the F25 release notes.
Thanks,
Richard

Fedora 24 encountered issues with Asus UX305CA (-FB104T)
by Mika Rummukainen
After looking for quite a while for suitable Ultrabook to run Linux, I decided to go with Asus UX305CA.
My first attempt included installing latest Fedora (24), however, this was not without problems.
The following issues were encountered so far:
1. LIVE USB:
- Booting from Live USB works fine, except the touchpad did not work.
- Workaround: if I connected USB mouse before booting to live USB, then *both* USB mouse and touchpad did work
2. Default F24 WS (immediately after installation)
- touchpad started working also without mouse
3. F24 WS with the latest updates as of 2016-07-10 (and with Kernel 4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64 #1 SMP):
Issue 1: Fedora boot hangs (only power off helps) after selecting kernel 4.6 from grub, producing only a blank screen. Something to do with graphics mode switching?
- Workaround: hit ESC a few times immediately after choosing kernel 4.6 from grub => screen changes to text mode and shows '^[' => LUKS (graphical) password prompt appears after a while => after entering password the boot continues as usual working just fine.
- Note: tested entering password into the blank screen (i.e. without hitting esc) several times, in case the luks password prompt was there and not displayed, but the boot would not continue
Issue 2: Fedora FN+F5/F6 (brightness keys) did not work.
- Fix: edit grub default configuration + install & enable acpid
-- edit /etc/default/grub and append acpi_osi= at the end of GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUsudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfgX_DEFAULT (as in http://askubuntu.com/questions/471847/brightness-fn-key-shortcut-doesnt-w...)
-- update grub (sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg)
-- reboot
-- install and enable acpid
-- sudo dnf install acpid
-- sudo systemctl start acpid
-- sudo systemctl enable acpid
