I gave just bought an external disk to be used on machines running

steps should I follow?
Thanks in advance,

printer configuration all commandline!!
by bruce
Hi.
Looking to figure out what I've missed/left out in setting up printer
access to a network/wireless HP printer. I can access the printer from
the same box if i select print from the "gedit" app...
But I can't figure out/recall what has to be used from the command line!!!
$ lpc status
HP-Officejet-Pro-8600:
printer is on device 'socket' speed -1
queuing is enabled
printing is enabled

$ lpstat -t

printer HP-Officejet-Pro-8600 now printing HP-Officejet-Pro-8600-10.

Rank Owner Job File(s) Total Size
active ihubuse 10 child.php 1024 bytes
1st ihubuse 12 (stdin) 4096 bytes
so, if i have a test file "cat.txt", I thought the command to print was
lpr -P HP-Officejet-Pro-8600 cat.txt
but that appears to just place the file in the queue..
now, i can get the file to pring if i open the file in the gedit app,
and do a print!!
so, what the heck am i forgetting!!
thanks

Recovering files from ext2/3
by JD
Is there any other tool that can extract files from a partition that
seems to have corrupted superblocks?
I tried dumpe2fs, and fsck -b <blockNumber>
to no avail. Tried all available block numbers that are listed
when original mkfs was done, and it's output was saved.
None of the blocks seem to work - all of them have invalid magic.
When I run strings on the partition, I see many
readily recognizable strings of files that I stored there.
I understand that possibly the fs might be irretrievably corrupted,
but wanted a last ditch input from other fs gurus.

Issue with new Kernel 3.16.2??
by Michael D. Setzer II
I have machines in my classroom that were just upgrade to the 3.16.2
kernels, and after a reboot it just goes to a blank screen and has to be hard
shutdown. Nothing shows on the screen were the litte circle usually shows
with the earlier kernels?? Booting to the previous kernel works fine, so I just
used the grub2-set-default to set the default to the previous kernel?
I do have Virtual Box on the machines, so don't know if that is an issue, but
even tried reinstall the 3.16.2 kernel, but even then it did the same thing?
Didn't see any message in the message log, so looks like it didn't get that far.

perf interrupt took too long
by JD
Often, I get these messages in /var/log/messages:
[ 8308.300906] perf interrupt took too long (2501 > 2500), lowering
kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 50000
Is there a way to disable the performance monitor ?
Thanx.

Problem with kernels 3.16.2-200 and 3.16.2-201
by Michael D. Setzer II
Ran the update today, and saw the new kernels, but then had about 2/3 of
the machines have the same issue with just getting a blank screen after the
reboot and trying to load the kernel as I had seen with the 3.16.2-200 kernel.
The machines are all new Lenovo ThinkCentre systems from January, so not
clear what is going on. Had gone back to the previous 3.15.10 kernel that
work fine with all. Not sure why the 1/3 booted? Would expect all or none? I
have found that using the edit option on grub menu and modifying it would
get it to work sometimes. Sometimes just using edit and F10 with no changes
would work, sometime entering a blank line would work. Sometime removing
the rhgb or quiet would do it??
modified the /etc/default/grub and removed the rhgb quiet and used the
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
and then did a test and all 20 machines booted just fine. Have no clue as to
why that would have an effect? Didn't see any error messages, so not clear
on why 2/3rds of machine wouldn't boot after the yum update with the new
kernels.

WiFi Tx power question
by JD
# lspci | grep -i wifi
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100
dmesg | grep -i iwlwifi
[ 10.019366] iwlwifi 0000:0c:00.0: Detected Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100
AGN, REV=0x54
dmesg also shows
[ 266.827254] wlan0: Limiting TX power to 36 (36 - 0) dBm as advertised
by 00:0d:67:6a:5a:19
iwconfig wlan0
$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"attwifi"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point:
00:0D:67:6A:5A:19
Bit Rate=72.2 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=35/70 Signal level=-50 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:20 Missed beacon:0
So, reason I am asking is that I would like to increase Tx power to 30dBm
due to poor connectivity with the hotspot router.
I tried
# iwconfig wlan0 txpower 30dBm
{7917-jd@localhost}# echo $?
0
# iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"attwifi"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point:
00:0D:67:6A:5A:19
Bit Rate=72.2 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=35/70 Signal level=-50 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:20 Missed beacon:0
So, iwconfig is not setting Tx power. Not sure if this is a limitation
of the wifi card or a bug in the wifi driver or if a bug in iwconfig.
