Firefox and htm5: "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available."
by JD
At url youtube.com/html5
I request the html5 player
then I play a youtube video.
I get the message
Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats
available.
Click here to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video.
Clicking on the link, shows that only
HTMLVideoElement and WebM VP8are check marked .
The rest are red squares with a white bang in them.
Is there a way to ask youtube to select a different format of the video
other than what it chooses by default?

Can not reach some web sites
by A.J. Bonnema
Hallo,
I have been experiencing a problem with reaching some websites. Example:
I can not reach http://en.wikipedia.org.
In my network I have 2 workstations, one gaming (windows) and one work
(fedora). When accessing the same sites from the gaming machine all is
reachable. When using Fedora I cannot reach en.wikipedia.org. In all
cases I get a time out from my browsers.
What I have done to find the problem:
1. I have checked my Firefox addons by disabling them. That did not help.
2. I checked other browsers (epiphany and elinks). Neither can reach the
site.
3. I stopped the firewall and disabled it. Same result.
4. I checked that I do not have any anti-virus program running.
5. I checked google to find causes and remedies, but nothing outside
what I already did.
I am running Fedora 20 on an X86-64
Does anyone have a idea what steps to follow in order to isolate the
problem? Maybe someone has a useful link?
I have exhausted all that I know and subscribed to this mailinglist to
hopefully find some advice from people more experienced than me.
Kind regards, Guus.

Hello,
I'm installing GNUstep and Etoilé on Fedora 19.
But I need to install kqueue, and I can't seem to find a suitable package
for it.
Can anybody point me to a webpage or article with a description of how to
install this.
thanks a lot,

Firefox HTML 5 disable video and auto play
by Keith
Over the last couple of weeks I have come across several web
sites that autoplay video and audio at full blast using HTML 5. I have
disabled the options in firefox by typing about:config in the browser
then setting this three settings to false:
media.webm.enabled
media.ogg.enabled
media.wave.enabled
Hopefully the makers of Firefox will have an activate switch for all
HTML5 audio and video like they do for flash player.

No updates for a few days?
by Tom Horsley
Just curious here: The last time I got any fedora 20 updates
was the morning of Sept 15. Have there really been no updates
pushed out for 4 days? Usually it seems like there is 1 or
2 little things getting updated almost every day.
(Maybe everyone is working on fedora 21 alpha?).

case study - journalctl - where is logger output
by Balint Szigeti
hello
today I installed the rsyslog and enable it then disabled (then masked)
systemd-journal-flush, systemd-journald services. Plus I disabled
systemd-journald.socket as well.
It broke my system. After I closed the sudo session I could gain root
access plus I couldn't start any program only forks for the existed ones
(like gnome terminal).
The reboot didn't work. The box just didn't start up. :( (just remark -
systemd is not depends on itself........)
I booted into runlevel 1 (yeeeah - runlevel doesn't exist on systemd - I
wanted to say rescue.target) and redo the mask and enable everything.
I've noticed the rsyslog doesn't listen to the system logging.
I've run logger command but I don't find it in the log. I've checked the
journalctl and /var/log/messages file as well.
# logger -t AAAA hello
# journalctl |grep hello
# grep hello /var/log/messages
#
Does anyone have a clue?

checking for hexadecimal vals only in a string in bash
by Chris Kottaridis
In a bash shell script I want to see if a string has nothing but
hexadecimal values in it.
So:
A098FE or af098fe
should be true
hello
should not.
How do I check for that ?
I've been playing with
if [[ $val =~ '/^[A-Fa-f0-9]+$/' ]] ; then
echo is hex
else
echo is not hex
fi
I've tried various incantations of above and also tried using grep but
can't seem to get it just right.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

New gtk-2.0 theme in KDE
by Jonathan Ryshpan
When evolution is run under KDE the color scheme is not good; the color
of the selected message is barely different from that of unselected
messages. Various themes (available from System Settings->Application
Appearance->GTK+ Appearance) produce various color schemes. The one I
like best is Adwaita, whose color scheme I like but whose widgets are
less attractive than the ones in the default theme oxygen-gtk. So...
I copied the oxygen-gtk theme into my local folder (~/.local), where GTK
+ Appearance finds it and edited gtkrc to look like Adwaita's so far as
colors go. The key part of the edited file appears at the bottom of
this posting. I enabled it using GTK+ Appearance; unfortunately there's
no change in the color scheme. What have I done wrong?
...
# Edited by Jonathan Ryshpan on Thu Sep 18 PDT 2014
# to use the color scheme from the Adwaita theme.
# The following method is deprecated and reportedly no longer functions.
# gtk-color-scheme = "base_color:#FFFFFF\nfg_color:#000000

Where did pulseaudio profile "off" go?
by Tom Horsley
Once upon a time, when I'd run "gnome-control-center sound"
there would be a option to select profile "off" for some
sound devices, which basically meant that pulseaudio would
pretend it wasn't there, and I could use the alsa
device directly in mplayer (for example).
Sometime in the past few weeks, this seems to have stopped
working, and now the sound control center only has 1 choice
listed in the set of profiles for each device (and none of
the choices are "off").
What happened here? Where can I tell pulseaudio to leave the
SPDIF output alone?
