Anything could be the problem Mike, but maybe you suffer from this issue:
I got two raspberry's, both model B 512 version. One raspberry was
delivered in October 2012 and the other one in April 2013. The old model
boots well with rpfr18 final image. The new model did not ;-( Only the red
power LED stays ON and the green (SD card) LED only flashes very briefly.
Then nothing happened....
What seems to be the problem: New raspberry pi hardware comes with a new
memory chip. Unfortunately the boot-loader that is used in the raspberry pi
fedora (rpfr) 18 final is out dated and does not support the new memory
chip. The good news is: a new bootloader is available! All Linux brands for
raspberry use the same type of boot-loader You need to copy the three
files boot-loader files -bootcode.bin, fixup.dat and start.elf- from an
other raspberry distro to your /boot file-system For example, I use
the boot-loader files from the latest OpenElec image. You can download it
here:
http://openelec.tv/get-openelec/download/finish/10-raspberry-pi-builds/76...
There are several posts in the raspberrypi.org forum about this issue.

fedora18 and ipods/iphones
by profiles
Hello, I am new to linux and this mailing list.
After years of frustration and discomfort with Windows I finally
switched over to linux. Hallelujah.
Unfortunately I own some apple hardware. I have an iphone3 and an ipod
touch4g. I am not fond of either, but until I do the research and have
the cash to switch over to an Android I will be relying on these devices
for communication. I have an extensive contacts list on my iphone and
I'd like to import it into my evolution email client.
Does anyone have a strategy on how to access data on these mac devices?
Ideally I'd like to have my laptop read them as mass storage devices.
I have read a little about the evasi0n jailbreak that is available. Has
anyone jailbroken one of the divices listed above? Did doing so make the
divice more compatible with linux (specifically f18).
I am running kernel 3.8.11-200.fc18.x86_64

am i stupid or grep? :-)
find /data/www/ -type f -name \*.php -exec grep -l -i -n -F "<?" '{}' \;
lists any file which contains "<?" under the path /data/www/
find /data/www/ -type f -name \*.php -exec grep -l -i -n -F "<?\n" '{}' \;
is expected to find any file with "<?" followed directly by a linebreak
but that does not work and if someone finds google empty it was me :-(

fedora 18 gnome-shell core dumps before live system starts
by Bram Mertens
Hi,
I wanted to give fedora 18 a try so I created a new virtual machine in
virtualbox (host is Windows 7 enterprise 64bit).
I'm using the 32bit live CD but no matter what options I try after the
fedora 18 progress bar I get a black screen followed by the blue
background for a short while and then a window displaying "oh no
something has gone wrong please contact your system administrator".
I've checked the media (troubleshoot check media and start fedora 18)
and it reported no errors.
I tried adding xdriver=vesa and troubleshooting > start with basic
vide driver but I get the same result.
I opened one of the virtual terminals and I'm able to log on as root
so some system is running, but I'm unable to tell if this is the live
system or some anaconda or other installer shell.
/var/log/messages contains reports that gnome-shell core dumped and an
abrt trace has been created.
The only report I found that resembles what I see is
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=919669. In the abrt
report I also see "Process /usr/bin/gnome-shell was killed by signal 4
(SIGILL)" in the reason file.
Is there any other boot option I can try? Is there a way to recover
from the gnome-shell crash? Perhaps force fallback mode?
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I am trying to mount an SD/MMC card on Fedora x86_64 and I cannot see it

UEFI Notebook
by Martín Marqués
Hi all,
I have a new Acer Aspire One with Windows 8. The question that came up
was when I realized that it had UEFI instead of BIOS (which I read, is
what we're going to have to deal with from now on).
What precautions should I take with UEFI? Disable the Secure Boot?
(Read that I have to disable it to get grub to work)?
Just now I'm getting on top of this technology, but maybe some of you
guys had experience with this and can give me some hints!

How to mount a external USB drive automatically
by Anthony
I have an external USB drive that is always connected to my computer.
When I log in, it shows up on my desktop (unmounted) and all I have to
do is click on it to mount it. It mounts to
/run/media/anthony/Storage
But I want to have it mount automatically for both me (the system admin)
and any other users that login to their accounts. I'll then change
individual folder permissions for access control.
How can I make it mount automatically since it's already showing in its
unmounted state on my desktop?
Thanks,
Anthony

Fedora xfs can't open files
by Shelby, James
Greetings everyone,
I'm hoping someone else may have run in to this issue already. I have a Fedora system using xfs as the file system. About two months ago we had a power outage and the system seemed to come up fine (not sure if this could be related but making it noted). Two days ago it was noticed that some files couldn't be opened or read in one specific tree. There are other directories on this file system that work fine but files within several directories are not able to be read, they can be renamed and have the attributes changed just fine but I can't copy, md5sum or anything on the files.
I took the system down, and did a xfs_check on the file systems and it found no problems. It seems like they are in a locked state but not able to access them in any way. Has any one seen this problem before or can give me any ideas on how to troubleshoot? I did try mapfile which says it doesn't have a valid identifier for the file.
Thanks in advance
James

i do not believe this
that would mean a device in 2013 would only support TOFU and NOT allow
you to edit the quoted text? hardly no and if this is would be really
the case give it back to the seller because it is broken and can not
be repaired

Sorry about top posting. Bbm won't allow bottom posts.
Thanks will try it out.

Remove dns in /etc/resolv and add the sites manually in /etc/hosts? You can still access the sites by ip but dns for things like www.google.com won't work.
The sites added must be static ips or that won't work in which case a caching DNS and some restrictions can be done but more of a headache.

Subject: Restricting browsers to only listed websites
Is there a way to allow a machine on the network to only access a small list of websites?
I have a fedora 17 machine that is hooked to a tv that I only want to access a couple of sites for movies. This is accessible to everyone and is only to be used as stated.
I need the network up.
A Cisco router is between the machine and the net that I do not want to reset. (Unauthorized to do so).
Any help on this would be appreciated.
