drupal 7 in F14?
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I've been learning about Drupal 7 on a CentOS install and it is more
convenient to use it on my F14 box for learning purposes. The install
was just a yum command, but I'm accustomed to finding and running the
install.php file to configure it. When I start an instance of firefox
as root and browse to that file I don't get the expected install
screen sequence but rather some ascii gibberish. Also the file
location is in /usr/share rather than as I would have expected in a
folder off /var/www/html.
Is there a reference for D7 in Fedora? There's no man page. I have a
couple of D7 books, it's the Fedora-specific bits I'm having trouble
with.
Advice much appreciated.

Fedora 15 -- Samba configuration
by Michael Eager
I'm having trouble getting Samba to work on F15, x86_64, samba 3.5.8.
I'm using the same smb.conf file which previously worked without
problem on Fedora 10. I've trimmed it down to bare bones, with no luck.
From a Windows XP machine, I get "<server>\<share> is not accessible."
with no other information.
I've also tried to access the share from the Linux server and I get
an NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED error.
The user name is "eager" and I have run "smbpasswd -a eager" and
"smbpasswd -e eager".
Any suggestions? Here's the configuration info:

Preupgrade and first thoughts
by Mark Eggers
In short, there are some teething issues, but nothing that shouldn't be
able to be worked around.
First of all, the basics for my system.
CPU: Intel P4 at 2.60 GHz
Memory: 1.5 GB RDR ram
Disk: 120 GB IDE ext 3
Graphics: NVidia 7600 GS overclocked
Driver: NVidia 275.09 from NVidia (beta)
Display: Samsung SyncMaster 1680x1050
The good:
Preupgrade worked without having to depend on a wired connection.
Preupgrade correctly found enough space on /boot.
All custom settings were retained.
This is pretty amazing since this system has not had a fresh system
install since Fedora 9.
The expected:
I had to use Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get to command line mode to install the
NVidia driver.
The long:
With 3075 packages to upgrade, this process took a little over 6
hours.
The bad:
The timezone seems to have gotten borked. Both KDE and Gnome time
setting tools were unable to change this in a persistent way. I had
to use /usr/bin/system-config-date to make the persistent change.
It looks like the Cairo buggy gradient patch has been removed. This
results in poor performance for those people running NVidia cards with
the NVidia blob for some operations.
Performance issues with GTKPerf. While most operations are slightly
faster, the GtkTextView - Add text operation is three times slower.
The system appears to use more memory than Fedora 14. I suppose this
is due to Gnome 3. I will have to make some detailed notes at a later
point.
Several minor SELinux issues. Bugs concerning ones with Fedora-only
components have been filed.
mysql_auth is missing a symbol, preventing HTTPD from starting if
this module is configured. I have commented it out for now, and will
submit a bug with the exact information later.
KPackageKit and yum don't seem to be in sync. Checking for updates
with KPackageKit produces no updates, while checking via the yum
command line lists updates.
Also, updates are listed twice when running yum from the command line.
For example:
---> Package parted.i686 0:2.3-8.fc15 will be updated
---> Package parted.i686 0:2.3-9.fc15 will be an updated
The ugly:
Boot messages are less clear, slowing down the ability to catch
boot-time errors. I had to diagnose the Apache HTTPD problem by
running /usr/sbin/apachectl start|stop and watching the console for
errors.
Fonts are a mess (again). Even including 10-autohint.conf doesn't
help. I will have to redo my ~/.fonts.conf again to get fonts clear,
clean, and crisp.
Fonts in Emacs (actually since late Fedora 14) are a mess. In order
to reduce artifacts, I have to use 14 pt. Courier New. Of course,
this means I can edit documents from across the room.
Lots of .xsession-errors entries due to what looks like race
conditions in KDE. This could be due to the beta driver. However, the
beta driver seems to have smoother performance than the released
270.41.19 driver.
Gnome 3 is pretty much unusable with custom fonts. I will spend time
resetting the fonts to default, then seeing if I can clean up the
theme. This is pretty low on a list of things to do, since Gnome 3
does not seem to fit my workflow (lots of different applications,
workspaces dedicated to tasks).
. . . . just my two cents.

Fedora 15 boot delays -
by Bob Goodwin
I was seeing some very slow boot times, probably self inflicted,
until I re-installed F-15 after which it worked quite nicely.
Until I disabled network manager and set up a non-dhcp network
with system-config-network.
Then I could connect to the internet by clicking on "Activate"
and the browser and e-mail functions worked but there was no
connection to the LAN. Ethtool reported there was no device. I
then did:
cp /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-p2p1
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 and rebooted and eth1
came back on and I had access to my NFS, etc.
However the boot routine now stops at "Start LSB: The cups
scheduler" and sm-client, 60 seconds at each one which makes for
a long boot time. Normally that's only done once a day so it's
mostly an annoyance but I would like to fix it so it works right.
That or I guess there's really no reason I can't live with
network manager. It's just that I don't need it, these computers
are all "desk top" computers firmly rooted to my desks and
tethered to the 60 cycle main.
I guess what I'm looking for is advice, should I just turn up
network manager again or keep hoping that a solution comes along?
Bob.

F15: fail2ban not in iptables status
by Marco Guazzone
Hi,
I have fail2ban up and running on my Fedora 15.
root 1026 0.0 0.3 189936 6724 ? S 13:52 0:00
/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/fail2ban-server -b -s
/var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock -x
I use it for banning IPs that try to connect to my host via SSH.
Here's below is a snip of jail.local:
--- [jail.local] ---
[ssh-iptables]
enabled = true
filter = sshd
action = iptables[name=SSH, port=ssh, protocol=tcp]
sendmail-whois[name=SSH, dest=sguazt, sender=fail2ban@localhost]
logpath = /var/log/secure
maxretry = 3
--- [/jail.local] ---
However I can't see it in the iptables status (like I could until Fedora 14).
So I think it is not working properly.
Here's my iptables status:

Converting VMs from KVM to VirtualBox
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
Although the man page for qemu-img states i can convert between raw, qcow2
and vdi images, a raw KVM image I converted did not worked with VirtualBox.
Could anyone confirm if this was supposed to work?
I used this command:
# qemu-img convert -O vdi centos.img centos.vdi
(yes, the VM was running CentOS 5)
And I tried to use centos.vdi as an image file when defining a hard drive
for the VirtualBox VM.
Under Fedora 14, all updates installed, and VirtualBox 4.0.8 from Oracle
repos.

And how do I do that? virt-manager has no export / convert option, and "man qemu-img" doesn't list ovf as a supported format.

KVM x VirtualBox
by Fernando Lozano
Hi there,
I've been using KVM for quite some time but now I have to work with a
couple VirtualBox VMs. I don't want to have to setup a different server for
that.
Is it possible to have both KVM and VirtualBox installed and active on my
Fedora 15 box? If positive, can I run a KVM VM and a VirtualBox VM at the
same time, or will I have to run only one of then and shutdown the other?
Should I get VirtualBox rpms from rpmforge.org or should I use packages
from Oracle?
