Why on the Earth GNOME Shell hiding Shutdown & Restart options
by Juan R. de Silva
Could anybody explain it, why GNOME folks decided to hide the Shutdown
and especially Restart buttons/options from a user so well? Is it
especially dangerous to use them nowadays? Or GNOME folks assume people
do not shutdown/restart their computers anymore?
This "feature" could drive crazy any user new to GNOME 3.0. I tried it
from the LiveCD first and get caught like a mouse in a trap. Good for me
I had Internet connection and found on google, ALT button changes Suspend
to Shutdown. At least I had this option.
But again, since I was running it from the LiveCD I needed Restart
instead. You see, Fedora boot loader was picking up and locking DVD
drive after restarting system so fast, it was "mission impossible" to
open a tray and to remove the CD. Since I could not figure out how to
restart the system, I had to shut it down, then reached BIOS, disabled CD
boot and only then I was able to remove that damn CD from a tray.
"Revolution" indeed.

Protected WLAN
by Misha Shnurapet
Hi.
Which WLAN protection method would you recommend?
* Shared key
* WPA-Personal
* WPA2-Personal
My router also supports Radius with 802.1x and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise, but these require strange stuff like certificates that leave me clueless. :)

F15: Using gedit and evince under lxde
by Alexander Volovics
I have been having problems with nouveau/nvidia under gnome3
on my desktop. So not to waste anymore time I installed F15 LXDE.
I rather like it, reminds me of my blackbox/fluxbox days.
However some LXDE apps are a bit raw compared to their gnome
counterparts, i.e. leafpad/gedit, ePDF/evince.
So I installed gedit and evince. I use gedit regularly, not
as an editor (I use vim) but as a wordprocessor in place of the
unwieldy OO/LO Writer.
The problem with gedit/evince under LXDE is that they do not
retain configuration settings and I see the following message:
$ gedit
GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings
will not be saved or shared with other applications.
After installation in LXDE there is a folder ~/.config/gedit
with 3 files in it: accels, gedit-page-setup & gedit-print-settings.
I suspect that I can fix the above problem by editing either 'accels'
or 'gedit-page-setup'.
'accels' is rather complicated but 'gedit-page-setup' seems more
accessible:
[Page Setup]
PPDName=Letter
DisplayName=US Letter
Width=215.89999389648438
Height=279.39999389648438
MarginTop=6.3499999999999996
MarginBottom=14.224
MarginLeft=6.3499999999999996
MarginRight=6.3499999999999996
Orientation=portrait
It is not quite clear to me if these lines define the 'size' of gedit
(i.e. something like --geometry=80x40) or the 'position' of gedit on
the screen or both.
And I do not see anything to change the font and its size.
As the documentation on LXDE is rather sparse I don't know where
to get basic information before experimenting on my own.
Can anybody help or should I post to the Fedora LXDE list or a LXDE
forum?

Hi, maybe you can remove the .gconf/ dir of your home dir, if you do not care about other settings

I don't know if this would do the trick
$ rm -rf ~/.gnome*
like I used to do sometimes with the old migration to KDE 4.0.X series I used to do a
$ rm -rf ~/.kde
to get a pristine KDE after messing with the panels and getting some inconveniences :)
If you would hate to do that drastic cure, try the
Another option is to create a new user and ditch the old one :)

Reset gnome 3?
by linuxnutster@videotron.ca
Is there some way to reset gnome 3's setttings? I have been googling
around about tips and tweaks for gnome 3 and noticed I am missing a few
things, such as "places," "recent documents," and the plus/minus signs
at the bottom right to add/remove desktops, etc...
Unless, of course, I'm simply doing something wrong? Could the gnome
tweak tool have caused this? Is there a better FAQ I could consult?
In other words, I can't seem to get this:

F15 Firefox crashes after latest update
by John Wendel
Looks like the latest update has broken Firefox, I get a crash every few
minutes. Previously, I'd never seen a Firefox crash on this system.
Since there were so many updates, I don't have a clue which piece broke
things. I straced Firefox until it crashed, but the strace output didn't
show anything, it just stopped.
How can I report this without knowing who to blame? Clues appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Speakers don't Mute when headphones are plugged in (Speakers & Headphones at the same time) :S
by Manuel Escudero
Since I bought my computer and I installed Linux on it, I had this
problem...
Back in the day I never Found a REAL Solution and finally my solution (in
Fedora)
was installing "pavucontrol" to choose the Devices when I needed to Switch.
Via the Pulse Audio Volume Control I was able to Mute speakers or Headphones
at my will, even if I had both connected, this thing worked from F12 to F14
very well...
(The same problem is present in every distro I tried and sometimes it was
solved the
same way in other distros)
But Now, I'm in F15 And my magic workout doesn't work anymore... it doesn't
matter
wich device I choose as output, the PC simple don't mute one or another and
my headphones
and speakers sound at the same time, Can you tell me How to Fix it?
The Sound card is a HDA INTEL with the Realtek ALC662 rev1 Chip, as I said
before,
I'm using Fedora 15 KDE (64 Bit version) and I'm running ALSA v 1.0.23
Any Help will be really nice
Thanks!

No sound from Headphones in F15
by Manuel Escudero
Just a Few days ago I wrote a thread to this list talking about my
speakers-headphones
issue, (Both play at the same time) That I use to solve using "pavucontrol"
to select the
desired output device from F12 to F14 (Now in F15 that "solution" doesn't
work anymore)
and more strange, Just Now I tried to use the Pulse Audio Volume Control
again to
select the output and if I select the speakers, both headphones and speakers
sound
BUT if I select Headphones BOTH devices "shut up" O.o ¿Why? I believe it's a
pulseaduio
issue...
I'll quote my previous problem with all the extra info I have about it:
