Server hangs
by Srinivasan
Dear all,
We have installed Fedora Linux 8.0 on our server and we have a web based
application running on DB MySql. The server hangs very frequently(atleast
once a day). All operations come to stand still including the keyboard and
mouse etc.. We need to hard boot the system again to make the server up and
running.
Please help us to overcome this issue.

Firefox crashing when accessing an SSL-secured web site
by Felix Schwarz
Hi,
since two days I have the problem that I can not use Firefox
(3.6.4-1.fc13.x86_64) anymore as it will crash as soon as I visit any
SSL-secured web site [1]. I'm NOT using any non-free plugins like Adobe
Flash.
As you can imagine, this is pretty annoying. I even reinstalled firefox
and created a new system user to check if this was dependend on my
profile but it was not.
As no one else mentioned this problem on the list so far (did I overlook
something), I guess it's something related to my installation.
How I can diagnose the issue?
Can someone makes sense of the traceback which is attached to the bug
report in [1]?

F13 system-config-services crash
by Jurek Bajor
Hi,
I noticed in system-config-services graphical display two unneeded "services"
that were leftover from livecd installation, namely livesys and livesys-late.
They show up in system-config-services, but they should not; they could not be
stopped/disabled there as well.
Note: from now on I kept the system-config-services graphical display open.
I removed the "services" manually in a terminal
chkconfig --del livesys
chkconfig --del livesys-late
After that I removed their init scripts
rm /etc/init.d/livesys*
As a result, the package system-config-services-0.99.46-1.fc13 crashed.

how to play media files on NAS
by Mick M.
Hi;
I have set up a small NAS with multimedia files on it.
I can read/write/delete fine.
However if I want to play a file I run into problems.
Kaffeine says:
Cannot find input plugin for MRL "ftp://192.168.1.106/data/mick/COMBO%20MUSIC%20VIDEO/0000---MP4/Fish_Go_Deep_ft_Tracey_K_-__The_Cure___The_Cause__Dennis_Ferrer_Remix__HD.mp4".
Cannot find input plugin for MRL "smb://192.168.1.106/sh_mick/COMBO%20MUSIC%20VIDEO/0000---MP4/Fish_Go_Deep_ft_Tracey_K_-_The_Cure___The_Cause__Dennis_Ferrer_Remix__HD.mp4".
VLC will play the ftp://, but ...
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'smb://192.168.1.106/sh_mick/COMBO%20MUSIC%20VIDEO/0000---MP4/Fish_Go_Deep_ft_Tracey_K_-_The_Cure___The_Cause__Dennis_Ferrer_Remix__HD.mp4'.
This is the same for .mp3 files as well as .mp4.
Mplayer will play all media files using both ftp and smb.
I am used to kaffeine and VLC and would like to use them.
Any ideas?

Generating modprobe files
by Alex
Hi,
What is the procedure or process to regenerate the /etc/modprobe.d
files, particularly the ones that define the module for the ethernet
drivers?
I'd like to generate the aliases for all the modules that are
currently loaded on the system, so they are loaded automatically on
the next boot.
Thanks,
Alex

Spam in 'Unmatched' folder no longer being removed when marked junk ?!?
by Bill Case
Hi;
Just virgin installed Fedora 13 with Evolution 2.20.3 upgrade.
Bogofilter s on. Spam in 'Unmatched' folder no longer being removed
when marked junk. A copy then appears in Junk folder. Deleting the spam
in 'Unmatched' deletes it from the 'Junk' folder as well.
Is anybody else experiencing this? Should I file it as a bug?

nvidia driver issues
by Gerhard Magnus
As the nouveau driver for nvidia cards (installed by default with FC13)
does not adequately support dual monitors I would like to replace it
with a nvidia driver. I'm using this documentation:
http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-nvidia.html
Here's the procedure I've decided to follow, although I still have some
questions, mostly based on discrepancies between the two sets of
instructions:
1. determine card model and level of support
[98] ~ $ /sbin/lspci -nn | grep 'VGA\|NV'
06:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV44A
[GeForce 6200] [10de:0221] (rev a1)
I found the card name and PCI ID (221) listed at
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html:
GeForce 6200 0x0221
So apparently this card (GPU) is supported.
2. modify grub.conf to disable nouveau driver
Both instructions say to add this to the end of the entry for the active
kernel:
rdblacklist=nouveau
...but the rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia instructions differ in saying to
add instead:
rdblacklist=nouveau nomodeset
QUESTION: Google tells me that specifying "nomodeset" basically tells
the system to use an older set of software/drivers which does work but
may be slower or have some other issues that people would like to
eliminate. Is the "nomodeset" parameter necessary in this case?
The rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia instructions also say that SElinux
protection should be lowered:
setsebool -P allow_execstack on
QUESTION: Is this really necessary? Does it risk compromising the
security of my system?
3. Select and install proper kmod (Fedora Kernel Module) which matches
the driver. This kmod must match the specific driver for the PCI ID
determined earlier.
As far as I can tell from
www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-nvidia.html (and since my system
has been using PAE kernels) the proper kernel module to use is:
kmod-nvidia-PAE
...which I can install using yum (as I already have the rpmfusion
repository configuration files):
su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE'
...and then reboot.
MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: Suppose this doesn't work and the reboot hangs
(presumably with the X startup). Will I be able to use a previous kernel
(on the grub menu) or will yum have automatically associated
kmod-nvidia-PAE with all the retained kernels? Or is the back-out
procedure (from run level 3) to (1) yum remove kmod-nvidia-PAE (2) take
out the extra parameters on the kernel line in grub.conf, and (3)
reboot?
Thanks for the help!

Getting S/PDIF output working
by Alan Nicoll
PROBLEM: No sound coming out of my Denon Receiver that is hooked to my pc
via optical cable connected to the S/PDIF port. If I set the system up to
output to speakers connected to the green port I can get sound.
SYSTEM:
Athlon 64x2 processor
ASUS M4A78L-M motherboard
[root@NN nck]# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe8f4000 irq 16
1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfeae8000 irq 26
[root@NN nck]# uname -r
2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64
[root@NN nck]# uname -a
Linux NN.FRONT 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu May 6 18:09:49 UTC 2010
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[root@NN nck]# uname -m
x86_64
SOFTWARE:
Fedora 13_64, fully updated.
SETUP:
Hovering the mouse over the speaker icon in the top bar shows "Output 100%;
0.0db, RS780 Azalia Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI) so I am assuming that
is the default sound output.
I went into alsamixer and muted everything except the SPDIF bars in both
cards.
TEST:
I test the system by opening sound preferences, hardware tab, selecting the
RS780 Azalia controller and running the Test Speakers app. I do not get any
sound. I have my Denon set to Aux, 0db and Aux is set to Optical 1 and that
port is connected to my pc. I can see light coming from the end of the
cable when the pc is on.
HISTORY:
I have been working this problem since 1JUL10. I first installed
MythDora 12 and learned a lot about alsa, drivers, mixers and linux sound
then started over from scratch with Fedora 13. I quickly got to the same
point.
