PreUpgrade
by Marvin Kosmal
Hi
I am currently using FC12
I read the Howto.. And I think I am ready..
The program will not change any partitioning on the HD will it??
I am still new to Fedora but, love it..
Is there anything I should know? That is not in the Howto?
TIA

Where to find documentation for KPackageKit
by Thomas Taylor
Hi folks:
In KPackageKit there is a help button in the lower left corner but it's greyed
out and doesn't respond to mouse clicks. Where else can I obtain help with
this program? I've searched in Start > Help and on KDE site but haven't found
anything.
I want some documentation about using KPackageKit which is not very intuitive
IMO. Things like what the symbols mean or what programs are already installed
(not by rpm) such as OpenOffice.
A link to documentation would be ideal.
Thanks, Tom

So , I thought if I su - root and run kpackagekit --updates, it
will not complain about the kdecache-jd ownership.
So:
$ su - root
Password:

<unknown program name>(18090)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the

the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security

disc_number_tmp = int(lines[3].strip())
So I looked for dbus daemon:
# ps -ef | grep -i debus | grep -v grep

root 18008 1 0 20:27 ? 00:00:00 /bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-
Guess I will not be using kpackagekit for a while.
It's version number 0.6 tell me it is still in a nascent stage.

Bug in mailing lists; unfriendly to non-subscribers
by Felipe Contreras
Hi,
I don't see any component in bugzilla for mailing lists, so I'm posting here.
In order to do that I have to subscribe, which takes more than a few
bounces, and that's the problem.
Public mailing lists should receive mail from *anybody*; if the poster
is not subscribed, then the message should go through moderation. This
is the truly open way.
Orthogonal to this is that the mailing lists should not mingle with
"Reply-To"; they should leave the To and Cc fields intact, so that the
MUA can reply to the right addresses. See:
http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html
This way when a non-subscriber posts something, he doesn't have to add
the "Please CC me as I'm not in the mailing list"; it will happen
automatically.
Decent mailing lists, such as LKML, and all the lists at
vger.kernel.org[1], do this.
Moreover you have dozens of mailing lists, do you expect people to
subscribe to them when they want to send a one-time email?
I'm sending this because my last mail to
packaging(a)lists.fedoraproject.org ended with "Your message to
packaging awaits moderator approval", and no feedback afterwards; it
wasn't posted, it wasn't rejected, nothing. So I guess the moderator
just deleted it.
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/confirm/packaging/cb5b17e42464919...
I took a considerable amount of time writing that email, it's not nice
for non-subscriber mails to just be dropped like that. Please, make
Fedora mailing list friendly to outsiders.
Cheers.

Problems when creating Live-boot usb stick
by Abu Attar Musharih
Hi,
I made a live bootable Fedora-13 on Buffalo 8G usb stick using Linux command
> dd if=Fedora-13-i686-Live.iso of=/dev/sdb1
It was successful apart from no longer able to copy any file on it.
The live Fedora only occupied 700M while the media is 8G.
I got the following message when trying to copy a file on it, even if
with the root privilege.
> cp mag01.doc /media/Fedora-13-i686-Live/
cp: cannot create regular file `/media/Fedora-13-i686-Live/mag01.doc':
Read-only file system
I removed any existing partition using /sbin/fdisk and reformatted
with command line
/sbin/mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb
What I have now is a single partition with only 6.8 Gb free space.
The question, how can I recover the original volume amount, 8G. If
this is related to the file systems (ext3), which one should I choose
so the volume get back to the original.
Thanks for any kind of response.

k3b, wodim, or what?
by Tom Horsley
I sometimes backup some data files to dual layer DVD using
k3b. On fedora 13, I notice that k3b seems to try and use wodim
by default to do this. On previous versions it used growisofs.
After burning a few coasters and doing much google searching,
I finally noticed the option in the burn dialog for selecting
the app to use, told it to use growisofs, and it burned the
dual layer DVD with no problem using the same media wodim always
failed on after writing about 1 gig.
So, if I should report this as a bug, what should it be
a bug against? K3b or wodim? Is wodim supposed to be
able to write dual layer DVDs?

no sound on F11, F12 and now F13 but sound on Omega 12 live??? wtf??
by Dave Stevens
The subject line pretty much says it. It's quite frustrating to be unable to
get this working. I am, open to suggestions. The same system with the thingy
plugged into the same little hole(in the back of a Sound Blaster Ensoniq)
makes no sound in the Fedoras but good sound in Omega. Is there some config
file I can adduce as a hint? I have no idea where to look. pulseaudio shows in
top.

Install Fedora 13 Hangs
by Gary W Johnson
I am trying to upgrade to Fedora 13 from a Fedora 11 system. I made a DVD and when I do the upgrade it displays the message "Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok) and then it hangs. The upgrade stops with the message and makes no ferther progress. I did a online upgrade and when it rebooted with the upgrade the upgrade hung the same way.
