Printer problem
by Richard Shaw
I have been having printing problems on and off for a while and
usually fiddle with it and get things to work (temporarily
apparently). I try restarting CUPS, unplugging and replugging the USB
cable, etc.
System is F12 x86_64 connected to a HP Photosmart C5580
(Printer/scanner/copier). Scanning has always worked flawlessly. I
booted my XP virtual machine and could not find any errors in the
toolbox but the HP drivers for linux have said the ink is low ever
since I changed out the cartridges (w/ new HP cartridges.) It does not
say which one is apparently low.
I've also gotten messages that the backend failed, last time that
happened replugging the USB cable seemed to fix it. I don't think it's
a cable problem since the scanner always works. I know at one point
there was a problem with the printer being detected correctly on boot
up but that was fixed some time ago.
Here is some output from /var/log/messages:

CUPS printer choice
by Timothy Murphy
CUPS often offers me a number of choices for the same printer,
and I have no idea which to choose, or what difference
a different choice would make.
Currently I am trying to use an HP OfficeJet J5480,
and CUPS offers me the choices
--------------------------------
HP Officejet J4500 series (CB780A)
HP Officejet J4500 series (HP Officejet J4500 series USB #1)
HP Officejet J4500 series (HP Officejet J4500 series USB CN89C552GR052T
HPLIP)
--------------------------------
Does it make any difference which I choose?
(If it doesn't, why offer me the choice?
If it does, why not explain the difference?)

by Randolph Jones
I want to replace my linux box firewall-gateway with an embedded
firewall-router. So far I have found none with good user reviews.
ie dlink and linksys both panned
can anyone recommend a cheap good hardware firewall router?

Stopping Audio CD automatically playing on F12
by Philip Rhoades
People,
I am using:
kernel-2.6.32.10-90.fc12.x86_64
with PulseAudio uninstalled (ie using ALSA) and I want to prevent Audio
CDs from automatically playing when I put them into the drive. I have
turned off ALL automatic options for ALL media using:
thunar - Edit - Preferences - Volume Management - Configure
and restarted Gnome but the behaviour persists - what am I missing?
Thanks,
Phil.

Audio with CRON works - not AT?
by Philip Rhoades
People,
When I put:
40 21 * * * root /usr/bin/mplayer -ao alsa
/home/phil/audio/vincent_van_gogh.mp3
in /etc/crontab - it works but if use "at" for any time and enter:
/usr/bin/mplayer -ao alsa /home/phil/audio/vincent_van_gogh.mp3
- at the designated time I hear a click as though something happens but
no audio clip.
Anyone know why "at" doesn't behave?
Thanks,
Phil.
