Strange msgs from restore;
by George R Goffe
Howdy,
I'm trying to copy my boot partition (and others) to a new drive with dump/restore pipes.
(cd /rb.boot ; /sbin/dump -f - /dev/sda1 | /sbin/restore -rf -)
I get a bunch of messages I've never seen before; here's a sample:
/sbin/restore: ./grub/ffs_stage1_5: EA set security.selinux:system_u:object_r:boot_t:s0 failed: Operation not supported
I'm running with Selinux turned off now but it came out of the box (install DVD) with Selinux turned on.
Could someone help me with this problem please?
Regards,
George...

Does anybody use gnome-do?
by Paolo Galtieri
I was playing around with gnome-do today and I find it totally useless.
I tried is to look up totem. So I entered totem in the search pane. The
match it found was for a URL from my Firefox history:
http://www.ccieflyer.com/
Because the website contained the following text
**Welcome* to t*h*e M*arch
The bold are the characters it matched. This is not what I was looking
for so I hit the down arrow key to display the list of matches. It
listed 135 matches, the first 134 where URLs from my Firefox history and
the last match was the one I was looking for, the exact match for totem.
Am I doing something wrong or is this how gnome-do works? If this is
how it works it's useless I expect the exact match to be listed first.
What's also not clear to me is whether clicking on the select box for a
plugin is the same as installing the plugin. The documentation isn't
very helpful. I expected to see an install button or an enable button.
According to the Wiki it says if I want to send email to mom I type
mom <tab> email
Doing this results in gnome-do telling me no results for email
So does anybody have any pointers on how to set gnome-do up and actually
use it?

Is KDE dead ? Was Re: Stable Release Updates
by Genes MailLists
I'm curious how many current KDE users we have - what percent of our
install base? And what percent of the desktop install base ?
Since the 3.5 -> 4.0 KDE pushathon, everyone I know who was a KDE user
(myself included, and Linus too!) switched to gnome and none has yet
gone back.
At least a part of the fuss about updates seems to be driven by KDE
wanting to be faster paced than the rest - I'm curious what percent of
our install base this actually represents today?
For me there were only 2 things disruptive I presently recall - the
last was F11 kmail no longer working after recent update - and the
devastatingly bad 3.5 -> 4.0 premature release.
I actually like the current general pace - its stable but we get
decent flow (tho it has slowed somewhat over the 12-18 months or so it
seems) of upstream updates/bug fixes and largely when appropriate larger
version bumps. Tho things like firefox lag too much imho - but I no
longer care as I now use chrome which is way way better.
Sure there are little hiccups here and there but overall things are
non-disruptive and decently up to date - and that is the right balance.
Congrats fedora management, redhat and contributors - and thank you.

Looking for a monitor driver
by Margaret Doll
We are trying to attach a Dell E2210H monitor to a Dell X260 Optiplex
which is running 2.6.10-1.771_FC2.
I have found the drivers for Windows but not for Fedora. Where can I
access monitor drivers for Fedora?

Klipper now works in GNOME!
by Marcel Rieux
On the brighter side, an upgrade has arrived since I noticed that Klipper
only worked properly in GNOME after Parcellite was installed and functional.
The upgarde caused problems selecting text. I removed Parcellite and now
Klipper works perfectly in GNOME.
Glipper is still unavailable.

I removed all the above except libdhcpclient (yum returned "no match found"). Still no firefox. I tried after removing each one and collectively.

Ordinarily I don't do that. I stick to fedora and yum, unless that source doesn't work or what I want isn't available.. Usually multimedia stuff.

Which card for my laptop?
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
My laptop has a Broadcom BCM4306 chipset. Since Fedora does not support
it natively, it is a pain every time I want to upgrade Fedora. And even
after jumping through all the hoops to install the firmware, sometimes
it works and sometimes it does not. Consequently, I wind up being able
to use about every other version of Fedora. Sometime back on the list I
saw a suggestion to change the mini PCI card to a chipset that does work
natively with Fedora and Network Manager. I'm ready to make the swap.
Looking on eBay, I see these cards and/or these chipsets available at
the moment:
Broadcom BCM4318
Intel Eifi 5300
Realtek RTL8185L
Intel Pro 2915
Athernos AR5213A
Athernos AR5008
I seem to remember that Athernos is a good choice. Is that correct? Is
one better than the other? If not, are any of these good choices?
Anyone know of a source of mini PCI cards other than eBay? Newegg does
seem to carry them.
Are there differences in mini PCI cards? I did see there were half-hight
cards. I have an off brand laptop, an eMachines M6805. Would I expect a
card pulled from a Gateway or a Dell to work in my laptop?
Thanks!

Grub-Menu takes ~30s to appear :/
by Clemens Eisserer
Hi,
Since upgrading my old P4 based Laptop from Fedora-10 to Fedora-11 the
bootloader takes a very long time to start.
I later upgraded to Fedora 12 (because of improvements in the nouveau
driver) but that didn't help.
HDD is set to first boot device in BIOS.
It takes about ~30-60s for grub's menu to appear, everything else
works like expected.
I already re-installed grub successfully, but no change :/
Any idea what could be the problem?
Thank you in advance, Clemens

How to Update Firefox with Fedora 12 and use Firefox's "Check for Updates"?
by Michael Bullington
To whom it shall concern,
I am very angry that I am unable to update Firefox manually using Firefox
because the "Check for Updates" menu option from Firefox is dimmed out.
The information from Mozilla states I need to have sufficient access
authority to be able to "Check for Updates".
How can I do this with Fedora 12?
I feel I should have the ability to start Firefox and be able to "Check for
Updates" as I please and *NOT WHAT SOMEBODY AT RED HAT OR FEDORA WANTS ME TO
DO THINGS!*
