partition customization ....how do I ???

Dear *,
I've facing one problem ( doing partitioning practice on 10GB IDE
hard-disk )

I've done this on disk druid
licked on new ---> mount point */boot *filesystem type ext3 100MB (
fixed sized is selected ) and it becomes hda1
again licked on new ----> filesystem type Swap 500MB ( fixed sized is
selected ) and it becomes hda2 ...
now creating / ( root ) partition
again clicked on new ---> mount point */* filesystem type ext3 5000mb (
fixed sized is selected ) ... now something happens as soon as I press ok
the swap partition is sifted to hda3 (previously it was on hda2 ) and /
partition goes to hda2
if I go ahead with this and create other partition / goes to hda5
why like this ????
how do I exactly maintain the said order of the partition in exercise ??

f12: evolution 2.28.2: attach icon for some message it is not show
by Dario Lesca
Hi, someone have noticed regard this issue in evolution 2.28.2 on f12?
For some message, the attach icon is not show and seems that the message
is without attach.
In "schermata-1bn.png" is show the problem: the focus is on message
"indirizzi", which has a "indirizzi.pdf" attachment, but the attach icon
is not show left subject.
This happens only with some message (in "schermata-2bn.png" is OK) and
in all evolution version of f12 (with f10 this problem does not occur).
Someone have some suggest?
Is this a bug?
Many thanks.

nfs mounting
by Mike Chambers
I have nfs setup, and works great. But the way I have it mounted, is at
boot via /etc/rc.local file with a mount command listed. I was
wondering if there was another way to get it mounted, or a more
automated way via a script that does just that or something?
I already tried and don't want auto mounting, as there are times when
want to ftp or download file from internet and that directory isn't
accessible until you click on it via file browser or whatever.

Update broke network
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
On a machine I do not use very often, I just pulled in the updates
of the last two weeks, rebooted, and the network connection is gone.
And I need it, now. This is a big disaster. This is Fedora 13.
What can I do? Thanks.
Take care

rpm providing pdftopdf in fedora 12?
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I seem to recall that there was a pdftopdf in Fedora 11 (from what I
recall). Which package provides this in Fedora 12?
I tried yum provides */pdftopdf and yum provides */*/pdf and yum
provides */bin/pdf and yum provides *bin/pdf to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

secure log stopped working
by j.halifax .
Hi all,
Don't you know anybody please what could be a reason that records of /var/log/secure stopped coming? Couldn't it be due to hacking the box? :(
Thank you for any help.

fedora 12 KVM virtulization question
by mantra UNIX
Hi,
I have a laptop dual booting "Windows XP" and "Fedora 12".
I would like to boot "Windows XP" from inside "Fedora 12" using the KVM
virtulization feature.
I am using the following command and it works, but very very slow, takes
long time to even get the login screen, any ideas ...
# qemu /dev/sda

Risks of backing up live mounted filesystems using dump(8)
by Jeffrey Metcalf
Hi,
I'm hoping I can start a brief thread discussing the potential risks involved with backing up live mounted (RW) ext2/3/4 filesystems using dump(8). Here are the reasons I ask this:
1. My understanding is that it is safest to dump unmounted filesystems to ensure all buffers are flushed and all files on the device are consistent and up-to-date. However...
2. Performing filesystem dumps can be a time consuming process and therefore taking the extra time to boot to level 1 and mount / RO to access utilities just adds additional work. Booting to read-only media with utilities is just as time consuming.
3. If / is mounted RO, it is not possible to write records to /etc/dumpdates as would occur with /sbin/dump -u. Obviously one can mount / RW to dump other filesystems, but it still seems awkward and time consuming to have to drop to level 1 anyway, which may be necessary to unmount and dump /home say.
4. Obviously dropping the runlevel to 1 or booting to RO media such as Fedora Live also prevents anyone other than root from using the system.
Clearly dumping backups of live mounted RW filesystems will not guarantee that file data written between dump passes are completely consistent, but I am looking to better understand the risks. Clearly databases on filesystems being dumped should be closed and unmounted due to the extra software-level buffering that many databases perform, but if the mounted filesystems are generally idle, are there any gotchas one can expect when restoring such backups. Also, my filesystems are all ext4 on Fedora Core 12. Any additional protection that the journaling and journal checksum features can provide in this regard?
Cheers,
-J
