Setup of DNS caching name server for home server
by Steven W. Orr
I tried to figure this out but it's a bit complicated and I hope it's not too
long. Here's my setup:
Everything is Fedora 10.
I have a home server (saturn) off the cablemodem. I get my address from my
ISP's dhcp server.
I had made the following change to my box (saturn) so it would use OpenDNS.org
[root@saturn etc]# cat /etc/dhclient-eth0.conf
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220;
send host-name "saturn.syslang.net"; # temporary RHL ifup addition
All is good. Then we have another machine inside my network which is getting
its address from my own dhcpd. All is well there too. That machine also has
its resolv.conf set by my dhcpd.conf to use opendns.org.
What I want to do is to set up the DNS Caching Nameserver. The goal is:
* for saturn to use OpenDNS.org
* For client machines in my network to use saturn via the caching server
I saw instructions to do this
yum install caching-nameserver
It installed bind. BTW, if I say
rpm -q caching-nameserver
it says package caching-nameserver is not installed.
I started bind. Please note that I am not serving any names. I just want this
for DNS name caching. Nothing more.
Then the stuff on the web said to create a file called
/etc/named.caching-nameserver.conf
but that file didn't exist by default. As an experiment, I hand modified
saturn's copy of /etc/resolv.conf so it just says
nameserver 127.0.0.1
It looks like I'm still up and running. Should I, and how do I, really do the
following:
* Where do I modify bind to tell it to look in OpenDNS.org (i.e.,
208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220)?
* Is it correct to modify the dhclient-eth0.conf to look in 127.0.0.1
* If I get these parts correct, then can I assume that setting my dhcpd.conf
to say:
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.101;
Would that be correct for my client? 192.168.0.101) from the client box points
to saturn as the dhcp server and gateway.
Sorry this is long, but I want to get this correct.
Thanks

installing new graphics card
by Gerhard Magnus
I'd like to be able to back out of installing a new graphics card on a
system running FC11. Is there a file I can backup and then restore from
run level 3 if things don't work? I thought this file
was /etc/X11/xorg.conf but it doesn't seem to be there....
Thanks for any suggestions!

missing dependency with qt4-devel for assistant-qt4
by Rob
Hi,
I planned to write a program with Qt, using the designer-qt4.
Installing qt4-devel pulled in lots of other dependencies.
When I started the designer-qt4 and clicked on 'help' in the menu, this
opened assistant-qt4 completely empty: no contents and no index at all.
It took me a while to figure out that apparently the qt-doc had not been
installed. Installing "qt-doc.noarch" solved the problem.
Therefore I assume that this is a missing dependency of qt4-devel,
which comes with the assistant-qt4, but not automatically with the necessary
documentation to make the assistant work!

Why is the base architecture i586?
by William M. Quarles
For years the Fedora developers have said that changing the base
architecture for all of the packages from i386 to i586 would actually
make the code less efficient for i686 processors due to the large bumber
of bug workarounds in i586 code for many i586 processors. So does
anybody know why this change was done?
Thanks,
William

BIOS update
by Hiisi
Dear all!
I would like to update BIOS on my desktop. It has gigabyte motherboard
and manufacturer provides only exe-utility for BIOS update. I was
trying to follow this tip:
http://www.linuxinsight.com/how-to-flash-motherboard-bios-from-linux-no-d...
It is possible to boot into FreeDOS but it's impossible to run
BIOS.exe. The error is: 'This program can't be run in DOS'
I have VirtualBox installed on the computer. Is it possible to update
BIOS from window$XP on virtual machine as guest?
Thanks in advance!

new network card no visable
by Gregory Machin
Hi all
What happened to Kudzu ? lol
I have replaced a network card on a firewall running fc10, I can see
the network card in the lspci but it doesn't come up on network
startup and isn't listed in system-configure-network-tui.
The card if from the same manufacturer and has the same chip set as
the old card .. It's not the first time I have had this issue. How
does one rest the network card interface associations etc . In the old
days kudzu used to do this ... ??
Thanks

Ebooks -- How?
by Bill Case
Hi;
I came across some ebooks online I would like to read. Is there anyway
to do it in Fedora 11 on a desktop?
Checked Fedora repo etc. I couldn't see anything useful other than
ebook-tools. I wasn't sure whether that was what I wanted or not.

gstreamer plugins
by Chris Hogan
Help! I am trying these past few weeks to install the
gstreamer-plugins-bad into fc11, and end up getting a package conflict
with gstreamer-plugins-good and -ugly. Is there a work-around for
this situation? There are a few plugins for gstreamer in the -bad
package that I need.
