Hi..
Trying to run a simple ldap search/query against a supposedly public ldap
server. I've tried a number of copy/paste attempts that I've seen from
various sites with no luck...
If anyone has successfully pinged/queried a public ldap server from the
cmdline, can you post your cmd that you used so I can see what I'm missing..
the site www.emailman.com/ldap/public lists a number of public ldap servers.
i'm simply trying to figure out how to query/access the names from one of
the ldap servers.
as an example, i tried to use:
ldapsearch -x -h ldap.bu.edu -b "dc=bu,dc=edu" "(sn=tom*)"
(but this generates a ldap_bind: protocol error...
however, if i do:
ldapsearch -x -h stanford.edu -b "dc=stanford,dc=edu" "(sn=tom*)"
or
ldapsearch -x -h usc.edu -b "dc=usc,dc=edu" "(sn=tom*)"
then i get back a list of data...
also, the bu.edu for boston university, works on the website...
so, i'm sure i'm missing something simple, but i can't pin it down. any
help/pointers would be 'ppreciated!
my goal is to be able to understand how to query a public ldap server and to
be able to return different data elements.. (ie, name, given, first, or
email/phone/etc..)
Thanks!

floppy disk formatting: how to?
by Hiisi
Dear list!
I wanted to use floppy disk for bios updating on my ancient desktop
running F11. Hence, I added this line to the end of /etc/fstab:
/dev/floppy /media/floppy auto ro,user,noauto 0 0
Now I can mount floppy using 'mount /media/floppy'.
I was trying to format the disk using 'floppy'. It detects the drive:
floppy -p
floppy 0.16 Copyright 2001-2006, Double Precision, Inc.
floppy /dev/fd0: 3.5" HD
If I try 'floppy /dev/fd0' the output is:
floppy 0.16 Copyright 2001-2006, Double Precision, Inc.
floppy: device /dev/fd0 not found in /etc/floppy
I was unable to find that /etc/floppy file. There's no one with that
name. How can I format floppy?
Thanks in advance!

Re: skype 2.0
by Andre Robatino
Skype 2.0.0.72 is the version currently in the Skype yum repository.
Enable it using the instructions at
http://fedorasolved.org/multimedia-solutions/installing-skype
You can get a copy of the skype RPM for future use by setting
"keepcache=1" in /etc/yum.conf before installing it, or just make a
quick copy from /var/cache/yum/skype/packages before the RPM finishes
installing.

compiz *ERROR* failed to acquire vblank counter, -22
by Yordanis Tornes Medina
Hi fellows, I installed compiz fusion on Fedora 11 and get this error continuously in /var/log/messages
Sep 25 11:01:58 tux kernel: [drm:drm_wait_vblank] *ERROR* failed to acquire vblank counter, -22
I tried all options in ~/.drirc for vblank_mode option and same error appear in messages again. Then, I disabled Sync To VBlank option in CCSM and error disapear from messages.
What is missing to get compiz working with Sync To VBlank default option (checked) and what is the meaning of Sync To VBlank option for compiz. Now, I have Sync To VBlank option unchecked.

k3b Data DVD writing with GNOME?
by Michael Schwendt
Does plain Data DVD file writing+verifying with k3b and GNOME still work
on Fedora 11?
I had "Verify written data" checked:
[...]
Writing successfully completed.
It then ejected the disc and closed the tray again immediately.
The infamous and premature "No medium found" dialog popped up.
I didn't touch it, because it would close after a few seconds
when it would recognise the disc it just had reloaded.
In the background, a Nautilus opened for the recognised disc.
A disc icon appeared, too.
k3b, however, did not proceed to verifying any files. It waited here:
---
Verifying written Data
---
Verifying track 0
0%
After 5 minutes waiting without any disc reader activity,
I cancelled it.
Does this work flawlessly with KDE.
Is it a conflict with the default GNOME desktop?

Notebook hp dv2313cl Wireless issue.
by Fabio Jara
Hello to all, this is my first question to the list. Hope you guys can help
me.
I have a hp notebook, pavilion dv2313cl with broadcom wireless. Recently
installed Fedora 11. All the other devices work great, but the broadcom
doesn't.
Have search google and find some info about using ndiswrapper together with
the driver for windows vista 64. but can't install ndiswrapper,
Is there a way to install my Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN?
Thanks in advance and my sincerest regards.

Hatred of Fedora 11 turned to glee
by Dennis Mattingly
I've been using Fedora to play Quake 4, backup files to my external drive,
and take pictures of my bunny.
But recently all that was interrupted.
Firstly, my front Headphone jack stopped working.
So I had to attach headphones to back-of-computer to hear sound in Quake 4.
Then I want to delete files of my external drive.
Since there is an important option to "bypass Trash Can" for Nautilus, I go
to check Nautilus -> Edit -> Preferences.
<< CRASH >> (and a nice bug report appears)
I was angry, but very soon everything got much better.
: My girlfriend had turned-off the headphone jack via System -> Preferences
-> Advanced Volume Control -> Switches
: There is software update available TODAY that fixes my Preferences crash.
Not only have my problems instantly disappeared, but I've learned two new
things about Fedora:
: PulseAudio has GUI options for everything
: Fedora development team kicks arse
So keep up the good work.
It's all very much appreciated on the desktop-linux side.
