loop device encryption with Fedora 11 and losetup -e
by Patrick Mansfield
Hi all -
What valid encryptions can be used under Fedora 11 with losetup?
Do I need to manually load the corresponding kernel module? Loading
aes_i586 and/or aes_generic made no difference.
Are there now better alternatives than using "losetup -e"?
I keep getting EINVAL while trying to use "losetup -e".
I'm running with the latest updates, kernel is 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686.PAE
The only thing I can use is "-e 1" or "-E 1", losetup tells me that is
just an XOR encryption.
These fail:
# losetup -e 2 /dev/loop0 ./test.image
Password:
ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument
# losetup -e aes /dev/loop0 ./test.image
Password:
ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument
These both work (losetup -e and -E seem to be treated the same):
# losetup -e 1 /dev/loop0 ./test.image
Password:
# losetup /dev/loop0
/dev/loop0: [fd02]:3918266 (/home/test/data_images/test.image), encryption XOR (type 1)
# losetup -d /dev/loop0
# losetup -E 1 /dev/loop0 ./test.image
Password:
# losetup /dev/loop0
/dev/loop0: [fd02]:3918266 (/home/test/data_images/test.image), encryption XOR (type 1)

nautilus-cd-burner for fedora 11
by Yordanis Tornes Medina
Hi
There is any way to install nautilus-cd-burner over Fedora 11? Gnome 2.26 come with Brasero as default burn application but Brasero take about 45 min to burn a 4.7 GB data DVD, when on Fedora 10 I burn the same only in 15 min.
I know that Brasero is a more robust application for CD/DVD burning, but for simple task, nautilus-cd-burner is more faster.

akmod for PAE kernels ? Was: How do I change from a regular kernel to a PAE kernel ?

yum install kernel-PAE <reboot> ?
I did this and it installed the lastest kernel's PAE version. And its
running too.
# uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Sep 25
04:56:58 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
HOWEVER... when it was booting, it gave a couple errors about not being
able to find the nvidia driver and it appears not have installed it
either:
$ lsmod | grep nvidia
$ lsmod | grep nv
$ lsmod | grep vid
video 18744 0
uvcvideo 50572 0
videodev 29612 1 uvcvideo
v4l1_compat 12048 2 uvcvideo,videodev
output 2476 1 video
There is no kmod-nvidia for this kernel. I have been using akmod-nvidia
for my nvidia drivers. Does akmod-nvidia not work with PAE kernels or
do I have do set up something different ?
Thanks

fribidi error with abiword on F11
by Globe Trotter
Hi,
I have been having the following error when I use abiword on a Word .doc on F11. Specifically, I get the following:
abiword: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libabiword-2.6.so: undefined symbol: fribidi_get_type
Looking around the web, it appears that I am missing libfribidi0. But this is not available anywhere for F11. So is there another way out, or to get out of this message?
best wishes,
Trotter

latest F11 64-bit Firefox unstable for me
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
Firefox has always been a bit unstable for me. It used to crash once
a week or so. Usually this bug:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21583
I admit that I use a lot of windows and tabs.
In the last few days, firefox has started to crash once a day or so.
You can see this by the timestamps on my core files:
-rw-------. 1 hugh hugh 1669668864 2009-09-12 02:17 core.2981
-rw-------. 1 hugh hugh 1280552960 2009-09-20 14:23 core.2978
-rw-------. 1 hugh hugh 1408999424 2009-09-21 15:33 core.12617
-rw-------. 1 hugh hugh 1408507904 2009-09-22 17:54 core.5627
Nice and big, eh?
These recent crashes are signal 11's -- segfaults. This is new to me.
This firefox was installed September 16. I'm not sure why it started
crashing. Maybe a particular web page that I have open.
Anyone else notice a recent increase in firefox crashes?
Oh, while I'm asking, any idea why firefox spews this on the console?
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gnomebreakpad": libgnomebreakpad.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I get hundreds of them.
I almost never use Flash (I have flashblock).
PS: the gdb backtraces on the firefox cores doesn't seem informative:

That doesn't answer the question, though, does it? When I installed fedora I
also couldn't play CDs. In my case it was necessary to change the phonon
backend, after which I've had no problems. I've seen many other people
complain about having no sound or having lost sound, but in their case they
have removed pulseaudio expecting it to miraculously cure things. Sometimes
it has fallen back to alsa cleanly. Sometimes it hasn't and they still have
problems. If you want to solve a problem, not just whine about it, you have
to be prepared to do some investigation and give more information so that
people can help you.

anthy/ibus update broken?
by Stuart McGraw
I just did an update of some packages on my F11
system including updates to:
ibus-1.1.0.20090829-1
ibus-anthy-1.1.0.20090829-1
ibus-gtk-1.1.0.20090829-1
ibus-libs-1.1.0.20090829-1
anthy-9100h-8
(I don't know what the pre-update versions were.)
Now I find ibus/anthy no longer works. When I type
Alt+grave to enable the IME, nothing happens. Ibus
is running and its icon is on the Gnome panel. I
checked its preferences setting to confirm that
alt+grave is still the key sequence to enable it,
and that anthy is still the default (and only)
input method. No idea where to go from here.
Suggestions?
