dma_base is invalid

Hi all,
I have just installed a new PC and I have some problems with the last
FC6 kernel (2.6.19-1.2895.fc6).
At boot time the kernel prints the following error message:
JMB361 dma_base is invalid.
After a while it also complains about USB devices:
usb 3-2: device not accepting address 2, error -71
The main problem is that after some minutes from the boot the PC starts
to freeze and than go back to normal. It does this let's say once every
minute. The /var/log/messages reports the following message (repeated
every couple of seconds):
Jan 25 16:28:33 bart kernel: hde: status timeout: status=0x80 { Busy }
Jan 25 16:28:33 bart kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jan 25 16:28:33 bart kernel: hde: drive not ready for command
Also, when you try to insert an USB device (e.g., a drive) the PC
freezes for some seconds and the /var/log/message reports the following
message:
Jan 25 16:28:33 bart kernel: BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#1!
Jan 25 16:28:33 bart kernel:

There seems to be problems with the IDE cd-rom (SATA HD is working just
fine). I guess this problems are related to the "dma_base" message.
Kernel 2.6.18 seems to behave better (same error with USB devices, but
no "dma_base" error and no freezes).
The system is based on a Core 2 duo processor and a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

Disaster in FC6!
by William Murray
gnome-sudoku is broken!
I just solved a Sudoku - to discover that the solution was not
unique. Plugging it into my home-grown Sudoku solver I found 47 separate
solutions.
With this standard of game, how can I ever use gnome again?

Serial camera + RS232 > USB adapter
by Colin J Thomson
Hi,
I have acquired a RS232 to USB adapter, which is working well with FC6 (tested
with GPS) briefly.
My question is I have a very old Serial port digital camera that digiKam
refuses to work with, Its listed but I have never managed to get it to work. I
had to resort to using the M$ software in Wine.
I wonder if it would be possible to use the USB>Serial adapter somehow,
googleing around has yet to shed any information on this.
Cheers
Colin

How to set up mirrors in Smart Package Manager?
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi, people
Tired of the well known yum/yumex incredible slowness, I'm experimenting with
Smart Package Manager. I must say I'm impressed with some of its
capabilities, like the fast parallel download of files, the possibility to
revert a package to an older version from within the GUI, to use a directory
with a bunch of RPMs as a repo and to easily set up removable repos, among
others useful features. Not having to download and rebuild the package
catalogs every time you run the program or install a package saves much time
too.
However, I did not understand very well how to configure mirrors for channels.
My doubts are the following:
1. Is there a way to use a mirrorlist URL, like yum?
2. What is the difference between adding a mirror channel (Edit -> Channels ->
New -> Provide channel information -> Mirror Information) and adding a mirror
(Edit -> Mirrors -> New)?
3. How to use the first of the above mentioned options?
3.1. Should I add a mirror channel for each mirror of a repo or just one
channel for all of them?
3.2. How should I use the "File URL" field? Is this a local path to a text
file with the mirrors' informations? How should this file be
formated?
3.3. If a mirror channel for each mirror should be added, their name
should all be the same? And in this case, what should I fill up in
"File URL"?
4. About "Edit -> Mirrors -> New", do I have to fill up the channel URL
in "Origin URL" and the mirror URL in "Mirror URL" for each mirror of the
same repo, one by one? Isn't there a better way to add mirrors?
Thanks,
Marcelo

Anyone using SUSPEND on a Linux Laptop?
by clemens@dwf.com
I have read the cautions in SWSUSP and SUSPEND2, and wonder if
anyone is actually using either of these on a Laptop?
There seem to be so many caveats,
(a) stop devices before suspending, unload drivers
(b) USB wont be there when you come back
(c) and on and on.
That I have to wonder how useful either of these actually is.
If I were trying to put this on MY machine I would just do the experiments,
but this is for a friends machine that I am setting up, and I would rather NOT
install this stuff at all than give him something that would cause more grief
than
help.

diskless fc6
by Chris Rouch
Does anyone have diskless booting working with fc6 and could tell me
what they did to get it to work?
I have a diskless via epia M10K box, booting an fc4 image. Yesterday I
upgraded the server it boots from from fc4 to fc6, reran
system-config-netboot and successfully got it to boot as it had
before, i.e. an fc4 image loaded over nfs.
I then tried to create an fc6 boot image. I installed fc6 on a third
machine and copied the files as described in the howto (and the
system-config-netboot dialog). I changed the properties of the
diskless box to use the fc6 image. This begins to boot, but then gets
a kernel panic. The messages I see are like this:
Ramdisk: compressed image found at block 0
time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed
EXT2-fs: blocksize too small for device
grow-buffers: requested out-of-range block 10446744071562067960 for device ram0
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=ram0, iso_blknum=17 block=2147483618
No filesystem could mount root, tried: ext2 iso9660
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)
(the above was hand copied from a screenshot, so there may be typos)
The kernel I chose was the current one for fedora 6 -
kernel-2.6.18-1.2869.fc6.i686.
Am I using the correct kernel? If not, what should I use? And did I
miss something in the setup or have I found a bug?
Any help will be gratefully received.
Regards,
Chris

Cron message puzzle
by Anne Wilson
On two boxes I get messages sumarising completion, sent to root and forwarded
to me. A third box, running FC4 like one of the other two, must be running
the cron jobs, because the ssh accesses are reported by logwatch, yet I don't
get the reports from that box. /etc/aliases names me for receiving root's
mail. Have I forgotten somewhere else that it has to be enabled? I've a
feeling that there is somewhere else, but I can't think of it.

Image Magick and .ICO files
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi, people
I can convert .ICO files to .PNG files with convert or mogrify with no
problems. Even if there are multiple images in the .ICO files, multiple .PNG
files are generated, one for each image.
However, I cant do it the other way. When I try to convert .PNG to .ICO,
an .ICO file is generated, but it seems to be corrupted. Besides, how do I
create an ICO file from several PNG files (several sizes for the same icon)?
Thanks,
Marcelo

Re: 2.6.19 kernel won't boot due to "VolGroup00" not found
by Ed Hourigan
I was able to eventually fix this problem.
Here is what I did
1) Did not use the kernel config file from the previous kernel (.config).
Using make oldconfig may have been the problem
Instead, I did this:
make clean
make mrproper
make menuconfig
select only the options I need
save config
2) ran:
make
make modules_install
make install
( NOTE: be sure to use 'make install' as it seems to create the
proper initrd file )
I was not using 'make install' before. I think this may have been the
actual fix as
it seems to setup the initial ram disk properly.
