cron problem
by kwhiskerz kwhiskerz
On the weekend an update to cron came out with this new script: /etc/cron.daily/000-delay.cron
What it appears to do is to introduce a random length of delay before cron/anacron run.
What is the point of introducing randomness into a finely tuned system?
When one sets up crontab/anacrontab to go off at precisely a certain time, one expects it to run at the time specified, and not at some random time in the next
68 minutes!
What purpose does this serve?kwhiskerz{

Used portnumbers
by Erik Grootjans
Hoi,
I have installed vnc4.1 on a pc with windows.
If i build up a connection from a fedora6 machine to the win98 pc - with
the firewall on - it works
If i build up a connection from win98 to the fedora6 pc - with the fire
wall on - i get NO connection
When i build up a VNC connection from a FC6 to a FC6 pc - with the fire
wall on - i get no connection
When i build up a vnc connection with the firewall off on the server
(The screen i get) - it works
So i think i have to allow some ports in the Linux firewall
Which ports and what is the syntax to add them.
What are the default ports used by Rsync for building up a connection to
a internet rsync-server?
Thx

The Case of the Missing Characters
by kwhiskerz kwhiskerz
In the last 2-3 weeks, I have had the following happen on at least 2 occasions. Someone also mentioned it on fedoraforum.org, so this is not unique to my keyboard.I have noticed that when I am typing, the letters v,b,f,g,r,t,4,5 do not always type, making it very difficult to write emails and enter commands. The curious thing, as I just ascertained a moment ago, is that the missing characters all line up diagonally on the keyboard.I am using the pc105 character german keyboard setting with all dead keys, like it is supposed to be, and have the system set to use utf-8, which is the default. I have also enabled the xkbd compose key option, although I don't really need it, having an international keyboard with dead keys, on the useless key to the left of the right ctrl key.Could there be some problem with keysim mappings or something? I thought that, since the keys all line up, that there could be a problem with the keyboard, but as I had said, it has only happened twice in the last 3 weeks and someone else reported the problem on fedoraforum about 2 weeks ago.kwhiskerz{

growisofs also gives me a "Wrong medium type". All this was done with an

I tried googleing the problem but didn't find anything that would help
me with this problem.
Any ideas?

Fedora livecd: Cloning a HD install
by Lars Bjørndal
I've used Dirk Westfal's article which describes how to create a
Fedora 4 livecd, to create my own customized livecd. It worked fine up
to FC5 with kernel 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5. While trying to boot a FC6
livecd with the latest 2.6.19 kernel, it didn't boot.
Do anyone knows if the RPMs that are used in this article are updated,
and may be downloaded from anywhere?
Unfortunately the livecd-creator seems not to be able to do what I
want, or is it?

Hi Alexander,
This an age old bug/feature of Gnome. It occurs when there is a program
update or software install that adds or repopulates the Gnome menus. If
you don't run Gnome while getting updates or log out and in (of Gnome)
after getting updates or installing programs that add menu entries, your
menus should refresh without scrolling.

Printing header in Firefox -
by Bob Goodwin
I often print pages that I bind and save from firefox. It is supposed
to print the Title and URL as a header on each page however all I ever
get is the very bottom of the letters, not enough to even guess at the
words.
I have tried all the available settings but with no success. Print
Preview shows the header perfectly but unfortunately the printed page
does not.
This problem is peculiar to Firefox, Openoffice prints headers and
footers without a problem. I am running Firefox version 1.5.0.9 and FC6
updated this morning.
Any thoughts on what I might do to fix this?
Thanks.

Nautilus not working propelvy with images
by Andrea Mastellone
Hi everyone,
what is wrong that Nautilus can not handle correctly images, especially
in the png format ?
I have a FC6, regulary updated.
A little example will explain my situation: if you, in a Nautilus
window, go to "Backgrounds and emblems" from Edit Menu, in the section
"Patterns" you will see a list of png thumbnails of the patterns. My
Nautilus doet not show anything :( (if I launch it as root, it works
again, however !).
I have reinstalled gnome, nautilus, ImageMagick, and libpng without any
result :(
What is the library that handles this situations ? Perhaps it works only
as root...
Thanks you in advance,
Andrea

National-character conversion
by Albert A. Modderkolk
Is there a tool that converts, for example, the u-umlaut into the ü
symbol? Would be nice if it could convert any national-language
characters.
Thanks and regards, Albert
