FC5 video devices on boot
by Jim Duda
I recently upgraded to FC5. I'm finding that each time I boot, my video devices come up in a
random order, which is painful.
I have entries in /etc/modprobe.conf. I thought this was how devices are mapped to drivers.
alias char-major-81-* videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 bttv
alias char-major-81-2 cx8800
However, since upgrading to FC5, this doesn't appear to work anymore.
Is this a modules.conf thing or a udev thing?
How can I make my video devices order boot up the same each time?
Thanks,
Jim

SUG: Automatic RPM database verification and repair
by Tony Nelson
I have written a script to automatically verify and repair the RPM database
each day, called rpm_verify_db, at
<http://georgeanelson.com/rpm-verifydb.htm>.
The RPM database is vital to the maintenace of Fedora or any Redhat-branch
Linux. Yum uses it for updates. Nothing ever checks it for corruption,
until RPM finally complains. I personally could not upgrade to FC6 because
of silent corruption, so I wrote this package.
RPM's developer, Jeff Johnson, believes that RPM database corruption is so
extremely rare that it is not worth checking for, and he also notes that
the check that I am using is inadequate. It is, however, the best /check/
available in RPM. It can fail to detect problems that RPM may report when
doing transactions that update the RPM database. See the thread at
Redhat's rpm-list, "SUG: Automatic RPM database verification and repair".
RPM may be able to rebuild the database if corruption is found (by RPM, or
by my package, or by running "rpm --verifydb" by hand). To rebuild the RPM
database, run "rpm --rebuilddb" as root (which is what my package does).
However, --rebuilddb simply rebuilds the database; it does not say whether
there were errors in the old database, so it is not itself a /check/ of the
database.

Fonts on FC6
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I'm converting from SuSE due to the recent brain-dead decision to engage with
M$. One issue is that I had hundreds and hundreds of fonts in SuSE 10.0. How
can I get loads of fonts in FC6 ?
Thanks in advance

Overcoming the 2GB limit in writing a dvd iso to disk
by Jeffrey D. Yuille
Hello,
Does anyone know how to overcome the 2gb limit in writing a dvd iso
image to a dvd-r disk. I am currently using Fedora Core 6 and I just
bought a dvd burner. What I am finding out is that there is nothing
wrong with the k3b software I am using, but that there is a file size
limit of 2gb in trying to burn the software. How do I overcome this? I
have never run into a problem like this before in buring iso images and
I would certainly appreciate any help available.

Bad DVD or bad ISO?
by Redefined Horizons
I had some problems with my first attempt to install Fedora 6.
Thankfully I was able to exit the installation process and still boot
to Debian.
I'd like to try again with Fedora, but now that I've been part way
trough the install I've got a couple of questions.
The installer reported a bad DVD. Does this mean that there is a
problem with the physical disc, or that the ISO image itself is messed
up? I saved the ISO file on my other computer and I can burn another
DVD with it if I need to. Is there a way to find out if the ISO is a
fault. If it is I'll have to try downloading it again.
Also, when moving through the installation process it didn't seem that
Fedora recognized my Debian system when it came time to configure
Grub. I accepted the default configuration for Grub, because I
couldn't find a way to add the Debian as one of the bootloader
options.
However, it appears that Grub didn't overwrite my MBR entries for
Debian, becuase after I bailed on the Fedora install Grub loaded
Debian with no problems. Did I miss something during the install, or
should Fedora have notified me that it saw Debian when it was
configuring Grub?
I'm not at trying to complain in any way. I'm just want to learn what
I can about Fedora, and provide some positive feedback. :]
Scott Huey
P.S. - I had to use the text-only version of the installer, becuase I
only have 512 MB of RAM.

Warning light on Fedora System
by WGregory
Thanks to the list, I am now able to play an audio sound and recording
from my Fedora 5 box to warn out our night crew of a problem (play
[filename].wav/ogg). I also would like to connect a warning light or
strobe to the system to provide visual warning. In addition to lan, I
have serial and usb ports available on my system.
Does anyone know of such a product? And how to trigger it to alert from
Fedora? Needless to say, also need way to turn if off from the Fedora.

Evolution user settings directory
by Dan Track
Hi
I'm getting this annoying problem with my settings, so I'd like to
trash all my evolution settings. Now I naturally assumed the settings
are in ~/.evolution but it miraculously keeps returning. Could
somebody tell me where it keeps the settings in gnome for me to trash.
I'm running FC 6.
Thanks

Restricted Shell
by Jaigh Jaddo
I would like to give users access to ftp, sftp and scp without access
to the shell. It looks like rssh will only support openssh (sftp,
scp) but not ftp. I see a few references on google to rksh which
sounds promising but I cannot find source for it anywhere. There is
scponly but it has the same problems as rssh. Does anyone know of a
solution that will support ssh as well as ftp(vsftpd)?
Thanks,
JJ
