RPM/uum method to install software & administer customizations on lots of computers
by Paul Johnson
I have a lab of Fedora systems and a server that supplies RPM updates
& yum daily update works OK.
Now I have 2 administration problems.
1. How can I have RPMS on the server be automatically INSTALLED,
rather than updated? Suppose I learn of a new program that is not
presently installed, and I want it "pushed out" to the workstations. ?
2. On my systems, I have various files that are customized for our
site, such as /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow and some login
stuff such as /etc/pam.d/system-auth or gdm/PreSession and so forth.
If I want to customize those things, I currently use SSH to just copy
around to all machines. However, now there are some machines that
dual boot, and so I can't copy the files in there when the users are
not in Linux, and I'd like to have the yum system update them when the
PCs turn on. Aside from creating an RPM called "MySite" and putting
each and every individual config file into it, and then putting an
update of it on the server, I don't know what to do.
3. Sometimes the files I want to update or customize confict with an
existing package. I've not tried it, but I'm afraid that if I try to
run my MySite rpm update, then there will be a conflict with whatever
package currently owns /etc/hosts.deny or /etc/pam.d/system-auth. See
what I mean? How to replace via yum (which rejects conflicts and
stops). Or for another example, consider a package that supplies a
bad file, such as the bad Acrobat pdf reader line that does not work
under FC6. The acroread script can be patched to work.
As I write this question, I realize that I could address it by simply
rebuilding RPMS for any packages in which I want to customize files.
However, when Fedora issues updates, my customizations may be lost
(depending on whether they are polite and leave *.rpmnew or *.rpmsave
files.

FC6 and Marvell Yukon network card
by Don Raikes
Hello,
I just installed FC6 on my gateway computer. The computer has a Marvell Yukon 88E8050 network chipset, and now I have no network support.
I found a copy of the sk98lin driver for fc6 in rpm format, but it was for the upgraded kernel 2.6.18-1.2849fc6, but my installed kernel is 2.6.18-1.2798fc6.
I downloaded the manufacturer's installation package, but when I try to compile it I keep getting errors saying that there are problems with the kernel headers.
I downloaded and installedthe kernel sources as discussed at:
http://www.g-loaded.eu/2005/12/14/the-complete-fedora-kernel-headers/
When I ran the install again, I still get compilation failures (see below)

newbie question - mkinitrd
by Don Raikes
Hi,
I just tried to create a new initrd by using mkinitrd to include the sky2 module so I have networking support when I bootup.
The command I used was:
$ mkinitrd -v -f /boot/initrd-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen.img 2.6.18-1.2798 --with=sky2
Now when I reboot the system, it goes into an infinite loop of rebooting.

Fcron virtual Memory problem
by Thomas Papke
i have an problem with an limit of virtual memory. I have an java
program that runs normal started as user quiet good - it need about 1
minute to query a lot of data from the database and need about 500meg of
virtual memory. The problem is: If i configure that program as daily job
in fcrontab of that user - the execution of the programm need more than
6times longer and "top" said that the program only take 170meg of
virtual memory. In my /etc/security/limits.conf is nothing defined and
the programm is started without nice or something like that???
Where could be the problem that the program is directly invoked faster
than invoked by fcron?

Neil,
Good point. I am going to try a newer _better_ NIC.

Could still be a duplex problem, I've seen weird problems occur when the duplex doesn't match.

Just to be sure, have you checked both cable and port on the switch?

FC6: how to disable puplet
by David Turvene
Greetings -
I just upgraded to FC6 (from FC4). It's really nice!
But, because I work on custom packages - kernels, python, etc. -
I'm very careful with yum updates, always doing them infrequently
and by hand. To this end, I disabled starting yum-updatesd, which
causes puplet to hang (actually a slow poll waiting for
yum-updatesd to start).
I want to disable puplet also but I cannot figure out how to do
this under both GNOME and XFCE. I removed all copies of
``puplet.desktop`` from my system and looked in all the startup
scripts for references but still it is (seemingly) magically started
by (I guess) the window manager.
Currently, I using the distributed Xorg, GDM releases with XFCE4.
It is not started until I log in and my selected window manager is
started, but I can't figure out how puplet is invoked.
This is not a big deal, but it sure is bugging me to
see "/usr/bin/python -tt /usr/bin/puplet" hanging out
in the process list doing nothing, before I kill it.

FC6: why is microphone always disabled after reboot
by Pavel Lisy
It is very annoying. After upgrade from FC5 this behaviour is changed.
After every reboot on every machines I have I must re enable microphone.
I mean:
1. start gnome-volume-control
2. change device -> to (OSS device) - after latest update possibility
change it in ALSA device disappeared.
3. enable recording on Microphone (is every time on Line-in)
4. change device -> to (ALSA device)
Skype is newest version 1.3.0.53_API, device set to ALSA
Is it problem of gnome/ALSA or skype.
How can I make recording from microphone default?
