You may have to log out and log back in for that to take effect. (I'm not

Did you name your symbolic link .fonts or fonts? If it's called .fonts I doubt
it will work.
However I'm not so sure that the real issue isn't in the
available fonmts
themselves. I'm assuming that the files I copied from /usr/share/fonts and
from ~/.fonts on the old SuSE drive actually contain the fonts I'm looking
for. Maybe those directories only contained default fonts that I already
have.
Easy enough to find out. Look at the files with the Nautilus file browser and
you'll see what's what.
