Fedora Video Card Problem
by Matt Cook
Ok so I recently installed FC6 and it seems that My ATI card isn't
compatible. When I boot after the install, it wants to black out the
screen and act like the monitor isn't receiving a signal. Now I did take
it out and use the stock card on the Mobo (Intel Grpahics Media
Accelerator) and it worked fine. The thing is, it's a pretty pricey
card, and i dual boot with winxp, which can use the card. Is there a
driver that i can dowload, or some configuration i can change so that i
don't have to take out the card every time i want to use Fedora?

OT: good email to sms provider
by Will Yonker
The day has finally arrived where I need to know ASAP when a program
misbehaves. Now I am looking for a quick and not so expensive SMS service
provider.
Can anyone give me the name of a good provider? I've found a few but most
are in Europe and don't accept US credit cards. One I found is cheap and
easy to setup. The problem with them is it took an hour to get my test
message...
As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

On my linux server at work, I use the following:
In /etc/profile.d I have a file called proxy.sh
The contents of proxy.sh look like this:
#proxy.sh
export http_proxy=http://username:password@myprosyserver:port/
export ftp_proxy=http://username:password@myprosyserver:port/
export no_proxy=http://username:password@myprosyserver:port/
export HTTP_PROXY=http://username:password@myprosyserver:port/
export FTP_PROXY=http://username:password@myprosyserver:port/
chmod 755 proxy.sh to set it executable.
I use yum with this and it works great. You might have to fiddle with
the settings if you don't use username/password authentication on your
proxy server. Also, you should check in /etc/bashrc for this for loop:
for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh; do
if [ -r "$i" ]; then
. $i
fi
done
If you don't have this, you will need to add it so that the proxy.sh is
called when bash starts up.
Hope this helps!

Kernel 2.6.18 cifs instability
by Greg Trounson
I'm having major stability problems with 2.6.18-x kernels. When trying to mount cifs
shares with any 2.6.18 kernel on FC5 or FC6 the system becomes unstable, usually crashing
with a kernel panic a few seconds after the mount. I've seen this on several machines,
including a dual athlon box (i386), and an athlon64 (x86_64). A typical log for what goes
on is attached below.
I've also been having stability problems with 2.6.18 on my Debian Sid box, though not
related to cifs mounts, so I'm wondering if this kernel release might have just escaped
the barn a bit early.
In every case I've had to revert to 2.6.17 and had no problems since.
Is anyone else seeing this?
thanks,
Greg

yum unable to download mirrorlist
by Don Raikes
After a fresh install of fc6, when I try to run yum for the first time, I get an error sayingit is unable to download mirrorlist from mirrors.fedoraproject.org.
Is there something I need to do to enable this process?

Probably this is not the answer to your question, but in fc5 I installed
new fonts succesfully by creating an rpm. (

pkg-config complains about missing qt-mt.pc
by Marko Anastasov
This is not a serious blocking issue, however I'd still like
to have it resolved:
$ pkg-config --list-all
...
Package qt-mt was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `qt-mt.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'qt-mt', required by 'avahi-qt3', not found
I searched and realized that qt-mt.pc definitely doesn't exist
on my computer, and AFAIK it shouldn't.

cpio: the folder is make not conform to umask setting
by Dario Lesca
Hi, the GNU cpio (http://www.gnu.org/software/cpio/) in some case (when
the folder's property is not contained into package) not set the
folder's access conforme to umask setting.
% find /tmp/some-folder -type f -depth |cpio -pvdmu /var/tmp
the some-folder and your subfolders copy into var/tmp have the access
set to "rwx------" (700), not in compliance with umask's setting (as an
example 0022).
The tar in these cases behaves itself correctly, creating the folders
(not contained in the package) compliance with umask's setting.
Is this a feature or a little bugs?
I have migrate some SCO unix to Linux and this "feature" is annoying.
I have watched into fc6's cpio-2.6-19.src.rpm and I have see witch some
patch has been added to the original version. But unfortunately I am not
a 'C' programmer and I not able to setup a specific patch witch set the
folder's access to umask's setting ...
What I can do?
Is possible add another patch for resolve this problem?
I must fill a bug into Bugzilla?
Pleas, give me some suggest ....
Many thanks to all, and sorry for my bad English

RE:SOLVED - FC6 and Network
by Ferguson, Michael
Clearly a NIC problem.
I changed out the NIC to something newer and now it found DHCP DNS everything.
Thanks to all for the feedback especially the pointer about a possible "duplex" problem.
'preciate it. FC6 is cool.
Take care and best wishes.

Neil,
Good point. I am going to try a newer _better_ NIC.

Could still be a duplex problem, I've seen weird problems occur when the duplex doesn't match.

FC5 upgrade gdm appears hosed
by Jim Duda
I recently upgraded one of my computers from FC4 to FC5. I've done two others, which went smoothly. Something odd
happened with this one.
The main login screen isn't working properly. It simply hangs with the progress cursor running
in the circular motion. If I CTL-ALT-F12 and kill xwindows, then login and use startx, the gnome desktop appears. A
few minutes later, gdm attempts to run again and my gnome session is lost.
I have them processes running ...
5016 ? S 0:07 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
31812 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
31824 tty7 Ss+ 0:00 /usr/bin/Xorg :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
31865 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
31866 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
2
I believe I should have gdm running and not gdm-binary ?
Any ideas on what might have gone wrong in the upgrade?
Thanks,
Jim
