fc5: problem building debug version of directfb.
by Pawel
Hallo
I tried to build debug version of directfb. I added --enable-debug --enable-trace options to "%build" section of directfb*.spec file:
%build
%configure \
--disable-dependency-tracking \
--enable-zlib \
--enable-video4linux2 \
--with-gfxdrivers=\
ati128,cle266,cyber5k,i810,i830,mach64,matrox,neomagic,nsc,nvidia,radeon,\
savage,tdfx,unichrome,sis315,r200 \
--enable-debug \
--enable-trace
after this change, command: rpmbuild -bb /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/directfb(proper-version-number).spec
finishes with following error:
RPM build errors:
File not found: /var/tmp/directfb-0.9.24-5-root-root/usr/lib/directfb-0.9.24
When I do not add these 2 params to configure, everything finishes ok.
What am I doing wrong? Is there any other/correct way to do debuginfo version of rpm?
Below there is a tail of build process:

strange performance degrade on 3Ware
by Yakov Hrebtov
Hello!
I'm building server using 3Ware 9550SX-4LP SATA RAID controller.
OS is FC5.
I have noticed strange performance degrade, when writing to the partition of
raid device compared to writing to device itself.
Let me explain.
There is only one partition created (/dev/sda1) on my raid device (/dev/sda).
I decided to measure write speed to this partition, using dd command.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 bs=1M seek=100 count=4096
Writing 4G of zeros to /dev/sda1 takes about 64 seconds, so write speed is
about 67Mb/sec.
Then I ran this test on raid device itself (/dev/sda):
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M seek=100 count=4096
In this case, dd finishes in 34 seconds, write speed is about 124 M/sec!
(I repeated tests several times in both cases)
What causes so huge difference?
If I do similar write test on regular hard drive attached to this system
(/dev/sdc), then I have not measured any performance difference in writing to
/dev/sdc compared with writing to /dev/sdc1.
Kernel version is 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5
I'm ready to provide other info, that you need to help me to solve this.
Thank you!

XDMCP Client which runs under the desktop?
by Styma, Robert E (Robert)
I have been looking around without much luck for
an XDMCP client which can run as a window under another
X server.
As an example of what I am looking for, consider the Windows
program Exceed, by Hummingbird. I can bring up an Exceed
X server sesson and tell it to act as an XDMCP client. I can
then point it at a Fedora (or other Unix) server with XDMCP
turned on and can get a window with the desktop from the
Fedora server. I can have serveral of these windows available
at one time.
I suppose you could say I am running an X server using a window
as the display screen.
Has anyone seen software which supports this functionality on Fedora?
An RPM is of course preferable, but compile and install is OK too.

youtube works!!! Papadizi!!!!
by Ric Moore
The Universe now spins in greased grooves. After all of that dinking
with the new nvidia and the cubes and everything, I lost sight of what
truly significant in my life... Papadizi.
Ah... the true single-mindedness of a man, with Honor. His one raw
guiding principle, acquiring an American "Woo-man", is brought to focus
in his vignettes, along with goat cheese and a fire side chat. Life
becomes reduced to the simplist terms, with no ambiguity nor falsehood
to his lifestyle. The trading of a woman for a goat. Simple, yet how
elegant in old world charm.

Memory staying in cached status -- Possible Memory Leak
by Kaplan, Andrew H.
Hi there --
I am running Fedora Core 5 that was hardened by Bastille Linux on a system with
1.5 GB of RAM. The system functions as an e-mail server running Sendmail along
with MailScanner, SpamAssassin, and ClamAV.
I have noticed over time, via the free -m command, that the amount of cached RAM
is going up. This results in the amount of free memory going down to where there
is almost nothing left. The end result has been the system to periodically
hanging, which forces me to reboot the server.
What can I do to correct this problem? Thanks.

FC6 on MacBook anyone?
by Pankaj Jain
Has anyone had a chance to try out FC6 on a MacBook?
I only have an external USB HD that I can try it out on but that
hasn't gone very well. Constantly swapping drives on a MacBook is
quite a bit more of a pain than doing it on a ThinkPad so I'd love to
hear other people's thoughts on FC6 on a MacBook.
Cheers
