FC4 RAID5 failed
by 毛睿
I got a strange problem with FC4 software RAID5.
I have 2 RAID5s in my FC4 box. One contain 6 partitions /dev/hd[cdefgh]1, another contain 8 partitions /dev/hd[ab]3 + /dev/hd[cdefgh]2. They all worked fine before.
After I replaced one failed disk, a strange problem is happened. I removed the failed disk, and added new one. Syncing was ok, and was finished after hours. /proc/mdstat was also normal. But after I reboot the linux box. The 2 RAID5s are all in downgrade mode again! The new disk was kicked out! I never met such problem before with RH9. I tried many times, the result were all same. I can manually stop/start RAIDs, SuperBlocks and /proc/mdstat are all in good condition. But whenever I reboot, the new disk will be kicked out again. I can guarantee the new disk is good. In /var/log/message, I didn't see any error message during shutdown. And during the boot procedure, the RAID start procedure even didn't check the failed disk.
Does anybody ever meet the same problem?

reading a 32-fat HD with fedora
by umberto rossi
I have installed Fedora today on my pc and everything works allright,
but I still have two problems to solve:
- my pc has 2 HD. On one I installed fedora, which meant eliminating the
old Win98 partitions. the other HD wasn't formatted during the
installation. I thought I could read the files on it, but now I am
unable to open it--it does not appear in any place in the fedora
environment
- I cannot see my external USB 40GB hard drive. It was initialised for
Win98. Should I re-initialize it, and how?
Help welcome!

deny http access based on IP on FC3
by Yonas Abraham
hi,
I want to block a given IP from accessing my site, which is running
apache on a fully uptodated FC3 machine.
I taught I would just put the ip on /etc/hosts.deny and restart the
machine. But It is not working. I can block an access to sshd very
simply by adding the IP or sshd: IP and it works fine.
I wouldn't mind blocking every service to that IP in my machine but
preferably only httpd block.
thanks

Hi Mark,
Not a real expert here but I think iptables is where you need to look. Do
a:
man iptables
also you might look into

Problem with local network
by Chris Jones
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I have a networking problem which is puzzling me. I am clearly missing
something. Several of my servers apps are failing because they are
unable to resolve any of the local hostnames. I have checked
/etc/hosts, /ete/resolv.conf and both are as they should be, yet I am
unable to ping any of my LAN connected PC's by name. I can ping them
by their IP addressess, but not by name.
What else should I look for?
My hosts file is:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 bilbo.stow-jones.local localhost.localdomain localhost

192.168.0.2 gandalf.stow-jones.local gandalf
192.168.0.4 frodo.stow-jones.local frodo
When I ping to any of the PC's I get the following:-
[root@bilbo ~]# ping -c4 192.168.0.4

FC4 bus error message at boot time
by E GCP
Hi,
Thanks in advance for any help.
I have an HP zd7000 running Fedora Core 4 with kernel-smp-2.6.14-1.1656_FC4.
Every time it boots up it gives this error:
starting system message bus: unknown username "named" in message bus
configuration file
The booting process finshes fine and I haven't found other problems, but I
do not know what this error means and how to fix. I tried to google it, but
I haven't been able to find something similar to it.
This is a clean installation of FC4. I installed it just recently over a
newly formatted hard disk.
Thanks,
egcp

FC4 - Where is GNOME? The reason is related to a previous Xscreensaver version
by Hoffmann
Hello All:
I just realized the reason for the problem I related
in my previous posting (see bellow).
Since there exist a bug in the Xscreensaver version
4.21, which is reponsible for problems on KDE, I
decided to unistall it. Moreover, I installed the last
(good) version 4.23. The problem is that during the
uninstallation of the "buggy' Xscreensaver, the GNOME
session is also uninstalled, due to dependences.
In order to solve this problem, I would suggest to the
Fedora people, please, update the Xscreensaver 4.21 to
Xscreensaver 4.23. This way all will be fine.
All I can do, for while, is to uninstall the 4.21
version of Xscreensaver, following by the
reinstallation of the version 4.23. This way, however,
I will "lost" GNOME...

Migrating procmail recipes
by Anne Wilson
I have been using imap with mbox format mail. The new server is to us
maildir, so all my recipes have to be migrated, and I'm having problems
because I'm unsure of how maildir is handled in procmail. Take this,
for instance:
Old version -
:0:
* ^To:.*design@lydgate.org
{
:0 c
! xxxx(a)xxx.org.uk
:0
./Mail/Design
}
which worked as desired on the old, mbox, server.
New version -
MAILDIR=/home/anne/Maildir
:0:
* ^To:.*design@lydgate.org
{
:0 c
! xxxx(a)xxx.org.uk
:0
./Maildir/Design/
This gives error messages such as
<anne(a)localhost.lydgate.net> (expanded from <anne@localhost>): can't
create user output file. Command output: procmail: Couldn't create
"/var/mail/anne" /bin/sh: anne: No such file or directory procmail:

Ignoring the extraneous lockfile (now fixed) there seems to be two
problems. One refers to /var/spool/mail/anne. Is that a left-over
from mbox? and if so, what do I need to edit?
The second is the Design folder. On this workstation I see that as a
sub-folder of Packbell's Inbox. What is the syntax for moving mail to
that folder?
