display
by roland
To login to my application I use Putty. To display a picture I do a
systemcall, which opens a shell, and launch : 'display mypicture.jpg'.
I get the answer : display: unable to open X server
How can I get around this?

No Sound Card Found on Compaq EN P650
by James Pifer
I installed FC4 on a Compaq EN PIII 650. For some reason it didn't
detect the sound card, a Creative Labs SoundBlaster AudioPCI 128.
So I checked alsa's site for loading it manually and tried following the
instructions. The modules all load ok, but when I tried to load
alsamixer I get:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
If I do 'strace -eopen alsamixer' I get:
open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/usr/lib/libncurses.so.5", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/lib/libasound.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/lib/libm.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/lib/libdl.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/lib/libpthread.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/lib/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/etc/alsa/alsa.conf", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDWR) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or

open("/dev/aloadC0", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDWR) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
These directories do not exist, do I need to create them manually?
Also, 'lsmod' gives me in case it helps:

A Question about X and remote X servers
by Brian D. McGrew
I have a Linux box that I login locally, login with X-Win32 and login
from a Solaris machine.
If I run an application locally or from X-Win32 life is good but if I
run an application an try and display it on my Solaris machine the darn
thing blows up right away in XmCallRowColumnUnmapCallback???
I saw this a couple years ago and someone on the RedHat list send me a
quick fix but I can't find it now and a Google search for
XmCallRowColumnUnmapCallback yields zero results.
Help???

FC4 - Mounting an external HD. Am I almost there?
by Hoffmann
Hello:
I used the following command to mount an external HD
on my box:
# mount -t ntfs -o umask=007 /dev/sdf5
/media/HP_Personal_Media_Drive
and I got this permission:
dr-xr-x--- 1 root root 12288 Dec 9 16:56
HP_Personal_Media_Drive
How can I change this thing in order to have
permission (as a non-root user) for writing on that
external HD? My goal is to be able not only to read
the external HD (as I can right do now), but also move
files to it.
Thanks!
Hoffmann

New thread, really need assistance on this - high security hardware
by Rickey Moore
Fedoration greets,
I'm hoping to develop a tablet clientdevice, no keyboard, no mouse, just a touchscreen and wireless and a static operating system burned onto a DVD, live filesystem in ram. I'd like to not have to use a
harddrive at all. Just the DVD to boot from and ram and wireless combination for any file writing. Any
pointers in that direction would be appreciated.
I understand that the Japanese have developed such machines to a high art for their education system. I
don't want any input devices other than the touch screen for high security purposes... no output
hardware besides the LED screen , wireless, and an audio jack. The case would have to be high impact
rated, such as lexan material, and the box battery powered. Thumbprint login for security.
My idea is that with virtually no input other than the touchscreen, it'll be secure as hell. Finally, it has
to be cheap. Very cheap, if I'm to propose my package to state agencies. <cackles> Thanx, in advance, for
any considerations, Ric

Subject: usb problems in fc4
I used tried the same with an other usb keyboard (also lowspeed, same
uhci_hcd driver) instead of the barcode scanner (and therefore as the
third keyboard connected) and that is doing fine.
So what can be different between a barcode scanner emulation a
lowspeed keyboard and the real lowspeed keyboard from the point of
view of linux?
How can I find out?
Thanks ahead,

Urgent help about dump-restore is needed!
by Hongwei Li
Hi,
I have an urgent problem. For some reason some users's mail inbox got wiped
out. I need to restore them from the tape backup. I use dump to backup them
up. I have trouble to restore. What I did is:
# mt -f /dev/st0 rewind
# mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 14 -- to the beginning point of /var backup
# restore if /dev/st0
restore > ls
.:
... log/ spool/
...
restore > cd spool/mail
restore > ls
./spool/mail:
(all username, look normal)
restore > add user1name
restore > extract
You have not read any volumes yet.
Unless you know which volume your file(s) are on you should start
with the last volume and work towards the first.
Specify next volume # (none if no more volumes):
What should I enter? I tried 1, then I can extract one user's mail, however,
I could not extract any other users. I quit and redo the above from beginning
(mt ...), it starts asking me:

Specify next volume # (none if no more volumes): 1
Mount tape volume 1
Enter ``none'' if there are no more tapes
otherwise enter tape name (default: /dev/st0)
Then, it does not work no matter what I entered. What should I do? Please help!
Thanks a lot!
