yum first-time user question
by Tom Poe
It has been an interesting 24 hours. Managed to get what appears to be
a RH8 apt-get dist-upgrade to take. Now, also have a yum version for
rh8 installed, and a /etc/yum.conf file to look at. I want to use yum
to move rh8 up to rh9. Can you point me to the documentation to set yum
up to do that? Any pointers appreciated. My goal is to keep upgrading
until I get to FC4. Is this doable, without the ability to burn CDs?

Enigmail stopped working in Thunderbird FC3
by Chris Jones
I have been experiencing the following error when opening OpenPGP Key
Management sub-menu in Thunderbird.
Error - encryption command failed
/usr/bin/gpg -charset utf8 -batch -no-tty -status-fd 2 -with-fingerprint
-with-colons -list-keys
/usr/bin/gpg: error while loading shared libraries: cannot restore
segment prot after reloc:
Permission denied
Can anyone here tell me what has gone wrong - and more importantly, how
to fix this?

Verifying downloaded packages
by Michael Yep
Hello
I installed a rpm on my system that I got off the web.
How can I know if it is a trusted package ?

[winston@localhost ~]$
I forget where I even downloaded it from, but I didn't import anything
to my keyring.
What keys come with FC4? Which ones are trusted?
I understand the the package has the correct checksum, but can I trust
the signer ?

Screensaver Help
by C.Beamer
Hi,
I know that many messages have been posted to this list regarding
screensavers. I did install the two extra xscreensaver packages that
are needed to add more screensavers once I saw this advice on the
list. However, I couldnt find anything that specifically was like the
situation that I am having.
Once I installed these, they work fine in Gnome, but they don't work
in KDE and I'm sorry, but I'm a KDE user and the expanded list of
screensavers doesn't work in KDE.
I don't understand why Fedora had to go and change the screensavers
that were installed as part of FC3. It seems with every new release
of Fedora, there are more little quirks that have to be overcome to
get my system back the way it was before the new release. Don't get
me wrong. I love Fedora. However, when a new release is issued, I
tend to install fresh rather than doing an upgrade and it's just
frustrating when I can't immediately get things back the way I had
them before the new install.
Any direction here would be appreciated.
Regards,
Colleen

i386 firefox with x86_64
by Jack Howarth
Is there a recommended approach to regressing the browsers in
the FC4 x86_64 to the i386 version so the i386 plugins could be used.
I would like to do this in a clean manner so that the future browser
updates could be retrieved with yum or up2date. Thanks in advance.

Fedora Extras Firestarter RPM
by Mark Bidewell
This may be the wrong list for this question, but has anyone used the
firestarter RPM with Selinux? I seem to get a lot of errors relating to
selinux on network startup/shutdown when firestarter is installed. I am
using 2.6.12.1 kernel.

gam_server and nfs in FC4; how do I stop gam_server from polling /net/..
by Brian Anderson
FC4 has autofs setup so one can use the /net automount point to access
nfs shares. However, when every I access a remote directory using
nautilus through this it will never be released by autofs. In fact
,shutdown of autofs and even the machine is obstructed by these mount
points being in use.
Some investigation shows that /usr/lib/gam_server is holding open files
to .trash files on the remote directory. I tried emptying my trash and
I tried killing gam_server (it gets auto restarted). How do I stop this
behavior? Is this a bug in FC4 setup for autofs?

FC4 Sata Boot Problems
by Whemberton
My system is an AMD Athlon 64, Motherboard MSI Platinum, with 3 HD...
firts HD is IDE 80Gb, totally dedicated for FC instalation...
Second and third ones are SATA drives, 120Gb each, NTFS, dedicated for
Windows XP professional.
Actually systems boots first windows, directely through 2nd HD (windows SATA).
I've tried to confire lilo or grub (MBR on 1sr IDE HD) to dual boot
linux or windows... linux boot is running properly, but boot windows
by lilo/grub... no way... when I try to do it, system freezes... the
only way to change between systems is change HD boot priority on bios
(nothing practical... isn't??)...
Anyone has any idea what's going on??
Thanks....

FC4 messes up console on Averatec 3500 series laptop
by pking123@sympatico.ca
I decided recently to install FC4 on my laptop (Averatec 3500 series)
and noticed that while X-windows is running OK, the console is messed
up. The lines which should appear on the bottom are actually the top
2 lines, and are compressed.
In addiotion, I noticed that the module for recognising an NTFS
partition isn't loading by default. The partition is on a laptop hard
disk hooked up to a USB port, but using the mount command gives the
error message that the NTFS partition is not recognised.
However, my USB memory sticks are recognised, so there is hope.
I'm more worried about the monitor really. Any suggestions?
