I do believe you can get a working driver here:

You really should write Linksys asking for their help, and indicate that
future purchases will be influenced by driver support.

RE: Linksys 54g Support - PLEASE!
by Callahan, Michael
Apparently the WPC11 could work under Linux, I wonder if these instructions
would work for the 54G?
To get your WPC11 to work under Linux you must first go to
ftp://ftp.linux-wlan.org/pub/linux-wlan-ng/and get the most current version
of the linux-wlan-ng drivers.
Once you've downloaded, make sure you're in the console, not X (If you're in
x you may run into problems).
You also must be logged in as root, if you're not simple do:
su - then hit Enter and you will be prompted for your root password.
Make sure the card is not inserted!!!
Once you've downloaded the file you will need to go to the directory you
downloaded it to and do:
tar zxvf linux-wlan-ng*.tar.gz
This will un tar the compressed driver. After you do this go into the
director that was created by typing in:
cd linux-wlan-ng, then hit [tab] and tab completion should fill out the
rest.
Once you're in the directory, type in:
./Configure
This will start the configuration script. You will be prompted for:
"Build Prism2.x PCMCIA Card Services (_cs) driver? (y/n) [y]:" type y for
yes, and hit Enter
"Build Prism2 PLX9052 based PCI (_plx) adapter driver? (y/n) [n]:" type n
for no, and hit Enter
"Build Prism2.5 native PCI (_pci) driver? (y/n) [n]:" type n for no, and hit
Enter
"Build Prism2.5 USB (_usb) driver? (y/n) [n]:" type n for no, and hit Enter
"Linux source directory [/usr/src/Linux]:" by default this should be where
your kernel is located, if it's located in a different place please input
the path. Else hit Enter
"pcmcia-cs source dir [/usr/src/pcmcia-cs-3.1.XX]:" by default this should
be where your card services are located, if it's located in a different
place please input the path. Else hit Enter
"Build for Kernel PCMCIA? (y/n) [n]:" type n for no, and hit Enter
"PCMCIA script directory [/etc/pcmcia]:" by default this should be where
your PCMCIA scripts are located, if it's located in a different place please
input the path. Else hit Enter
"Alternate target install root directory on host []:" hit Enter
"Module install director [/lib/modules/2.*.**]:" this will
depending on where your module directory is, and the *.** depends on what
kernel you're running, if you've got another install directory please input
it. Else hit Enter
"Target Architecture? (i386, ppc, arm, or alpha) [i386]:" this prompt is for
the type of processor you use, i386 is Intel/AMD based systems (IBM Clones).
If you're running a IBM clone, just hit Enter, else input the type of
Architecture you're using and hit Enter
"Prefix for build host compiler? (rarely needed) []:" just hit Enter here
unless you're sure
"Compiling with a cross compiler? (y/n) [n]:" Type n and hit Enter unless
you're compiling with a cross compiler.
"Build for debugging (see doc/config.debug) (y/n) [n]:" Type n and hit Enter
Then you should get a message saying "Configuration Successful"
Once you're back at a prompt, type in:
make all and hit Enter, this will cause the drivers to compile.
Once the compiler is done, do make install or checkinstall (check install is
an optional download that makes allows you to remove packages vi the Package
Tool).
Once this is done, type:
cd /etc/pcmcia
then vi wlan-ng.opts
Once the file comes up in vi hit esc then i to start insertion
First you will need to change the option WLAN_ENABLE=n to WLAN_ENBLE=y (Note
some times this is listed twice)
Scroll down and look for "SELECT STATION MODE", make sure that IS_ADHOC= is
set to n, so it would be IS_ADHOC=n
Now configure "INFRASTRUCTURE STATION START"
set the desiredSSID="" (By default this is set to linux-WLAN) to what ever
the SSID is set to on your network.
If you're using WEP the options for WEP are listed above, however you will
need to enter your key manually. Read the instructions under "WEP" for more
information.
Once you've done this hit esc then : then x then Enter to save and exit. If
you want to exit with out saving hit esc then : then q! then Enter
Now that you have that done, restart your system, (When LILO comes up insert
the WPC11).
Once linux has loaded, you will need to log in as root again.
If you have an internal NIC, you will need to disable it. To do this type:
ifconfig eth0 down
Once that is done type:
ifconfig wlan0 up
Once that is done you can configure the wireless connection with a static IP
or you can use DHCP by doing:
dhcpcd wlan0
Once that is done you should able to communicate wirelessly.
*Please note that Linksys does not offer phone nor E-mail support of the
Linux operating system. This information is strictly informational only and

following these instructions. You must do this at your own risk.

Koffice 1.3.5 installs flawlessly
by Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:
Koffice 1.3.5 installed flawlessly. Configure, make and make install
were flawless. When I logged out and logged back into KDE, I discovered
that all of the Koffice applications were listed in their proper place
under Office, which amazed me. And everything else seems to work
perfectly, including the spellchecker in Kword. The error message
concerning the alleged absence of aspell at the end of configure turned
out to be wrong. Spellchecking works perfectly.
Naturally, I should have realized that I could install Koffice 1.3.5
instead of the very latest Koffice 1.4. Believe it or not, it just
didn't occur to me. But now all is well.
My thanks to everyone for their help.

won't recognize previously installed w/ lvm
by Jim Cornette
Takkng the installation that I had trouble getting to be recognized
during an upgrade when testing Fedora, it recognized the released FC4 disks.
The installer recognized that I had rawhide installed. Mail was from
3/16/2005 to give a timeframe.
Giving that the releases seem to be recognize by the fedora-release
package, maybe the fedora-release package is corrupted in some way. If
you download the fedora-release package and replacefiles replacepkg the
rpm. it might uncorrupt some files.
It does not appear to be related to LVM directly, if at all.

Linksys 54g Support - PLEASE!
by Albert Hawker
Isn't there a guru out there... someone out there... that can PLEASE
write a FC4 driver and config to support my poor little Linksys 54G card
that has been sitting on a shelf ever since I switched my laptop to
Linux? And yes, I tried NDISWrapper once... it wasn't pretty.

Remote sound configuration advice needed.
by Uno Engborg
I am trying to get remote sound working in FC4. It should work with both
KDE and Gnome applications. Some of them run from a remote server and
displays their GUI on local workstations others run directly on such
local workstations. This means that some kind of sound server would need
to run on the local workstations to help the X server with the sound
part of the applications.
But should it be esd artsd or something else. How does newer stuff like
gstreamer fit into this?
Most of the users use Gnome as their default desktop.
Any advice on how to set this up appreciated. There are so many
different ways to handle
sond in Linux that I don't know where to start.
Thanks

Well, look no further cause I've managed to bork my Ubuntu install 2 days
after installing it. What happened? Well, after installation, I went on to
upgrade it. First off, the upgrade was slow as hell. I don't know why, but
apt-get kept on stopping at something with "Getting headers" (I am quoting
from memory). At first I thought it had something to do with the MTU of the
ethernet interface, because in windows I've had in the past some problems
with the default value, 1500, and I had to change it to 1440. So here I did
the same thing, but nothing. Eventually, after a couple of retries, it did
download and installed the updates.
Then, the next day, the new update graphical app that appeared in Hoary told
me that there are some more updates, but they cannot be installed due to some
problems. Anyway, I went to the CLI and issued a sudo apt-get update && sudo
apt-get upgrade and it told me that it needed to install some packages that
depend on some other packages that were uninstallable. And it recommended me
to do an apt-get dist-upgrade instead (I didn't understand why). I did it and
it took a LOT of retries. Anyway, in the end, I've upgraded but then I
couldn't boot anymore. I kept on getting kernel panics. At this point I was
so pissed off, that I've put in the FC4 DVD and installed it. I admit I
didn't study the kernel panic problems that I had with Ubuntu after the
dist-upgrade and maybe they were easy to fix.
Now I am very pleased with FC4. Ubuntu seems to have far more packages (thanks
to Debian) available and in FC4 I've had to rebuild rpm's and even install
from source some things (because I am not yet skilled enough to create my own
rpm's), but other than that, it was a great experience so far.
