clamav and spamassassin
by Ashish
hi ankush,
I recently configured Mail server and Samba
server on FC3 for my
company. Both the servers are on the same machine.I have few questions.
a) I have installed clamav and when i run freshclam from the command
prompt it updates itself the cron is automatically set when I
installed it.Now the question is how I can know the date of the update
means in Windows you can see the virus definitions date on the
Antivirus ,I want to see the same date on the clamav so that I should
be able to know whether the clamav is getting updated or not and If it
is not getting updated i should run the freshclam once a weekly
manually.
ans. u can check the logs and all the information is
present there. Be careful i am talking about freshclam logs because it
is used to update virus defination files.
b) How do I know whether the clamav is working properly or not.
ans. through logs..........and through mail headers. the scan
result clean or infected is written there........
c) As mentioned before clamav is installed on a system running as Mail
and Samba server. If there is any windows/linux virus/worm on the
machine will the Clamav will clean itself or i have to run the clamav
for deletion of those infected files.Does clamav runs automatically
once a week for scanning of the system if not I would like to
configure clamav for that .Please tell me which clamav file to set for
cron and also how to make the clamav do like first cleaning of
infected files and if the cleaning of the infected files is not
possible then deleting it.This type of action can be set in
Antiviruses in Windows.
ans. if u have integrated clamav to run with sendmail........a
line has to written in sendmail, then it will automatically scan all
the mails for all types of worms which are coming on port 25 or
handled by sendmail.
d) I want to configure spam assassin As spam assassin is installed and
running I want to configure for few lists .Please tell me any
tutorials or the configuration for spam assassin.
ans. As far as i know i don't think that it can be done only for few
lists........correct me if i am wrong..........

Thanks,

Can't access mysql via Webmin or PhpMyAdmin.
by Mark Sargent
Hi All,
I can start mysql with the following cmd,
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start
although, I had to change
bindir=./bin
to
bindir=/usr/local/mysql/bin
to get it to work. I can access the DB with,
mysql -h localhost -u root -p
successfully, but, when trying to access via phpmyadmin or webmin it
doesn't work. I've set the config files to what I believe are correct.
phpmyadmin error below,
Error
*MySQL said: *Documentation
<http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Error-returns.html>
| #2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
I've got user as root and no password, as I haven't set 1 yet. Why am I
getting this.? Anyone seen this before.?
With webmin, I get this displayed,
|*MySQL is not running on your system - database list could not be
retrieved.
*Click this button to start the MySQL database server on your system
with the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start. This Webmin module cannot
administer the database until it is started.
even though the server is running, confirmed with the following,
root@localhost ~]# ps -uxwww | grep mysql
Warning: bad syntax, perhaps a bogus '-'? See
/usr/share/doc/procps-3.2.3/FAQ
root 4640 0.0 0.2 4180 1116 ? S 14:19 0:00 /bin/sh
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir=/var/lib/mysql
--pid-file=/var/lib/mysql/localhost.localdomain.pid
root 4771 0.0 0.0 1580 124 pts/2 R+ 14:36 0:00 grep mysql
Is anyone on here running webmin to manage mysql..? I'm curious how you
got it to run..? If I stop the server via cli and then click the start
mysql server button on the webmin page, it goes back to the same
message, but, the server is started. I changed the config module page to
reflect my installation. What have I missed, perhaps..? Cheers.
below is the config of webmin mysql module,
*Path to mysqlshow command* /usr/bin/mysqlshow
*Path to mysqladmin command* /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin
*Path to mysql command* /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql
*Path to mysqldump command* /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqldump
*Path to mysqlimport command* /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqlimport
*Command to start MySQL server* /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start
*Command to stop MySQL server* /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql stop
*Path to MySQL shared libraries directory*
*Path to MySQL databases directory* /var/lib/mysql

Yum -clean all........is that a bad thing?
by Neal Wilkinson
In an effort to keep things neat I noticed this option and ran it. Now
however when I go to get and update then I get the message (No Packages
marked for Update/Obsoletion). Up2date says there are 4 available. I
normally check for updates with it and then apply them with yum. So have
I screwed up what Yum knows about the system by doing a -clean all? If
so how do I repair it?

Does the new kernel support Intel 915 chipset? What do I need to
enable this? I'm using RedHat9 . I got the module for 915 from Intel's
website but don't know how to use it. insmod the module outputs
nothing.

SOLVED: Re: Failing kernel build when disabling CONFIG_4KSTACKS
by Jaap Hoetmer
I have installed a precompiled kernel from Linuxant
and that seems to work good. My card now works well.
I am still puzzled why the kernel failed to build.
Thanks for your comments.

Xine vs. Mplayer
by Charles Malespin
Hi all,
I am pretty new to FC3 and am have a question about video players. I
am currently using Xine and it works ok, but I cant play wvm videos
among other little problems I have with it. I saw that Mplayer does
play wvm videos and I wanna give it a try. Is one better than the
other, or is it just personal pref? I currently have Firefox using Xine
to open video links, how do I go in and make Mplayer my default video
viewer(please try and make it as easy as possible for a noob...) and is
there anything that I lose by switching to Mplayer? Do I need to get
rid of Xine from my computer, and if so how(again simple please, I am
having trouble locating files and which files are what still..)?
Thanks in advance!

root password keeps expiring
by Claude Jones
Having a bunch of issues brought on perhaps, by installing kde-redhat in level
5, but that's another story. One thing that is happenning that's baffling me
is that my root password keeps expiring. Apparently, that's what's happenning
as when I try to su - from a terminal, that's what the message says. Anywhere
else I have to put in root password, the box just returns an error about
'wrong password'. I know how to go to single user and reset it, but I just
did that three hours ago, and it has expired again! Can someone help? What
can I do to stop this? I did open Kuser after the last reset and root was set
to never expire, but two hours later, it has.
